Everybody loves lists, especially people who say they don't. The Jimquisition this week roots through history's garbage to find the ten worst types of DLC in videogame history.
At least until we think of ten more, then we can do another list. Lists are great!

And "locked" has overly accurate negative connotations that would make the customers uncomfortable and possibly prevent the transformation of players into payers. After all, those poor, poor shareholders all need golden yachts big enough to contain a swimming pool which they then have to pay to fill with caviar just for the simple everyday luxury of swimming in disgustingly overpriced fish egg paste. Actually snarkiness aside I honestly think buying the base game and then pirating all the DLC is morally justifiable for any Sims game. It's actually what I've done since the original Sims. Maybe if programmers got paid royalties I'd change my mind in the future.

Most programmers are salaried or paid hourly. Programmer's code is owned by the company, not by the programmer. That's how our contracts work. When you think developer, you are thinking too much of TV shows where some developer does everything and gets all the glory. The reality is less glamorous then that. Really you work on one bit, another guy works on another bit and together you build the thing but ultimatly it's the company's product not your own. The company is already paying you, why would they pay you a second time?
I will say though, some game devs really arn't paid enough.

Lootboxes weren't even a sperm in Activision's nutsack yet, the original Black Ops game had just come out, Modern Warfare 2 was still the current MW game, Skyrim was on the horizon, WoW was still on the Wrath of the Lich king expansion, Diablo 3 was confirmed and on it's way, I had just finished with high school... -inhales deeply- ah, them was the days.

he did play a major role in the main story, he was a fully fleshed out crew member. if you compare From Ashes to the 2 additional squad mates in ME:2 (Zaeed and the ninja chick) it's obvious what they did. in ME:2, the dlc squadmates had very little interactivity after you got them, no interactive dialogue, they would just tell you stories basically and eventually give you a buddy quest. with From Ashes, you had tons of interactive dialogue, a complete story involving half of your crew in multiple fully realized cut scenes. it was very obviously developed to be part of the main game but was probably mandated by EA to carve it out and sell as launch day DLC. between that and Citadel, ME:3 has the worst and best dlc of the series, respectively

The kind of DLC that annoys me the most is the nickle-and-dime DLC: instead of charging you $20 or $30 for a sizable amount of content it's all broken down into packs with nominally small prices that add up to a lot of damned money in the end.

Oh I think you've GOT to give a mention to Capcom's "pay to re-edit your character" in Monster Hunter World. See, the problem is that the Character Creator and the actual GAME use two different models so people would spend HOURS crafting a GORGEOUS character only to get to the actual game and suddenly they look hideous. Fans demanded a do-over option from Capcom and now they're providing it...at a price. So in essence Capcom is "apologizing" for a screw up on their part by...making you pay more money to fix your character.
Now I have heard all manner of defenses of this. Namely:
"MMOs do this all the time!" yeah and MMOs also make you pay for extra character slots too. But here's the thing, that's data on a server that would be strained if everyone was re-editing their character all the time (I guess). Aren't the Monster Hunter characters saved locally?
    The other is...
"LOL it doesn't matter you don't see your character's face anyway!" oh trust me, it matters to some people. Myself included. This is an absolute deal breaker for me.
Capcom has not yet named a price for this, but they have "given away" one free edit ticket for everyone. You still cannot see the in-game model in the character creator.
    ...
...why would you make a completely separate character model used exclusively in the character creator?! I know MHW isn't the only game to do this (FFXI did, I remember that), but it's still baffling and kind of egregious. Kind of false advertising isn't it? People look up the character creator on CZcams, see how AMAZING it looks, get the game and...yeeeah...

yeah, this is extremely stupid thing. I have yet to see a game, no matter online or offline, where your character looks the same in the editor and in the game. even with the same model the lighting makes your character look different. and you can't do anything with it other than keep deleting and remaking your character over and over until it looks how you want it to

Iirc it was basically the worst conceived charity drive of all time. You get to play with this guy on your team or as a quest npc, I forget which, for a small amount, and 50% was designated for the charity of what he died from.
You can almost see the gears from both sides turning...
"Hey wouldn't this be a great tribute to Mike, especially since our crunch time meant he missed his son's first day of school? Plus we can help ensure no one dies from this with the proceeds!"
      vs

