  • Find out how to draw the Circle of Fifths and why it's so incredibly useful! Learn how to use the circle of fifths to work out all the major keys, all the minor keys and all their key signatures. When it comes to music theory, the circle of fifths is one of the most important concepts you can learn. Useful for notation, transposition, understanding key signatures, and familiarising yourself with the general structure of music, it is well worth your time to add the circle of fifths to your vault of music theory knowledge. The circle of fifths can seem a little overwhelming at first, but you will soon realise how easy it really is to understand. The circle of fifths is the relationship among the 12 tones of the chromatic scale, their corresponding key signatures, and the associated major and minor keys. Looking at the circle - the outer section shows the actual key signatures and accidentals, the middle circle represents the corresponding major keys and the inner circle represents the corresponding minor keys. The reason it’s called the circle of fifths is because of the interval relationships between each key signature. Each key, or accidental is a fifth up from the previous. It's amazing how it all works. The circle of fifths is an essential tool in music theory, and you’ll be surprised how often it comes in handy. With the massive amounts of information that musicians need to memorise on a regular basis, we can tell you that the circle of fifths will make your life a lot easier.

I just want to endorse all that you've said. Myself as a former music teacher and professional musician, it cannot be stressed how important this information is. Fortunately for me, when I was a child, my piano teacher drilled all of this information into me pretty thoroughly. On the practical side and as an organist, I was invited to perform with a dance orchestra years ago but there was no music for me to follow plus many of the pieces used were unfamiliar to me. I was sitting close to the pianist and I simply asked him what key each piece or song was in. From there, even if I had no idea of the tune, I could play a meaningful accompaniment which seemed to surprise many other people. Knowledge of the Circle of Fifths was so helpful plus a knowledge of primary or principal chords. The rest of it was all very predictable because most music follows fairly standard guidelines. If you, as a reader, are an early learner, start to memorise the Circle of Fifths and it will stand you in very good stead for your musical future. When I was teaching (I'm now 76 and now retired) I also gave my students a simple way of remembering the order of sharps which was, "Fry's Chorcolates Give Delight After Every Bite". The flats are the same letters in reverse or you can remember the word BEAD - then add GCF. There are many ways of making the order stick in the memory and that's just one. If by chance, you play Piano Accordion, the bass buttons are arranged in the same order.

As a songwriter who didn't know my keys, I often hunted and pecked around the keyboard to find chords and melodies that sounded good together. Thank you so much! I have been playing and composing music for decades and I have some weak areas due to my impatience. I just want to move on to making music! But that caused me to jump over getting good theoretical grounding in those areas. I am at a point where I am identifying those weak areas and strengthening them. The circle of fifths has always mystified me but you helped me demystify it so that I can better use it as a composition tool. I am a teacher at heart, regardless of the subject. I cannot express how much you have helped me. I used to think that learning theory was a waste of time and would focus mostly on building up my technique. But not anymore (thanks to your epic explanations). The theory I've learnt from you and my music teacher has helped me bring another layer of depth to my violin, piano and guitar playing and even try my hand at composing. Most people who try teaching (anything really) just show off and try to convince everyone of how good they are in their chosen profession. But you never do that. You are humble and a delight to watch. THANK YOU so very much for what you do. My kindest regards to you, my dear sir.

This was just amazing! Thank you so much for putting up this video! Well, so far, all of the videos in this channel that I've watched are excellent and very clear!
I'm just a music lover that has very recently become quite interested in understanding music theory, so my knowledge is quite patchy, so I'm gladly surprised how easily I understood the circle of 5ths from this video! Up until yesterday it was a completely mysterious topic to me!
I have a question, and I'm aware it's probably just because I don't know enough. I was a bit confused about the C# scale having all flats. Why is the note one semitone down from C# called B# and not C? I do understand that the note in the stave is a B, so it must be a B#. But the key in the keyboard is the same as C. I guess my question is whether they are truly the exact same note, or if they're only the same note on a piano/keyboard, but can be played different in another instrument or with a different tuning? Is this somehow related to different tuning systems, like just intonation vs. 12-tone equal temperament?
I'm sorry if this is a basic question and / or if my terminology is off. As I said, all this is fairly new to me :)
Once again, thank you for this amazing channel and the great work you do!
