I do have a lily in my 55 gallon planted aquarium with large regular-sized fancy goldfish. I have a LOT of Anubias plants in the 55 gallon too.

The only thing goldfish absolutely need inside the aquarium with them is other goldfish for company, only because they are very social fish. The decorations are just for us to enjoy and are definitely optional in my opinion. I have anubis plants and driftwood, my father has a completely bare goldfish aquarium and both are thriving. I have always felt that if your aquarium is working for you don't mess with it! Your aquarium your business!

I always keep the tiny variety of duckweed in with my goldfish and they eat that when hungry and leave the other plant alone. I grow lots of plants with my goldfish. You can grow duckweed in containers in your garden and put as needed into the aquariums and/or ponds.

I would love to do this! Only thing I'm worried about is it blocking my weirs to the filter as it skims off the surface

I agree Chris that you need to be very careful what decor you put in with your goldfish. If my orandas can get stuck behind a pot or an ornament then you can bet that they will do it. I found a floating plant in my local canal and duckweed ftom a woodland pond , so I've popped both of them in with the goldfish. I bought a marsh marigold and a water lilly. So I just need to wait and see what happens. 😊

Like you said, you can’t make everyone happy! Only you know what’s best for your goldfish and their tank 🧡 They’re clearly well cared for!

Love the channel!! But putting one plant in a tank with so many jumbo fish, isn’t going to prove one way or the other whether plants can be kept with goldies - jumbo or not! It’s like sticking one bag of crisps in a room full of blokes and then being surprised when they eat the crisps! Hungry or not, bored or not, they’re going to eat the crisps! A fairer test would be to properly stock the tank with a variety of plants that can share the load of curious nibbling by so many big, inquisitive goldies.
I get what you’re trying to prove, but this is kinda doomed from the start with just the one plant in there, and all this is going to do is put newbie hobbyists (that may have liked to try plants) off giving them a go. For transparency, I have a tank full of a variety of 12+ plants with three very curious goldies who do rip the plants to pieces - but this hasn’t stopped the plants from outgrowing the damage, and the plants are great for my nitrates.
You’re such a great channel, and popular with newbies, I do worry that this ‘test’ with the lily will unduly put newbies off, when live plants can be great for BOTH the fish and the water quality. By being so negative toward live plants, you might inadvertently push viewers who want aquascaped tanks toward scratchy, nasty fake plastic plants.
Having said all this, keep up your amazing channel! ❤️

Sorry! I'm not sure I delivered my aims properly with the lilly in the tank. Its not really an experiment, so to say. I know the fish will destroy it, but I wanted to give it a second try. I don't want to waste money on buying plants that will need planting into substrate as I know these will be ripped up constantly. I'm definitely a plant advocate, if you check out the rate my tank series playlist, where I praise the many planted tanks with goldies. I really try to keep an open mind on the channel and I would never tell someone that they can't keep goldfish one way or another. My preference is a bare/empty system and the lilly is purely for aesthetics and a last try, I'm sure if I had 4/5 pots, it would have had much more success. Thank you for the comment, and thanks for watching! Really appreciate it 🙏🏼
