I've been testing subs, especially German subs, extensively & playing them exclusively since they came out.
4 golden rules rules never change with submarines:
1. Always seek open waters so you don't get surprised & have room to maneuver freely.
2. Try never to get spotted, diving once too often is better than the other way around.
3. Never forget that your speed is relatively bad, so if you advance too far, there may be no escape.
4. Don't linger under water for longer than necessary as you're slow, blind & it's limited in time.
As for tactics & dealing with different targets:
- Your main target are Battleships, especially those with an unattentive captain, you can even sneak up on them & mess up their day by torping from close range without pinging.
- Don't get involved in destroyer fights, you can't really hit DDs & they'll swarm you.
- Keep anything with sonar & radar (Cruisers, German DDs & higher German BBs) at a safe distance.
- Trying to kill the enemy sub yourself is not ideal since you're just as vulnerable. Better to support your team in killing them by spotting & forcing him to dive.
- Sneaking through enemy lines is only recommended if there is no carrier in play.
- When engaging a carrier, remember that you're the one type of vessel he can easily defend himself against. (Using depth charge bombers)
Pro-tip: Subs currently don't lose much speed at all on periscope depth so that it's optimal for getting a good mix of range & stealth when trying to sneak through enemy lines.

Not sure if this will get though. I've tried subs, they are difficult. Sure you can hide, until your detected, then your worse than a glass cannon, since your cannons in this case have no bite. I have found the Cruisers at higher tiers are better over-all. Cruisers beat DD's in everything but spotting, more guns, more torps, more health and equal speed, acceleration etc.
With Subs stealth is your game, yet your ability to destroy is very limited. Unguided torps turns a sub into a Destroyer, that can't smoke and has limited speed. Did they get rid of the Panic mechanic? Where you lost Battery quicker because someone spotted you? Basically a death sentence. I see many comments saying: Subs are OP.. yet I don't think they have tried to play one
That is still a thing I talked about it in the vid where if your spotted underwater you loss battery quicker

@@OverLordBou The only hope in that situation was to submerge to max depth and try and get out of the kill zone, even that is a gamble as your subs speed is 12Kts and your battery is depleting faster than normal. At that stage I'm typically dead. I haven't seen any other machinic in the game for other ships, seems like it's a punishment for being a Sub, doing Sub things. At max depth we can't target or know what's above and with the Minimum detection range of 2Kms, I'm not sure how others think Subs are OPd.

I just want to clarify for people coming to this video.
You guys said that sub torpedoes have a low flooding chance. I think you meant homing torpedoed. As the alternate torpedoes (at least for US) have a really high flooding chance at 82%

Although you clearly describe how each boat plays, I disagree with your set ups for Capt skills and Upgrades. I did find that the Extended Repair works very well for both classes. Perhaps it is play style but I am enjoying them quite well. I have had sub sub kills and Sub DD kills and wells as other classes of surface ships. My HP is average 30 to 90 K Thanks!

Downloading the game right now - I wasn't sure I was interested (some of the Steam reviews are pretty rough when it comes to the community and the monetization issues) but I'm just so intrigued by the idea of a submarine game and the ability to be relatively stealthy and such. Is it normal for people to main subs? Thanks for the video, it's my introduction to the game and something I'll probably be referring back to a lot as I learn to play.
You will be hated for maining a sub. A lot of people do not like how subs and carriers are in the game. There are balance issues.
All I want to know which is no where online is
1. How to counter aerial depth charges
2. How to dodge other submarine torpedoes
changing depth while drifting can and going as fast as possbile in the way you think he is going ot predict where you are going
I have no clue how to lock on to other subs...my sonar pings always miss them

I play a German Type VII at the moment and I play quite differently. I stay near my friendly ships so the enemy is visually focused on them because I don't stay on the top. Instead, I dive shortly after spotting my enemy, before they can spot me. Then I angle my boat off to one side at a 45 degree angle so when they are under 5 km, I'm turned and firing my torpedoes where they are going to be, just as if I were in my destroyer without acoustic torpedoes. I give the torps a little run time and ping the ship when I'm guessing the torps are about 2 km out. This puts the enemy roughly broadside to me, and the ping helps me guide the torps on that last leg as enemy ships try to evade or wipe away the tracking ping. I just try to angle in a manner I won't have friendly ships in the way to hit, or block my torpedoes.
- as the guy said last year - avoid getting close to land or you'll have nowhere to turn and it will be like shooting fish in a barrel (pun intended).
- maximize your dive capacity, and don't be afraid to stay under and burn consumables to stay under longer to get a good shot, or sit on the bottom and hide.
- If your batteries are about to die and you need to stay under, dive to maximum depth so your sub will take longer to be forced to the surface and give you more time to evade and possibly fire more torpedoes as you ascend to hit your pursuer, or kill them.
- remember, you can easily see a ship from underwater and where they are going, fire your torpedoes, just to come to the surface and realize there's an island between your torpedoes and your target. Be aware of where land masses are so you don't waste reload time on torpedoes, as well as give your position away.