Something worth noting about Launch Day DLC -- the first examples of such (at least that I encountered) were also FREE DLC. With Shale from Dragon Age: Origins, for example, BioWare came right out in advance and apologized, saying this was meant to be a part of the core game but they had to start shipping units so they left it out and then made it DLC, FREE TO EVERYONE WHO BOUGHT THE GAME.
Now, granted, this was probably just a cover for E.A. trying to declare war on the used games market again, but we still accepted the official explanation as, at least, coherent enough to possibly occur in real life and afford the developers the benefit of a doubt. But it's since morphed into a form of "Premium Content", and one that you barely see at all anymore thanks to the rise of the aforementioned pre-order bonuses.

Didn't watch yet, but Asura's Wrath's ending DLC has a weird history. The publisher thought that the game was going to be extremely successful and let the developers begin work on a sequel. • @devilmikey00
      @devilmikey00 Před 6 lety +25

Huh if true that actually makes that DLC far less objectionable. I mean maybe don't assume success and make sure you provide a complete story in the first go round but hey positive thinking etc.
Horizon ZD is a perfect example of how to do this right. The games story works totally on it's own. Full character arc and a plot with a beginning, middle and end with a satisfying epilogue. They do sequel bait but even if horizon 2 never happens you would never feel like you didn't get the whole story.

They come out with map expansions, which take considerable work on their part, for an affordable enough price. They come out with smaller content packs, like different trailers and paint jobs, for just a few dollars per themed pack, again reflective of how much effort the things take to produce. But because so many people are so jaded by abusive practices by other software publishers today, they start seeing red as soon as they see DLC.

thank you for talking about the Sims 4! as someone who is admittedly very deep in the Sims rabbit hole, it can be difficult to know what controversies get attention outside of the community. the Sims have added in a fair amount of stuff that was missing at launch (why was it missing at launch, though???) in free patches, which is pretty much the least they can do for not including...pretty much anything. there has been a boycott organised in the Sims community, with people instead donating the $10 for the stuff pack to animal charities, openly sharing links to torrents, and a group of modders who created "Our First Pet Pack" which is a modder-created stuff pack that contains more stuff than the EA version and some of the exact same stuff, just meshed by modders. for free.

Cheat DLC pretty much destroys the appeal of cheats in the first place as far as I'm concerned. Going to a friends house and saying "hey, check this out" before having a giggle over the fact everybody's head is 3 times larger than their body is funny when it's a quirky little secret you've found the code for...Having it on a store page for £2.99 basically nullifies that. When it's in the game by default then it exists solely for the heck of it, when it's got a price tag attached then it just feels like a cynical cash grab (because it is).
I don't remember the thing for Dragons Dogma with the pop-up ads, being somebody who played it at launch. It's definitely something that has been removed in later versions of the game (having played it again recently, I feel I would have noticed), but what's the context of this? Is it something that was really intrusive and my love for the game simply blanks out that bullshit?
Oh, and the Sims has always been bullshit, that's not a trend starting with Sims 4. DLC packs like 'pets' should have been in the base game by default from the Sims 2 onward, yet there's 4 Sims games and each one has a 'pets' DLC. Each new core Sims game feels like a regression of the previous instalment as you slowly wait for the exact same DLC's as the last game to be released again.

Red Dead Redemption's Undead Nightmare expansion is still to this day one of the most perfect pieces of game software I've ever had the pleasure of playing. For only $15 you got what was essentially an entire second story mode in a totally transformed version of the full world map, complete with new weapons, enemies, mounts, etc... It was a rare case where DLC really felt like the time since launch had been used effectively to create additional content. Versus now where stuff is chopped off day one...

    • @_CaptainCanada

In fact, it was such an extensive expansion that it later went on to be sold separately as a stand-alone $20 game, so that gamers who might not be interested in Red Dead Redemption itself could play the zombie version of the world for a single discounted price. Either way, it was worth every penny and more.

