    Glad to hear regular motor oil will work, I was told light weight non-detergent. Thanks for the video.

    Great video. I just climbed my first windmill this week, at age 65. not too bad. But I surely need to get back up there to check the oil now that I know there's oil to check. ;). Also, mine has a small square platform with one corner knocked off. Kinda sketchy gettin up there.

    If you used a trans/gear oil with thicker viscosity, after you verified both the shaft and punp-rod gear feed ports being clear, you'd probably have a little less leakage. The design being over 100 years old, ya might want to also check for excessive seal wear on the vacuum pump at the bottom of your rig and the guide-links attached to the wooden pump rod, if your Aeromotor has a bit of age on her. Like the engineering of an old mechanical pocket watch, with a little scheduled service, they'll keep ticking along.

      We change the Vacuum pumps about every 5 years.

    Doesn't the furling hand lever set some kinda a brake to where the blades can't turn while your up there? I gave you a thumbs up because you made it back down safely :) Thanks for capturing this.

    hmmm.... we put a step up so you can see in the oil well and welded it to the deck, made life easier, and a safety cage around the ladder

    • @farmdude
      @farmdude  Před 2 lety

      That sounds like a good idea. As far as as a safety cage goes I don’t think I have ever seen a windmill with one.

    Any idea how to service those bigger windmills, like you have in the background there? Specifically adding hydraulic oil. We have one and can't seem to keep it running. No technicians to be found. Thanks

    • @farmdude
      @farmdude  Před 2 lety

      all windmills do wear out sometimes the berings need to be replaced i would not advise hydrolic oil. i use used motor oil in mine you can also use 90 wt oil. is what they typically call for. To service them i just climb on up and hope i dont fall. if it is pumping and no water check the leathers in your casing. i have another video on how to do that

  • @mattrobinson5445
    @mattrobinson5445 Před 2 lety +1

    how do you prime the well after not running for a while? I am having a hard time getting water coming up.

    • @farmdude
      @farmdude  Před 2 lety +1

      They should self prime. The check valves may have something holding them open. Or your down pipe May have a hole in it. Or the leathers may need a day to soften up. If nothing after a day check your check valves

    I have vertigo but I want a windmill. Maybe I can setup an oiler on a pump so I don't have to go up.

    • @farmdude