I'm not sure why you say the US are built to stay back and the German are more aggressive.
The US gets a bit more rage on the alternative torpedoes but the German can stay much further back with their homing. At the same time it's far more advantages for the German to hold back if you suspect the enemy sub to be on your side of the map as you detect targets 3km further away.

@@OverLordBou I figured it was something like that. I don't run them too much and was mostly trying to figure out how to play them so I could better play against them.
Some places mention their torps can citadel has that been changed? If they can what is required to do so. Some times people mention there are skills needed other times just that you need a double ping.

good comments and well balanced, I read on the wow forum about a guy that wanted to bring in sonar buoys as well as if they didnt have enough to kill subs already that basically only have torps as a weapon with the least armour and protection and this was written by a guy that never played subs and was a bb player, typical.. I personally struggle with game play of the us subs due to lack of air compared to german subs but its all in the play style and i have yet to learn to properly play us subs from the back when i am a dd player at heart. but love subs in the game. I have a situation where i ping ships and i never get a green ping on the second ping in the same place so reduced to using dumbfire all the time. Not sure of the reason if its lag or not but its a PITA ! I think that us subs should have the mechanic to stop air being used for 30 seconds like the german subs have. The us subs have less air and the germans have more yet they can hold their air in reserve with that mechanic. i feel thats a bit unfair.

In Silent Hunter when spotted by a DD i often opted for an attack run on the DD with a bow shot.

How I play submarine: Keep fire torpedos to ships and if I see a enemy subs. I crash into them cuz I know I can’t hit them with torpedoes for sure

I don't really understand know how you get submarines. i received them today in port for rental. What missions do i need to do as the reward for combat missions don't state anything about renting subs.

Will someone let me know how you hit another submerged submarine with torpedoes while submerged? I ping them and fire torpedoes but none seem to track them while submerged but I always get hit by opposing submerged submarines. What am I missing? I playing with the Salmon sub.
Are your pings hitting the subs? As with surface ships, Damage Control Party will clear the torpedo lock. Also, it's pretty easy to dodge the homing torps by juking left, right, up, down.
being a new player and trying out battleships, playing against subs is so frustrating. They can spam torpedoes out of detection and stay out of range of depth charges, and sometimes there literally is nothing i can do other than decide to go to a different spot at the start of the game. there is no hydrosearch at tier 5 and i am just left seeing the pings and sending depth charges way too close to my ship. And i also cannot hit it with shells, the ultimate turture of being peeled away by a sub...
It is painful for sure
just wait till you get into the bigger battleships. subs dont really hang around bigger battleships, but destroyers will hint you and launch 30 to 40 torps at you in one go and you will not see that volley untill its right on you

Combat missions. Fulfil them and you get the US Cachalot and the German U-68, both premiums, for 21 days.
I just got them yesterday and they were haaard to play with.

@@matura93 Go to Combat Missions, check each mission and look for the rewards specifically. They would contain 21 days for a VI Cachalot, and a VI U-68. You'll be able to see the conditions and what to fulfill.
From what I know, you have to complete prerequisite missions first in order to fulfill the conditions to get those two subs.

Appreciate the video man. I have to say though, I played a bit over the weekend and basically every tier X game had 3-4 DDs and 2 subs in it. Although I'm a good enough player that I could, like, deal with it, it really robbed a lot of the fun for me. I realize they're not going to devote so much energy to developing these things without ever putting them in the game but I expect if it keeps going like this, I'll end up losing interest.
I guess we'll see if the server population changes once subs are ubiquitous.

When I have to worry about burning a Superheal to break sub lock in my Nelson I know I am dealing with next level game design. And when they have to buff survivability and nerf all forms of damage taken then you know that round peg belongs in that square hole.

