Thank you AS ALWAYS for being an outstanding voice on Nikon news, products, and happenings. Love your channel!
With that said, Nikon really bent a lot of people out of shape with their bloated expectations on the Z6/7ii's. I specifically waited to buy into mirrorless thinking the Gen 2's would have more refinement and capabilities. So I used my faithful brace of D750's for another 2 years and dove in deep when the ii's came out [buying two Z6ii's]. I then bought an original Z6 a year later just before the firmware upgrade that leveled the playing field between the variants... yeah... in hindsight I would have been better off buying in earlier and gaining the experience in mirrorless with a pair of original Z6's and skipped the whole "ii" drama party. I really doubt they have fully eeked out every capability of the duel processors --nor will they, more likely they shelved the whole program and focused up on the Z9, Z8, and Expeed 7 projects early on. The alleged Z6iii is going to have to be pretty special [and priced right] for me to jump in again based solely on Nikon's hype, as a rebadged Zf has zero attraction for me.
Keep up the great work Matt, always look forward to your perspective on things!

    some interesting thought:
z8/9 have a 46 megapixel sensor and performs great with the expeed 7 processor.
now imagine how fast an expeed 7 is with only 24 megapixel.
yes, the z6-iii will not have a stacked sensor, because that would be too expensive. that means the readout is probably slower compared to the Z8/9. but with lower megapixels in the area of 24, it will be fast regarding image processing.
and my gut tells me - as i said many times - they will probably have implemented their new pixel-by-pixel dual dynamic range tech, which is brilliant.
i red this patent when it came out - maybe two years ago? and i will explain it again:
every cmos sensor pixel has a small capacitor connected to it. usually this is fixed and cannot be changed. if they use a small capacitor, the voltage level rises fast in low light situations with every light particle that comes in. you get high voltages in low light situations and high voltages means a high signal to noise ratio ==> low noise in low light situations.
however, a sensor needs to work in high light situations as well. if the exposure time is too long, the small capacitor reaches the maximum voltage that the ADC can handle and the high lights get blown out (over saturated).
that means they need to use a bigger capacitor instead to prevent that. so, they have to use a capacitor size that is a compromise between low light noise performance and high light dynamic range. and with the exposure time they try to find the right time window to capture low light and high lights as good as possible, which also lies in the hand of the photographer as well.
so much to the technical basics.
what nikon did - being explained in that new patent - is brilliant. they have a small switch on every single pixel that can add an additional capacitor. that means in situations where you have very dark areas in the frame you use the small capacitor and when you have very bright parts in the frame, the system switches a bigger capacitor to the sensor pixel and adds a few bit more dynamic range to that.
it is brilliant because now every pixel in the frame can be optimized IN REALTIME for its optimal purpose, high or low light. this will give us superior low noise and dynamic range at the same time!!! i suspect that the Z6-III will have this new tech and it will be the new benchmark in the whole industry. and it is the reason why the Z6-III is late compared to the Zf.

I haven't really paid attention to the latest news in the last week. I've been busy getting ready for the eclipse. I love the new firmware update for the z8. It's like a brand new camera. It's like getting a version 2 of the z8. I watched the video Steve Perry put out and I changed to that in my camera. It works for sports as well as for birds. I went to a local college baseball game just to try out my camera. I got a lot of good shots with it. It was my first baseball game to shoot. I've never had a lot of great pictures of birds or other animals and I've gotten many since I got the 180-600mm lens and the z8. It's a great combo.

On Sony: As Peter Coulson said, "it just makes Sony into a better photocopier."
On a 200mb sensor: You would need a mainframe to process the files. Model and advertising agencies now have a 30mb limit on file sizes, so what's the point? Apart from autofocus, sensors have not improved much in the past 3 years. Bigger is not better. Its why Peter went from a 60mb and 100mb Hasselblad to a 24mp Leica SL2-s. It's the nature and quality of the files produced that matters. Fashion designers want to see their garments displayed in a gorgeous way, and thats all to do with lenses and sensors that render colour and contrast beautifully. Most of these are not in mirrorless cameras.

