- On April 6, 2018, Sixteen people died, and 13 others were injured, after a bus taking the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team to a playoff game collided with a transport truck at a rural intersection in Saskatchewan. It was an awful day that devastated Canada and the hockey community.
Greg Rider is a singer/songwriter from Waterdown, Ontario. He grew up playing hockey from age 4 to 18 when he decided to leave the sport and attend college. The song was written a week after the crash while Greg was living in Nashville, TN. He saw what happened that day on Facebook and the only way he could grasp what happened was by putting his feelings into a song.
'Sixteen Sticks' was released to the world on December 18th, 2020 after gaining popularity on TikTok. Greg kept the song hidden for years after receiving some negative feedback when he first posted it. He took the song down and tucked it away. After connecting with a survivor years later, the player gave him his blessing and said "more people need to hear this". That's all Greg needed and it was time to give the song another shot.

I grew up in PA, but fell in love with a man who grew up in the Humboldt area. The accident happened just weeks before I planned to move to Humboldt to be with him.
I have a photo of my brother 3 days before the accident, he signed the papers to go to the Bronco’s tryout camp.
The amount of times that my entire family (dad, mom and stepparents) were on the bus with my brother to travel western Canada made it incredibly hard to think of.
My mom couldn’t look at my brother for a week without breaking out in tears. She still has anxiety every time he gets on a bus (he decided not to play Juniors).
The day after the accident I left Humboldt to go home. I stopped for fuel. All of Humboldt was a complete ghost town. There was a grey cloud over our town and everyone looked like zombies.
We thank you for your support. This video is in my playlist and I skip it a lot because I can’t listen to it without crying.

Was a young teen in the early '80s playing in PA. Spent a lot of time traveling those roads in Sask. playing hockey. Just found this great song not sure how i missed it til now. Thank you for your music, awesome job.

As someone who has been to Humboldt, have driven the highway thousands of times, have a nephew who plays hockey, the events of April 6, 2018, will always shake me to my very core.
I’m from tisdale this hits hard once playing hockey and riding those buses all over the province. Blow this song up the entire world needs to hear this.
I've been playing hockey since I was 6 years old growing up in Arlington Massachusetts. I still play no check to this day. This song touches me for many reasons, not just hockey. It's a heart breaker, although sad, it brings me great memories of the ones I have lost too young. I appreciate very much the heart felt thoughts that brought Greg to put this song together. A Hockey Hymn!!! we who work with Junior hockey players See the sixteen Broncos and all others lost their lives that day and all the injured and live with that dark day memory everyday of their lives. People don’t understand how dangerous hockey is. Not just on the ice but off. Grew up is Saskatchewan and those roads are no joke. When this happens I decided my son would never never play hockey outside of our local frozen pond.