Your video clearly shows and explains (thankyou) why the introduction of submarines is poorly designed and thought out. Again a class is being introduced into the game to primarily target slow and large ships (BattleShips and Battle Cruisers) both of which have no defenses but for a stand off airstrike. The thought of using DCP as the only defence against a double ping and homing torps! Dumb Just like support carriers with Stun bombs.
they made it already clear stun bombs were not being done they discontinued the idea and dcp isnt the only defense you are able to kite and turn and slow down right as the torps stop tracking and if you were paying attention in the video i explained how if subs try to use the homing torps they are more easily deteced and able to be found and airstriked by watching where the pings come from. your arguement is more solid if you were to bring up the dumbfire torps since you dont need homing for those but you seem to be hard focused on the homing mechanic. So i will focus that on this reply the homing distance for the torps only will home so close before going in the direction they were going BBs have the furthest distance which makes it easier for them to potentially dodge the incoming torps cruisers and DDs have a harder time dodging the torps since the torps will home in closer to them subs have the closest homing subs pretty much will be homed until impact or they miss. CVs are little less than BBs. I do agreee that subs in the current game is not a good idea but at this point they are going to be in the game no matter what so i am trying to put out as accurate as info i can on them so people are able to counter them and or play them correctly.
CVs seem to be immune to pings as if they are not OP already. To make subs a playable class they need to have more realistic dive time, ie. be able to be submerged for a whole game, not 4 minutes. Otherwise, in a game with a cv, you are normally continually spotted. Also get rid of totally unrealistic airstrike and BBs only defence should be convoy cruisers and dds.
If they are submerged the whole game they will need to get higher speed underwater, which then illuminates the point of diving out
I hate CVs as a sub man
CVs aren't immune to pings. Their automatic DCP pops when you first ping them. Normal CV damage control runs for about two minutes. Afterward you can ping them. What you should do is use the dumb torps and shoot the CV. If you really want to use homing then ping thr CV then use dumb torps until the status that their damage control party goes away.

i unlocked them via missions. I was so exited to play sub but man these things are terrible. even if you do a master A+++ play you cannot be top player. u just dont have the damage. Compared to my japanese dd these are absolute crap. Maybe they nerfed subs to oblivion. Subs have 4 torpedos at total for 8.5 k dmg each and lower speed with no smoke screen. DDs have 12-18 torpedos for 18k dmg each. Just make the numbers. There is no way to kill a battleship with sub. DDs are just immune to torpedos. and cruisers are just to agile and the other guy must be either drunk either brain dead to score a hit. yes u can dive but if you dive you are dead. Battleships will send anti sub planes (and they will win 1vs 1 if they know what to do.) dds and cruisers will just rollover you with anti sub mines. ofc they spot you with sonars while u sit there with 12knots max speed.
I would like to see a video about how to operate a sub. How do you make it submerge? How do you make it come up? I've watched every video on subs and have not found a single one that shows how to ping, submerge, suface... This and the others just tend to want to show off the creaters skill.
when you first play subs it gives you this info so most creators dont usually feel the need to explain such a simple mechanic but it is F to go up and C to go down
Well, I would certainly appreciate someone pointing me toward one of these sites. There's nothing on Wows game, and every CZcams seach comes up with "begingers guide" but every one that I have found does not cover the very basics. Thanks for your help in this.

If WoWs wants to make subs so difficult to obtain and use; there are very good submarine simulators and games to play other than WoWs… they should introduce them as they would any other vessel and adjust from there… in any historical battles they had their advantages and disadvantages and will require skill to even survive… that’s the fun of it…

My guy this is kind of how submarines work(ed) in in real life. They're kind of meant to be able to do tons of damage without being seen.
@@APerson-bn6cu not really, submarines were, if anything, very easy to detect in real life. they could only fire dumb torpedoes (until germany developed homing torpedoes later, which were very easy to fool with decoys) and missed a lot. escort ship hydrophones were very effective at finding subs and depth charges would destroy them. unlike in game, it took VERY long for a surfaced sub to go underwater, anywhere from 20 - 45 seconds. imagine being spotted by a destroyer coming straight at you with double your speed while the best you can do is hope they miss while counting to 30, only to START submerging. not to mention they didnt have health-bars, any hole anywhere means very big trouble as it will start to leak water at a dangerous speed. and since every piece of equipment is placed so tightly together, god help you if something important like the engine gets hit.

@@josephhuggins5394 depends on the time of the war in rhe beggining german submarines wrecked havoc on allied shiping as war progressed allies got better at destroying them.