Good video Matt. It would be nice if they could tweak the Z6 II a bit more for video AF, for me I loved that camera and that area was where I had the most issues with the camera. While I did pickup a FX30, I held on to the Z6 II for photo use, until the A7R V. I'll add that on the US site, the Zf slots between the Z6 II and Z7. This placement puts it above the Z6 II based sensor on technology, which is a better fit as it exceeds the Z6 II in tech.

However, as a former development manager for a large company software development team, I have to take exception with your comment on software update defects - " that's the way it goes sometimes".
Yes, developers would love that comment, however, my test team would not. Customers should NOT accept that.
A defect in software getting to the field shows either a lack of discipline in the dev team process OR a weakness in the test suite run against the update. Either should be unacceptable from a customer expectation that, new SW should work.
Manufacturers are always in a rush to get out the latest updates. I appreciate that.

On the discussion about the Z6II/Z7II firmware updates, I agree that both cameras basically have the features they'll ever have.
The position of the Zf on the Nikon website is probably to put the two 'retro' cameras together, separate from the 'standard' cameras. The Zf released at the exact same price that the Z6 and Z6II release prices, $2000 [all USD prices], while the Z5 was 30% less at $1400 USD. The Z6III may go as high as $2500, the same as the Sony A7IV. giving it some differentiation from the Zf, but a Z5II will have to stay closer to $1500. Nikon released the Z8 at $4000, and quickly realized they had priced it just a little too high since the Sony A7RV and Canon R5 both released at $3900, so they offered $300 discounts within six months. Hopefully they avoid the same mistake with the Z6III and price it higher than the A7IV and R6II, both released at $2500.

Z8, Z9 and Zf will definitely get a few more updates, obviously. Z6ii and Z7ii are definitely in the end of life period so it is good that they still get updates, even if they are only bug fixes. One question that remains to me is how different the Z6iii will be from the Zf. My reasoning behind that is the cost. If it really will have significant improvements over the Zf, it must be more expensive. And then it already comes very close in price to the Z8. Price wise it thus will be close to the Zf, probably…

As a Sony user I have to disagree with you about one thing: The most exciting thing about the firmware update is the fact that Sony released a firmware update for older camera bodies. In my opinion, this was Sony's main weakness for a long time. But yes, the ability to tell real photographs and AI creations apart is gonna be very important and I'm excited about it. Also, I think that the Alpha camera for the Olympics already exists and it's called A9 III 🙂 But I'm excited to see what happens in the Nikon camp as well 🙂

Seems like the Z7 line might be done for. With the benefit of hindsight, the Z7ii seems like a tourniquet to stop the bleeding because the Z7 was such a poor showing and the Z8/Z9 took so long to be ready. The lack of rumors and lack of updates to what was not that long ago their top-specced camera line tells me they probably don't see it as part of their strategic plan going forward. Can't say I blame them, it's hard to say who Z7iii would be for when the Z8 is so compelling at it's price point. If I were in charge and were contemplating a third-incarnation of the Z7, I think it would be a high-resolution camera focused on maximum stills quality with every tradeoff made in the direction of image quality instead of speed or video; basically, the ultimate landscape camera packing a big punch in a small package. Is there a sensor out there that fits that bill? And would that be too small of a niche to be worth pursuing?

Matt no matter how we slice it, (and I shoot Nikon and Love Nikon) the Z6ii isn't anywhere near acceptable. I tell you why. The Expeed 6 was in the D6 (the last flagship ever made at Nikon - I'm referring to the DSLRs line). And it was working GREAT on that camera! AF improved if compared to the D5 which already had a great AF for a reflex. In the Z6ii we have not one but TWO chips. And the camera is still 'half baked'. I believe that it's more an issue of the software that is unstable and unreliable rather than anything else. The fact is that Nikon has waited too long to fix the AF (which is now working better with most situations except wildlife where is a total flop!) and now is way too late to give us a major update or Nikon will cannibalise the new Z6 iii and Z7 iii. I Love Nikon and Nikon's quality, but ethically speaking? This doesn't fly, Matt. Releasing a camera half baked is not on but can happen, (see the Z9 at launch) but then you need to fix it like Nikon did with the Z9 but not with the Z6. Our money weren't in need of any upgrade... they were good at purchase.