The Launch day DLC needs a minor subdivision. How about the unannounced launch day DLC? I attribute that to EA and their EAing of Mass Effect 3. I really felt burned by that when I preordered the game thinking I was getting the whole game. No announcement to the contrary. So imagine my shock and horror when I go to pick up the game at the store expecting to pick the whole paid-off game, and then get asked for 10 more dollars just to get the *full* single-player story because a major component of that actual story is cut out unless you pay the ten extra dollars for it. And this was all before the whole ending controversy about the game. That was the pits. They weren’t asking for a day one expansion that might have extra story content outside of the main story, but a cut out part OF the main story.
And they did it in such an underhanded way of not even telling their buyers about it until they go to pick up the game. I could imagine all the people who went to the store that day with absolutely no extra cash at the time, only to get told that *sorry* you have to go home with a purposely incomplete story. I wanted to punch someone at EA for that one.

I agree with most of that, but I have small disagreements with 2 items:
    1) Ending DLC - I didn't mind the Trespasser DLC in Dragon Age Inquisition as much since the way that went ended the game with your character. If that had been a part of the main game then everyone who finished it would've had to start new characters just to play all the new DLC or leave their characters just before the 'point of no return'. The main thing I minded was how much they charged.
    2) Launch Day / Day One DLC - Since games are often handed over the publisher ~1 month before release day, devs sometimes have the opportunity to spend that time working on the DLC. If they are able to get something done and ready for release along side the game that was going to be DLC anyway I don't mind. Unless its when they lock out substantial parts of the game, e.g. 'From Ashes' for Mass Effect 3.

I hate the idea of a "True Ending" DLC but I actually think that Asura's wrath should get somewhat of a pass on this. For starters the game didn't sell well when it was first released (Even though I think it was damn entertaining) so as a result the sequel game was scrapped. However because the studio still had some money and assets left, they decided to gather what they had from the canceled sequel and compress it down to a DLC sized expansion to the story. THE PROBLEM came from capcom's god awful marketing for the DLC. Calling it the "True Ending" like we hadn't gotten the real one, pissing people off to no end. It's also kind of a shame because, all stupid DLC and marketing aside, the DLC is actually really good. And frankly, I'd prefer getting what we got over nothing at all. It really is a shame though all things considered.

I remember the Asura's Wrath DLC fiasco. Maybe it might not have been so bad if they made it look like the DLC story was an additional or side-story, but the way the game ended pretty much set it up as a 'to be continued' ending, that everyone suddenly realised they had intentionally held back the end of the game from people.
Didn't help them much either, that included in the DLC were 2 stories that took place between earlier chapters, but they were both just cutscenes...

    • @shagohad3
      @shagohad3 Před 5 lety +2

That's not what the dlc is at all. There wasn't supposed to be a dlc, there was supposed to be a sequel. Asura's Wrath didn't sell well so Capcom killed the sequel and the dev team decided to make the dlc to give the cliffhanger closure.

    • @darkstar4341
      @darkstar4341 Před 5 lety +2

@@shagohad3 Yeah, no. They already had the DLC roadmap planned out within weeks of the games release, calling it the 'true conclusion' to the games story. Even in the months ahead of the games launch, they were already promising us a bunch of DLC, pretty much showcasing that they had set up the 'epilogue' as a separate purchase.
If it didn't sell so well, it's funny how they would have all this content ready for release within 2 months of the games launch (3 if you include the bonus chapters involving Ryu and Akuma)
Seem's an extremely small window of time to decide the game is a failure, and have a sequels content ready to be added in as DLC to the original game...
It's far more realistic that they had this planned from the start, especially as this was at a time when capcom were going hard on the DLC front, given the controversy around Street Fighter vs Tekken DLC characters, and that was released around the same time as this...

