  • Went to hang with Charley Davis and talk about his new book, "A Tribute to Wiliam Adam: His Teachings and His Routine." It was a great hang and he imparted some real trumpet knowledge. Please enjoy and here's a link to Charley's book, all proceeds go to trumpet scholarship funds - www.balquhidder...

I got this book at ITG 3 years ago.....I still can't believe how much is in it. This is easily a "desert island" book for any trumpet player.

The "mantra" Bill gave me back in 78 was, "Play through the sound the sound that you hear." And he told me to not play a note until I heard it first, inside.

Thanks, Charley. He talked about why he wouldn't ever write it down - because his teaching was so tailored to each student. He thought it would be misinterpreted. But your book and compilation of info from all of us who had the tremendous blessing to study with him really gets to his philosophy - the general and the particular. Listening to you recite his "tomes" brings me right back to Room 333. Thank you so much.

Fantastic! I've been playing for 40 years and have never been "hip" to lead pipe buzzing. Took a skype lesson with Jim Manley who showed me some lead pipe exercises (a la Bill Adam) and they have exponentially changed my playing for the better. I believe you call it the "the skill of chill". And, that's exactly what it is! Will be buying the book ASAP and calling Charley for a lesson next.
    Thanks again!

I second that! It is a fantastic resource, and (performed correctly) can aid even the most seasoned of professionals.

Hi, Charley! You might not remember me. I was one of your trumpet students. I think I was also kind of a pain in your ass... oh, well.. too late know. Anyway, I loved your video & I thought I would say, "hello!'. your friend John

Had a few master classes with him @ WBA concert band festival 2003-2006.
He seems to be really good with his hands as he said he made wood mouthpieces for personal use. Those trumpet stands look uber cool. He should look into selling those for "non profit" as well.

I agree - they are very cool. He said he bought them at IKEA! Then just covered the wooden "hook" part with an old mouse pad he cut into strips and glued on so the bells wouldn't get damaged.

That's awesome. Can u make a vid about leadpipe buzzing, where you should start, what notes are difficult, and how to break through those harmonic barriers?

Don’t want to be wet blanket but I just got the book after a lot of deliberation since it as twice the price of anything similar. I couldn’t find any detailed advice on how to practice the exercises despite that being stated on the website. I already have the material contained in other books so it was in anticipation of this claim that I bought it. If you don’t have Arban, Clarke etc and don’t intend buying them then it is a compact way of obtaining the notes. There obviously was a reason Bill Adam never published his own method book and this tells us why. I just look at the money I spent on it as a charity donation. Sorry, but I was very disappointed.
