July 7, 1520, Aztec territory
After the slaughter of Spaniards in their hasty flight from Tenochtitlan, Hernán Cortés and his barely 400 men exhausted and pursued by 100,000 Aztec warriors, they have no choice but to turn on themselves to face their enemies.
Without artillery and having lost almost all their horses and arquebuses, the Spaniards faced a tough hand-to-hand battle in which they could barely hold their ground.
When the situation becomes untenable, five horsemen, including Cortés, make the desperate decision to gallop out of the Spanish formation in the direction of the Mexica leader.
Making their way through the immense crowd of enemy warriors, horses and men suffering numerous impacts from spears and arrows, they manage to reach his objective and kill him, which causes the disbandment of the Aztec troops.
This confrontation, remembered today with the name of "Battle of Otumba", marks a before and after in the conquest of the greatest Empire of Pre-Columbian America.
Months before these events, Cortés's contingent had reached the coasts of Mesoamerica, landing in present-day Veracruz and establishing alliances with the natives of the area, who informed him of the existence of a great Empire further west.
Hernán Cortés, determined to undertake the company of his conquest, orders that the Spanish ships be disabled so that withdrawal is an option.
