Hi Sweet Friends, Hope you found my use of the food mill interesting. I just love it and use it for so many things. Do you have one or have you ever used one? Love, Mary

Just found out about a Food Mill and you! Will make my next years harvest so much easier!! Soooo Many apples and tomatoes and pears and plums OH MY! Still a newbie at the garden and harvesting. Loved your info!

So I made applesauce and included the peels as you wrote about in your email. Did almost 8 pints. Immersion blender worked great, added a touch of lemon juice as I was cutting, a splash of water. Once puréed, a little sugar and cinnamon. Now the jars are popping on the counter. 😋😋. Great suggestion to leave the peel on and do much simpler than the food mill. Grandson’s chickens will enjoy the frozen cores. 🍎👍❤️

I've had an old foodmill for years, and done my applesauce that way. I love the color of my applesauce made with my old McIntosh apple tree apples! I'm completely spoiled by my pink and delicious applesauce, ha ha! A great idea about putting your cooked tomatoes through it, I never thought of that. I'll be trying that next year! Thank you, Mary!

I cook and use the food mill like you do Mary, then let the applesauce cool, put in freezer containers, freeze. We are finishing up what I froze last Fall ( now June). Delicious!

Hi Nancy, Thanks so much for visiting!! And I am so happy to hear that you like my channel. That's wonderful!! I definitely think you could freeze this applesauce. Just make sure that you leave some head space in the jar for expansion. And the plastic lids are a great idea. Thanks again for the kind words!! I'm so happy that you're here!! Love, Mary

I truly enjoyed watching this video! You are so descriptive about what you are doing and your voice sounds so kind. I made homemade applesauce tonight, using a Chinois for the first time. It took forever to smash my cooked apples through. I definitely need a food mill in my life! Lol!

Made this. It was great and very easy, simple. I halved the recipe, used a mix of Granny Smith, Gala, and a couple of other types of apples. I also added about a half teaspoon of salt and a couple of teaspoons of sugar.
Thanks for the recipe and the demo.

Thank you for getting me back to using my food mill. The energy is so much better than the blender's. I have had a food mill for years but hardly ever used it. So I am excited to start using it for soups and sauces, as you said, too.

Thank you! Tonight I am making applesauce with the skin on. I had not thought of just leaving the core but that sounds like a great idea that's less wasteful. I had never heard of a food mill. I'm going to consider one for when I have a larger kitchen. So far, I haven't had a need for one. Thanks again.

I don't have a food mill, but I do have an emulsifier. Will that work? Or a blender? I'd have to remove the core and seeds, but so what, I'd do it anyway. This looks wonderful...I'm going to try it. Oh, my Mom made applesauce and froze in quart packages. It was wonderful.....great with pork chops

I LOVE your videos but honestly it is easier to peel and core the apples than it is to use the mill. Bought one specifically for this and it took so much longer then just peeling the apples. I know you say it has more nutrients in the peel but I don’t taste the difference. I hate the mill But love the recipe.

It’s not as easy as it looks to use a food mill. Lol. I ordered one and have learned the one received said 2 qts (no way is it 2 qts). I’ll reorder…. But I’ll look at the dimensions and double hooks for it to be balanced on the bowl. It taste delicious. Thanks for great instructions.

I'm wondering if my food mill just isn't a a good one. It's cuisinart, but on the small hole, I just end up getting juice, and almost no apple. And on the large one, it doesn't strain anything like residual skin or seed (after I peeled and cored generally).

Jennifer Bugg - Hi Jennifer, Thank you so much for visiting. I am sorry to hear about your food mill. The one I have is older (with a wooden handle) that I purchased years ago. It works great. I have a question. When you were using the small hole and were getting juice, did you continue to process all the apples and then try mixing it in the bowl? Or was it just all completely juice? Sometimes, it can start out a bit watery but then becomes thicker as you continue to process all the apples. Fill me in and maybe we can diagnose this together and get to the bottom of the problem.

Caramel sauce is easy, but, you risk burning yourself and having a mess. Melting sugar to the correct color is quite an art because you can go from zero to BURNT BLACK in a heartbeat. It's worth it, tho!!! I made a little mushed up fried apples for mom, then mixed a little caramel sauce in it for her. The goal was to give her that caramel apple she craves every Fall. She LOVED it. :-D

Thank you so much, Mary! You brought tears to my eyes because there's no family old enough to realize and appreciate my endeavors, so I rarely hear compliments. I'm not in it for the glory, but, sometimes it's just nice to hear.
Thank you for asking about my mom. She will be 92 on Dec. 7th. Yep ... Pearl Harbor Day. She is bed-ridden and, bless her heart, cannot move any part of her own body. She was sharp as a tack in her mind, when she came to live with me 3 years ago, but, has declined for about the last 8 months. To say I am truly grateful to still have her would be a gross understatement.
I'm sorry to hear about your dad :( Your pain is still quite fresh. My dad went to be with Jesus on March 10th, 1992. I feel your pain. I still miss him.
I am praying that God will allow my mom to be with me until she's 101. Underneath all of this lies a very painful history. I believe God has given us this time to make new and happy memories. Someday, I might tell you about it. I can count on one hand the people who are aware of that.
In ALL things ... HANG IN THERE! The BEST is YET to come!!! :-D

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  Před 4 lety +1

That’s a great question. I’m not really sure. Mine is quite old. If you notice it has a wooden handle. Because it has a wooden handle I can’t put mine in the dishwasher. I think if I was looking for a new one now, I would find one that was 100% stainless steel so that I could put it in the dishwasher. I would also look to see what country the food mill was made in. I would try to find one that was made in the US or in Europe...if they’re still making them. Keep me posted on what you decide to purchase.

I will collect apples people don't want, let drop off their trees. Yes they need to be cut out, but they have not been sprayed or waxed! Sadly the one tree got cut down and the other is dying :( now I have to find me another source for free, untreated apples …. I just heard some one say to peel today's apples, even if you wash them well, you can still scrape off the wax. So I tried it and sure enough, I have been eating this junk for years LOL. Any way, my untreated apples I will just cut out bad spots and usually the seeds, simmer them and throw them in the blender. Blends the skins perfectly, you don't know the skins were never taken off! Plus red skins give a beautiful color!!!
