  • A day of trains in and around Toledo.
First stop is the Amtrak station.
    1. The westbound Lake Shore #49 arrives, and the Lake Cities #353 departs for Detroit and points West.
Much of the day was spent near Vickers Junction, were Conrail's ex NYC mainline crossed CSX's Toledo Terminal line.
    2. A pair of westbound Conrail merchandise trains.
    3. An eastbound Conrail piggyback.
    4. Westbound Conrail with some interesting side dump cars loaded with large rocks.
    5. Southbound CSX power movement with what looks like 4 SD50s and a SD35 from the docks.
    6. CNW & UP power on a westbound Conrail merchandise train. Lots of autoracks on this one.
    7. Eastbound Conrail double stacks - TV200
    8. Eastbound Conrail dimensional train. An unusal mix of oversized loads on this one.
    9. Two more Conrail westbounds. First an intermodal, and then a merchandise train.
    10. A quick stop at Wallbridge where a southbound CSX trains heads into their yard there. The 3rd unit is #2002, the GP38 named the "All American Diesel" by Trains magazine.
Late in the afternoon I headed up to Alexis tower on the North side of town. Alexis was the junction of the Conrail & CSX lines from Detroit to Toledo as well as the Ann Arbor RR.
    11. Northbound CSX freight passes the tower and heads under the Alexis Rd bridge.
    12. Northbound NS freight heads under I-75 near the Ann Arbor RR yard. This is a couple of miles south of Alexis.
    13. Back at the tower, a southbound Conrail freight passes.
    14. A GTW southbound comes off the Ann Arbor tracks and onto the Conral to head into Toledo.
    15. The NS northbound seen earlier passes the tower, followed by a CSX northbound.
    16. Conrail northbound heads for Michigan with an interesting mix of power, including an SD50, a GP15 & a yard switcher.

Back in the 90 I lived in a little house right at Vickers crossing. Corner of Drouillard Rd and Wales. I could sit in the living room and watch the railfans filming on the Wales Rd crossing where much of this footage was taken.

Thanks Dan for the trip back in time abit. Sure miss ol Big Blue! NS runs the Chicago Line alot different than CR did back in the day. After dark, that line was teaming with trains!

Spent a lot of time at Vickers with my father growing up, almost every saturday we would go down there to watch trains from the early 90's up until CSX and NS took over Conrail, a lot of childhood memories that this video brings back.

+Steph Curry I was there about a month ago, and that was my first trip since they finished the overpasses & closed the road crossings. Looks like it will be a nice hangout in the summer.

+Dan Cluley Too bad they moved the signal bridge to where you can't see what's lined up though.

    Thanks for the memories.
I spent many days and hrs out at Vickers.
One day I'll get all my VHS converted to DVD.
Heck , I probably met you several times out there through the early 90s.
Thanks again for the videos you post.

I miss living by Alexis. Too bad I never got to see shots like these, though.

it's a shame they took the crossings and the nyc signal bridge down

I was just there a few months ago, and I do miss the signal bridge and the horns. On the other hand I kind of like the different variety of shots you can get now with the roads closed and the new overpasses.

Dan Cluley ever check out the abandoned prr toledo yard on Waled and E Andrus rd? Conrail last used it in the 90's and theirs some cars and rails way back. The bridge over E Broadway st still has the prr keystone on it

My grandparents use to live at 1956 North Superior street then. I remember visiting and hearing the train horns from the house. Always made it easier to sleep. The other thing I remember well. My grandfathers ability to navigate around stopped trains at crossings. If there was a stopped train. He knew the detor. Before he retired, he worked for the C&O out of Wallbridge.

That's cool. It is certainly easy to get caught at a crossing there, and not always easy to figure out how to get through the neighborhoods to get around.

What do you see on all the freight cars on Conrail's trains in Toledo? NO GRAFFITI! These days sadly there are EXACTLY NO FREIGHT CARS that do not have graffiti.
