From drinking games and sex talk to jigsaws and tea. Care homes in the Netherlands have come up with an innovative solution to the housing crisis and the isolation of the elderly: the young and old living together.
The Humanitas care home in Deventer, Netherlands, are offering students free accommodation in return for 30 hours a month spent with their older neighbours. Designated as "good neighbours", the students spend time chatting with their new friends. "It's just like a high school" says Jurrien Mentik, as he discusses his newest girlfriend with Joke van Beek, an older resident of the home. Joke speaks about the time Jurien taught her how to play beer pong. "I think that the students influence the whole tone of the conversation here", CEO Gea Sijpkes explains on the thinking behind her idea. One of the harsh realities for the students is that they lose some of their friends along the way. But Jurien sees it differently: "it's a nice feeling to help them find their final moments of happiness".

I live in Utrecht, didn't know that this place existed! serious respect for the students that devote their time to these people. I am definitely considering signing up for a program like this as well.

Take care of your loved ones, no matter their age or even if you share blood. Age does not change the need for kindness and love. For those who live in assisted living however, this is a beautiful place to be. What a wonderful idea.

This is a great idea! Nothing is going to be perfect but this is close to it. Both the old and the young learn from each other. :)

Sounds perfect to me. I always felt that before and after the children are grown, people were meant to live in community. This is half of a perfect solution.

A nice story in these fucked up times! Also a shame no facility like this exists in America. They are too greedy there and don't understand humanity and passion!
