KOI POND**I BUILT A DIY VENTURI TO FILL MY SKY POND**🤔👍*

  • In this video we test different ways to fill my upside down aquarium (Sky Pond) once its re-fitted to my Koi Fish Pond after a winter storage... I built a DIY Venturi to see if it would remove the air from the tank and replace with water and test other methods to remove the air to create a vacuum to draw the water in so the fish can float into the tanks outside the pond...

    Interesting video Andy. The reason the Venturi couldn’t remove the last couple inches is because due to the weight of water in the tank pulling down, the pressure of the air left in the tank
    Is much lower than atmospheric pressure. Also Andy I do not recommend using a hose on full through those canisters. They work best at a low flow rate. At higher rates they do not remove the chlorine. Just keep them for your trickle in. I have tested various canisters and you would be surprise how low a flow you need to remove all the chlorine. Keep up the great work. 😊

    Hi Andy if you are continueing to look into other ideas for the sky pond if you can get your hands on one why not try an inflattable pool pump. They are a hand pump function and have both inflate and deflate functions, pumping the handle on deflate should work to pump out the air from the sky pond but not sure how well.
    But its worth a shot, if you can get your hands on one, even some of the electric ones have the deflate function too

    Its a weight of the water…is exceeding the air moving ability of the pump or hose. Vacuum has MUCH more power so thats why that works. I went through all of these options as well. One fix would be to lower the tanks that 2-3 inches then your venturi would work.

      it works like it does in a large fish tank or on a rank system the longer the tube that the air is coming in from the more preasure that is needed to maintain it the same at the begining of the line to the one at the end.
      a pump that can run an air stone at in a 60ltr 2ftx1ftx1ft tank will run at a lower out put as a 4ftx3ftx3ft tank the venturi works on the same math the wieght of the water preasure needs an equal preasure to run the venturi

    Could you take a risk but compromise… use a inflatable pump. They often have inlet and outlets that can be used. Bit of hose on the end of the inlet and turn it on. If your lucky you could empty the air and turn it off quick. Or leave 10-20mm and do that your original way.

    having watched the video I appreciate the time and effort put into seeing if the venturi would work as well as using the pond vac and the pump. My issue is that unlike your pond mine is at ground level so not so easy to get anything into the observation tower ( aquarium ) and also the pond is netted. I also have a pond vac but as you said the time it takes to set up and then dismantle is far too long. If I do a 15% water change then the water will drop below the observation tower and needs to be refilled each time so I have decide that for now I will do a slightly smaller water change so that the water doesn't drop below the bottom of the aquarium and doesn't need refilling every time. Not ideal but it will make my life easier. It would appear that moving forward it's going to be suck suck sucking time for me unfortunately.

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  Před rokem

      Could you not do the regular water changes and create a trickle in system so you get a steady continual water change instead of dropping the levels? Good point about the ground level issue. I can imagine you on your hands and knees with the hose pipe.. 😄😉👍

      @skeggy Před rokem +1

      You could set up permanent pipework in inch and a half that your vac just plugs onto when needed like a standpipe on the outside with an inch and a half rubber boot on the end that you pop your vac hose in

    I wonder if the restriction should be further away from the vertical pipe? Should the pipe be smaller or could you put a higher volume of water through the existing pipe?

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  Před rokem

      The venturi seems to be more efficient when it was on a shorter pipe, but I needed the length to get all the way into the tank. The thing with more water in is too much chlorine getting past the filters and wasting so much water. I thought about bigger pipes but would still have the same pressures from the tap or the pump so would loose more than I gained.. this one's been real interesting trial that you probably see some more of in the future...🤔😉👍

  • @DadHD
    @DadHD Před rokem +2

    Very informative bud! Having just about finished my pond a sky pond has always stuck in my head from when you first did it.
    Think the Venturi air pipe was too long and water pressure wasn't enough to stop backflow and filling the air pipe meaning that the air had too far to be pulled down.
    Solution 1: shorten all pipes and hold it inside at the top with hose pipes keeping the outlet in the water.
    Solution 2: non return valve on the air pipe to stop water flowing up the air tube meaning air pipe won't fill too high with water making it harder to pull the air down further.
    Solution 3: Just use the 3ft of bloody hose! 😆😆😆
    No idea if these ideas hold any value... Other than the hose... If it's not broke...
    You still using fok? Just outta curiosity!

    • @KoiPondLifestyle
      @KoiPondLifestyle  Před rokem +1

      Hiya, thanks for that. Some possible solutions there I could look into. The lengths of pipe is an interesting one as enough needed to not allow air backing the tank and enough to reach the top which was the fail part. But as you said, I have a few feet of hose pipe that does the job for free...😊😉👍

      @@KoiPondLifestyle You problem with any method of sucking air out and having the water sucked up to replace it the weight of the water will be greater than the weight of the air so your best method would be to pump the water in and and have a way for the air to escape the easiest way to make it as hands free as possible would be to have some solid pipe from the sump pump that will be just shy of the top of the inside of the sky tank then cable tie or glue a second solid pipe to it that touches the top of the inside of the sky tank and cut notches in the top so you get as much air out as possible and have a hose off the second pipe that has a float on the end that's not in the tank and floats on the surface of the main pond all you have to do is plug it in and watch it lol

      Hiya, as your pond temps raise the water won't be able to hold as much saturated oxygen as it did when the water was cold. I would suggest that your air is run once the water has raised to 10degC or 50 F so as to ensure your fish have sufficient air saturation in the water 24hrs a day.. I would say leaving the air off above those temps could be putting the health of your fish at risk... Hope this helps. 😉👍
