- VLOG #007 - sees me head to Phil Parkers in London to try out a new mouthpiece for my Jazz setup. Monettes (B2S3, B2.5S3, B4S3), Warburton 3MD (9 Backbore), My orginal Harrelson SWE & current GR 66MD were all tried. Which one to choose?!
Big thanks to Phil Parkers for their advice.

The more I research mouthpieces, the more I see a HUGE different in monette vs everyone else. Thank you for recording and sharing your experience with us.
No problem! I'm still playing this mouthpiece 2 and a half years later!! I love it. Have you tried one?
@@duncanfraserjazz - I have not yet. I'm looking for a dealer.or 2nd hand seller in Texas and that's been harder to find than I thought it would be.
@@everydayshowday5151 can’t say about dealers, there’s only a few places to get them in the UK. But maybe try checking out some of the trumpet/brass for sale groups on Facebook? There seems to be a steady stream of them on there. My advice for sizes is you can probably stretch to a size bigger (rim wise) than your usual one as they never feel that big and play so easy. Good luck in the hunt!
@@duncanfraserjazz I'm currently on a 3C bach megatone. I'm getting back into playing again. I have the range back of what I had in college ( double D-Eb) but not the endurance ...yet. I feel bright on a megatone and want a warm fat sound. There is pros and cons to that however, would you feel that a monette would be a wise investment for that outcome as a goal?
@@everydayshowday5151 You'll certainly notice a bigger sound with the regular monette range, so will help in getting a fatter sound. I don't know much about the lead piece options. I think one of the ones I test here (B4?) is the 3C "equivalent". Also, if you are returning to playing I would recommend getting plenty of long tones into your practice routine. I have found them more effective than any $300 mouthpiece in enhancing tone to be honest!
Bravo 🎺
Good video! After years of contemplating the "which mouthpiece is best" conundrum, I have come to the conclusion that the room acoustics, and how I happen to be playing on a given day seems to influence the sound more than the mouthpiece. I know there are individuals who might swear by one particular mouthpiece that works best, but I'm always open to try something new and "wonderful"! Please tell me if you have a similar or different view. I think I would have to see a really big improvement in tone or ease of playing to pop for one of the high priced "miracle" mouthpieces. While I'm ranting, the thing I've noticed that makes the biggest bang for the buck is to clean the mouthpiece really well, and clean the trumpet too!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. What are you playing on at the moment? For me, Equipment is always the last thing I look to change, the problem is usually me!! I try to be consistent and make a sound I like on whatever I'm playing, wherever. If I've exhausted all avenues then I'll look at equipment. I'm not big on chopping and changing all the time, I tend to go for something and stick with it for a long time. This video was done in Sept 2018 and I'm still using this Monette and the same horn (which I've had for 12 years now). Whilst I agree about the price of some of the high end equipment, I will say the difference in sound between what I was playing and this Monette was astronomical. You are also 100% right, a clean mouthpiece is the best thing, when we argue about differences that feel big to us, we are talking about size differences of 100ths of an inch sometimes, so cleaning the dirt off is often like a different mouthpiece!
@@duncanfraserjazz Great reply, I am glad to hear what you have to say. I'm playing a Yamaha 8310 II with a Yamaha Bobby Shew mouthpiece. I'm thinking of getting a Monet B6 simply because I saw a youtube video of a guy playing with one and liked the sound, but haven't decided. I wish there were more guys like you willing to share experiences about equipment, etc. Thank you for taking the time to post videos and reply. Do you do lessons on Skype or zoom?
@@edstud1 ah cool, my other Horn is a Yamaha (8335LA). Can’t remember how open the 8310 is in comparison, but when I put my monette in the Yamaha it’s super open - ML bore open feeling horn + Mouthpiece with big hole in! I don’t particularly like the combination, but the Yamaha stays in the box 360 days a year tbh! If you can pick up a used B6 - it’s quite a popular size so shouldn’t be too tricky - then it might be worth a try. You’ve got to stick with the Monette gear a bit to get used to it though.
Yes, I do teach online. Drop me an email if you want to schedule something or even just talk Trumpet!
@@duncanfraserjazz Sounds great, thanks for your thoughts, I'm a little busy today, but will get back with you tomorrow if you're free, what is the best time of day? I'm in the western USA so big time zone difference!
@@edstud1 cool. Probably sometime mid morning for you. Yeah that time difference is a big one! I can never catch any baseball from the west coast, can just about make it through sone east coast games but it’s definitely time for bed after that 😂
Drop me an email anyway - duncanfraserjazz@gmail.com
Duncan, wonder if you’ve tried Monette’s Traditional plus mouthpiece and your thoughts on it.
Hi Dennis, No I haven’t. Not even seen one in the flesh - I don’t know how popular they are, most players I come across in London are either on Monette’s like my one or GR’s. But if the sound and ease of playing are similar to the STC range then they’d be well worth a go!
Hi Duncan I am buying a B2S3 Classic Monette. I think thats what you bought too. Still doing good? Its my first Monette Mouthpiece. Would like to hear your thoughts after using it for a while
Hi - yep 2 and a bit years later on I’m still using it 100% of the time and don’t even think about changing I love it. About to hit the studio and record on it in the next month. You might find it a little strange at first if it’s your first one but stick with it and it’ll be the best move you made. Once you’ve played the classic models you can get into the prana & resonance stuff. I’m not too fussed about them though as a) I am very happy with my current setup (still the same as this video) and b) they are quite difficult to get hold of to try in the U.K.
Good luck, let me know how it goes and where to hear you on it 🎺
@@duncanfraserjazz Thanks bro I will
What horn are you playing?
Hey man, in this video it's my Geneva Joshol horn. It's from about 10 years ago when the guy was hand building all of them. They are a bit bigger now and I recently looked up the specs of how they build this horn now and it's very different from my set up. This one has an extra thick copper plated lead pipe with reverse tuning slide, I reckon the valves are from a kanstul and it has a 4 1/2 inch red brass bell. As is the way with these type of hand built horns I lucked out a bit and got a good one! Always looking for that Early 70's Bach Vindabona 65G though!!
@@nathanielwilliford2589 Thanks man
Is the Monette a Classic or Prana?
Hey Chad - It's a Classic. I still happily play it 2 years on!
No difference all the shit, the same shit.