      My favorite example is RE4:
Beating story mode on Normal unlocks:
-Mercenaries (a new battle arena game mode)
-A costume set for Leon and Ashley.
-Separate Ways (THE BEST unlockable ever, pretty much a second scenario from Ada's perspective, that is *half as long as the main game*
Beating the game on Professional mode unlocks:
-A second costume set for Ashley and Leon.
-An amazing weapon, the Tommy gun.
-Another weapon, an op smg called Matilda.
-A cool weird alien lazer gun with a weird name idr.
      Beating Separate Ways unlocks:
-Assingment Ada (a single timed mission featuring Ada and Krauser) And yes *even the unlockables have unlockables*
      Beating Assingment Ada unlocks:
-The Tommy gon for use in Ada's campaign.
Getting and S rank in the main game unlocks:
      -Unlimited RPG
      Mercenaries:
-Up to 4 unlockable arenas, featuring different challenges and minibosses
-Up to 5 different unlockable characters, with different loadouts and awesome abilities (Hunk's neckbreaking rampage anyone?)
-Getting a 3 star rank with every character on every map unlocks the Handcannon, the most op weapon in the game.
Some of the requirements for these might be off, haven't played the game in ages, but the actual unlockables are here.
Also, this is comming from Capcom, the same greedy asses behind endings in the dlcs and halfassed, overpriced remasters.
      Its quite sad tbh.

I like the fact that you used the same font as Microsoft for every section!
    That's a nice touch

Honorable mention goes to DLC for a minigame within the game, as well as the DLC that can't be used when it comes out. Let's give a hand for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2!
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 was released on October 25th 2016 and started out as a fighting game. In late november last year, more than a year after the release of the game, the Hero Colosseum update came out. This was a strategic board game with figurines that has nothing to do with the mechanics of the main game, which is punching people in the face. Now, the issue is that the figurines can only be obtained via random packs you can buy with the game's secondary currency, TP Medals. This secondary currency was already in the game and was given out rather generously, allowing you to buy new outfits and attacks instead of using the game's main currency, Zeni. Alongside this free update we saw the release of, you guessed it, the option to buy TP Medals with real-life currency, allowing you to either unlock figurines or buy new outfits or attacks, quite a few of which can give you quite the advantage early on.
As for the second one, TP Medals can also be spent in a particular store where items can only be bought with TP Medals. One of the DLCs involving the character of Bojack (the ginger pirate, not the horseman) requires you to buy outfits from the TP Medal store so that you can train with the guy. However, aside from said outfits being horribly expensive the TP Medal store is only available on Friday to Sunday. And when did this DLC hit? On a... tuesday. So if you bought this DLC you had to wait half a week to be able to play it, and if you don't have a lot of TP Medals you had to grind quite a lot to get enough of them to finish the DLC before the store closes again and you have to wait another week. And since this was before you had the option to buy TP Medals you were just shit out of luck instead of getting urged to cough up the dough. Now, to be fair the outfits were added the week before and were available to buy in the TP Medal store in the weekend before the DLC hit, but not only was there no indication of you needing these outfits, the characters that wear these outfits are not exactly the most popular ones. For those of you not well-versed in the ways of Dragon Ball, Bojack and his crew are from one of the movies, which is neither canon nor the best movie of the bunch, and the character in there are not popular enough to have people go "Holy shit is that Bujin's turban? I gotta have me some of that!" aside from completionists.
So good on ya, Xenoverse 2 and your weird DLC shenanigans.

Beriorn Oh, but the Bojack DLC fuckwittery wasn't done quite there. As mentioned, you needed to buy certain outfits to access it, which itself is weird and unusual. But on top of that, the game lied to you. If you tried talking to Bojack, it would say that you needed a single outfit to proceed. This was not the case, you needed to complete all the outfits for his crew and himself to proceed. As far as I'm aware, months after the DLC was released, this has not been fixed.

Oh right, that tomfoolery. So that means that instead of needing X number of TP Medals you needed... what, three or four times that amount?

      Beriorn Something like that.
Now that I think about it, the game also sold a season pass that did not include all the DLC.

Wait, you can only access the TP Medal store on Friday to Sunday?
I am 100% certain that I've been able to access that store any day of the week. Although I've noticed that some items sometimes aren't available (I guess those must be the Friday to Sunday items).

DanVzare that is the case currently. At that time it was not.

Man, I miss complaining about DLC. I remember when Final Fantasy 13-2 came out and did basically everything on this list, and it got called out for it. I guess publishers got smart and just changed the game to lootboxes/MTs in the current year. I miss 2012...

I miss 2002. Games were just games back then.

*Ivan Karamazov* - I grew up with games around that time, but lately I have been buying some games that were released around that time that I have never got the chance to play before and I just miss how you can get the game as a whole, no worries about DLC or some manipulation to give more money.