It is possible that the Z6II cannot be upgraded with new AF features. Let's assume that's the case - I have my doubts - but let's assume that it can't be improved.
There are plenty of things that don't need more processing power, just a little work and care for the users who bought this generation of cameras. For example: improve the DISP button options, develop custom controls for recording and playback modes, improve button customisation options (now only the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons can select a full list of options), allow to switch quickly between two different focusing configurations (now we only have the Full AF-> tracking mode option)... just to name a few. Anyway, you don't need an Expeed 7 to do this.
Personally I'm going to buy the Z6 III, I think it'll be great, but I'm left with a somewhat bittersweet taste at the way the updates to this generation of cameras have been handled.

Dice you are over reacting. Say what you like as long as it is the truth, but I often think what you say is exaggerated and incorrect. That statement above about the D6 and the Z6 II is incorrect, I explain below why. We all have our point of view, and if you want to offer your view then start a channel, but if I think what you are saying is not accurate I will call you on it. Thing is, like a lot of channels, I don't create fake drama. OMG 'fail fail fail'. I say negative things, you just don't hear them, because I don't cue the 'thunder and lightning' before hand.
Enrico, D6 is not a mirrorless camera. What that means is it has its own dedicated focus unit which is completely different subsystem off sensor (it has nothing to do with the image sensor), To repeat, a D6 focus is not derived from the sensor.
All mirrorless cameras focus is derived 100% from the sensor. Which is a completely different ball game. This includes the Z6 II. I respectfully suggest you take some time to understand how DSLR achieves focus VS how mirrorless achieves focus.
By the time we got to the D6 Nikon had had over 20 years to refine how they do DSLR focus.
By the time we get to the Z6 II Nikon had mirrorless 35mm cameras out for 2 years.
Nikon mirrorless AF was not as mature as the DSLR focus for sure, by a margin of almost 20 years.
'Ethically speaking', I ask this as a point of logic ... what did Nikon promise, that did not appear? Please provide URL's so we can all take a look. :)

      @enricomarconi8358 Před 3 měsíci

@@MattIrwinPhotography Matt, am I overreacting? OK let's take a look at Nikon's mirrorless camera. You say 2 years I beg to differ. The first mirrorless camera Nikon put out was in 2011 and it was the Nikon J1 and then called the V1. The Z6ii was released in October 2020. In my house that's 9 years later not 2. If you consider that, and correct me if I make a mistake here, a mirrorless camera isn't developed overnight but it takes months (if not years), this places Nikon in the game long before 2011. All I am saying is that, strictly looking at evidence (or facts - as you cannot dispute that there were firmware updates on all platforms) we have the following: we had a Z6 and then Z6ii that initially didn't show much reliability with the AF (eye-af being the main issue but not only). Subsequently these issues were addressed and I'd say, resolved. Today when I shoot my z6ii with the eye-AF I'd say that I get well over 90% of my shots in focus - I'm happy here - no drama. Then I look at the Z9 and the camera was totally different at launch from what we have now. Now we have a powerhouse (at the beginning it was not where the camera is today). Am I being unfair still? or you'd agree that Z8 and Z9 are wonderful cameras? Yes? Conclusion and critical thinking: with 2 (not one but TWO) processors, the Z6ii was capable of improving AF performance when it boils down to eye-AF and even subject tracking (which improved, no drama here either). Having said this, I still think that these two processors could deliver more, and, at this point, it's a matter of 'wanting' to do so, or not wanting to address these issues. Clearly there are cameras coming our way Z6iii and I'm sure with the expeed 7 and a proper software running the camera, it will be an amazing 24MP experience. But fixing the Z6ii could mean cannibalising the Z6iii sale, even a child can see that Matt. So that upgrade, might not come ever. I have full understanding as to the difference between DSLRs' autofocus and mirrorless, and, by enlarge, the Z7ii was better than the D6 in live view - so no drama there either. Why can't I focus with a fine point on AF-C when in the same camera is available with AF-S? Or why isn't there any bird AF to date? Asking question and thinking critically, I know, it's a crime these days.. No one is trashing Nikon, Matt, as I shoot it (and I left Canon for it and I stand to my decision as I LOVE Nikon's quality), I'm only saying that listening a bit more to us, wouldn't hurt. After all, we're Nikon's lifeline, are we not?

