    I’m sure it’s rare but can the bII resolve deceptively to vi? The Beatles have a song where they move from the bII in root position directly to the I skipping the V altogether. I’m guessing not very conventional.

    So I'm watching this again after 7 months. I've been playing piano for two years and discovered your channel early on. I was never intimidated even though I had no idea what you were talking about. But you opened up the world of music theory and that has helped me tremendously. I don't watch Rick Beato yet for his music theory classes, since he cannot teach simple ideas. As soon as I have my post-Doctorat degree, I'll try him out again. Until then, I'll stick with your channel. I'm still frustrated that my keyboard technique hasn't caught up to my theoretical skill level, but it is inspiring. I'm always interested in reading your comments section, since it is one of the most polite and informative groups on the Tubes. That is thanks to the work that Alex and you have done. Many heavy metal band members watch and learn from your channel. That is a testament to the power of music. Merci beaucoup.

    Merci beaucoup, you really have a soothing theme and I will eventually buy the score. I recently had to suffer a surgical intervention, and I dreaded the recovery room and wanted to avoid another stay in the ICU. I am a veteran especially with my shoulder, I live with a FURS syndrome. The operation went better than expected, and when I was in the recovery room there were only two machines making noise. But they must have been either a perfect fourth or fifth apart, and I was dreaming of music matters. And then a nurse told me when I woke up that I was in the recovery room. I can't remember exactly what I said, but I talked about an angelic song, and that I had no pain. I was chuffed. I sent a mail to my surgeon explaining the importance of sounds and he was very interested. You might spontaneously contact your local hospital and discuss the importance of pleasing noises. They will probably have you get in touch with medical equipment manufacturers. I think this is an unexplored topic but is so important for people in vulnerable situations.

    Hi Gareth, I have a question about two-handed piano chords. As a basis for four part harmony I start with the root and 5th in the left hand and 3rd and octave in the right hand i.e. C major = C + G in left and E + C in right. But what about inversions? Should I just move the root up an octave to give G + C in left and E + C in right? Or should I go back to the original triad, invert it and then add the octave? I.e. E + C in the left and G + E in the right? I'm pretty sure both choices are 'correct' in that they contain the right notes but is there a convention about how to split inverted chords across two hands? And how would it work with 7th chords and other added tone chords? Thanks Steve p.s. couldn't find a specific lesson about this but would be really useful to have one!

    • @MusicMattersGB
      @MusicMattersGB Před 5 dny

      Your approaches are perfectly valid. There’s no set way of doing this. The bottom line is ‘if it sounds good go for it’. Generally, ensure you have the root and the 3rd sounding in the chord. The 5th is good to include but it’s optional. Try to avoid big spaces between the hands.

    I'm trying to compose a Harp sheet music book of 22 songs. I learned a lot from this one video. My melodies are usually unique to the measure but follow a logical chord progression. I never write a 12 measure melody line in 3 lines of music before. I will try that in my next few songs I'll write and try to use it as a habit. The old masters used an 8 measure call and response 2 lines melody arrangements. I seemed to even overlook even that? anyway, my one measure melodies are quite musical and sounds just lovely just the same. I wonder if you have used them before? The melody in this video sounds a bit childish to me. I wonder if its used for children's songs. I truly think that the old masters call and response is more mature then what you present - or am I wrong?

I submit a question to you: I am a student of composition and I always wonder with what key should I start my piece with? Are there any rules or is the choice random? Why did you put 2 flats there, why not 3 or 1, or sharps? And then this modulates in which key should I go? is it a problem that has always worried me, a problem of choice, how do it choose? Could one of his very clear videos make about it? Thanks and a greeting from Rome, Italy. Carlo

    Related to the crab canon and possibly of more musical interest, in that the listener has a chance of hearing what is going on are pieces of which Haydn has left a few examples. Could you consider how you would set about writing palindromic music? It occurs to me that in music of this sort some adventurous harmonies could be an advantage in drawing attention to the palindromic structure.