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  Před 3 měsíci

I stated 35mm mirrorless, not mirrorless. Yes I bought the V1 in 2012, and I still have it.
      www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/NIKONV1/NIKONV1PREVIEW.HTM
V1 was based on the Expeed 3 platform, it is highly probable the architecture from Expeed 3 (for later models I believe they move to Expeed 4) could not simply be transferred to Expeed 6, and may have required a complete re-write from the ground up.
A quote at the time of launch
'Processor. Nikon couples its new CX-format imager with a new generation of its EXPEED image processing engine. The Nikon V1 features a dual-core EXPEED 3 processor, which is said to have been optimized for noise performance, speed (in terms of general operation, burst rate, and focusing), as well as battery life.'
Maybe you did not watch this video ... I said maybe there is more, 4,5, 10-20% more they could squeeze out of it and maybe Nikon decided not to do it.
As for thinking critically, critical thinking includes all sorts of aspects, not just the technology. Thinking like the market, the differences in sensor, differences in CPU architecture, differences in how each processors achieves it desired outcomes, what other tech their engineers are working on, and as I say in this video specifically, effort vs reward, where will Nikons resources be most successful, for what they decide is the greater outcome (and only they know that, not you or I). All I am trying to do with these videos is work out what might be happening and share it, I actually don't have a strong opinion either way personally on what should or should not happen with the Z6 II and Z7 II.
The reason I don't have a strong opinion is I have been buying cameras for 35+ years, and I never expected them to get better after I bought them. The idea of firmware improvements adding features and upgrades, for me, has only really been concreted in the Nikon space since Expeed 7. Prior to Expeed 7, I think the updates where we saw the most improvement, which was the Z6 and Z7 was due to them getting the hardware to market ASAP, then continuing to refine the first generation of Expeed 6 mirrorless cameras on the fly once in market. Alot of the improvements to Z6 where then already in Z6 II. Two processors do not mean 2x speed. There is always overhead losses when having to farm code off to another processor.
If I think critically it is this. I was here in this space watching it closely when Z6 shipped, also when Z6 II shipped. I currently own 2x Z6 and 1x Z6 II. I understand these cameras first hand. ( Do you own anything expeed 7?)
Regarding the advances in the Z9 vs the advances in the Z6 (II) AF, we know for a fact Expeed 7 is 10 times faster that Expeed 6 x 2 in the Z7 II.
This fact alone shows us the Expeed 7 can absolutely run circles around Expeed 6.
The moment I first held an Expeed 7 camera I could tell it was on another planet speed wise compared to Expeed 6. And this was not just AF, this was everything, EVF, IBIS, menus, just general handling.
My best guess is that the AF system on the Expeed 6 is not only 10x slower, but it actually see the world differently.
A lot of noise was made about the Z9 having machine learning AF algorithms to allow it to see planes, birds, people, cars etc.
This is something which was never mentioned regarding the Expeed 6.
Thus I do not believe any expeed 6 cameras uses or can use this technology, which is clearly better at seeing everything than how the old way works. And perhaps it is not only better at seeing many different things, but also much faster.
The differences between Expeed 6 and Expeed 7 and I think are far more than just speed, it is acrchitecture, cores, and actually the programming approach to solving the problem at hand.
Expeed 6 feels like the old way, and Expeed 7 is definitely the new way, which all camera companies are now pursuing. It is a profound generation difference, which is more than just speed. This is personally what I think is going on.
If you own a 4G phone, does not matter what software you write, you can never connect to a 5G network, that hardware is simply not there.
I genuinely and deeply believe there is a chasm of technological difference between Expeed 6 and 7, which is far more than simply speed.

I wish they could add in the better autofocus system (what the Z8 and Z9 have) to the Z6 and Z6ii. I'm pretty sure the Z6iii will have it.

@@MattIrwinPhotographyI know that Expeed 7 features cannot be added. That's obvious. But at least, they could add simple suggested features from the community (Nikon Rumors had one list) which would make it different from the z6. The way it is now, I consider it a scam they created for selling more.
