    22:50 The MU-2 does not have ailerons because they needed full span flaps to bring landing speeds down. Instead, it has upper surface spoilers.

    Another FS product I have purchased after watching one of your videos.
    I love this little airplane. Easy to fly. Like you I did have very fast and sudden taxi speeds.
    This aircraft seems to come with its own voice pack. However, it just seems to be the pilot’s voice. No ATC or AI aircraft heard.
    You are by far my favourite FS CZcamsr. You don’t act an like over-excited 5-year-old like so many seem to do. You talk calmly, clearly and you are very informative.
    Keep up the good work 👍

    The MU-2 uses Garret TPE331 engines which are "fixed shaft", meaning that the prop is geared to the gas generator, unlike PT6 engines which are "free turbine". Garret does not recommend reducing the prop speed (condition lever) to less than 95%. Hence these engines are noisy because of the high prop tip mach number.

    It doesn't have ailerons. It has roll spoilers much like the B-52. You are correct it is too quiet, the TPE-331 engines are loud as hell but they do have a distinct sound to them that this model just doesn't capture very well. Also wish you would have picked another livery than the all white so we could see what the texturing is like on the exterior.

    Excellent video! The ailerons on the MU-2 are called spoilerons. Incidentally, the Cessna Caravan has ailerons which are augmented by small spoilerons as well. I've spoken with pilots who have flown the MU-2 and they say you have to fly it like a jet since it's not very forgiving. Most of my experience is flying King Airs which is a very forgiving aircraft. The view from the cockpit in the MU-2 simulator is pretty accurate since your feet are only about 12 inches from the ground, the modeling is outstanding.

Buying as soon as I get home! These are powered by Garrets not P&Ws so you'd expect them to sound a bit different,, I'd have to watch some cockpit video to comment further than that.

    • @normg2242
      @normg2242 Před 9 měsíci +1

      I hear it can be very tricky to fly if you're not used to it. I'm just wondering - with the spoiler arrangement for banking, I would assume that it would be impossible to aileron-roll this plane , no? The reason why I ask is that the msfs one rolls beautifully, as if it had ailerons. I guess that would be an inaccuracy...

    • @jmflyer55
      @jmflyer55 Před 8 měsíci

      @@normg2242 …. We’ll let me say this. MSFS is not real life. Any “plane” can be rolled in MSFS if memory serves. I haven’t played it in 20 years! Very few aircraft are approved for aerobatics in real world flying. And you’d have to be an idiot to try to roll this aircraft in real life.
      This plane is a handful for sure. I flew one regularly for a while, we nicknamed it “The screaming Demon”. It’s an incredibly slick aircraft and can be a real handful to get slowed down. Especially when some incompetent air traffic controller is busy with his feet up drinking his coffee in a nice comfortable office, when he postpones your descent clearance till the last minute and you’re trying to get down through bad weather, knocked all over the place, single pilot IFR, and all this plane wants to do is pick up speed, because real world flying, unlike a sim or MSFS on a computer, you can’t just pull the power all the way back in real life. You’ll supercool the engines and cause damage etc.. So you’ve got to carry power.
      That being said, a common route I flew it was Boston to St Louis, and on many occasion had to pass through squall lines as they’re very common coming from west to east on that route.
      But all in all it’s a good fast aircraft. You just have to stay on your toes or it will get away from you. 👍

  • @avi8r66
    @avi8r66 Před 9 měsíci +2

    Already bought it. I do see I will need to remap my controls since what I use for reverse pitch shut the engines down.... not fun. But, it is fast, fun, and performed as hoped. It's not as loud from the front as it should be though, in person this thing screams even while idling along as it taxis. It's louder than anything else on the tarmac at a typical airfield.

  • @ddsdss256
    @ddsdss256 Před 9 měsíci +2

    Thanks. So apparently they only model the early MU-2/Solitare and not the (slightly slower) long fuselage/Marquise. Still a nice a/c and I always thought that the MU-2 was a "cool" airplane, with a very advanced design considering it's mid-'50s origin and 1963 first flight. Wow, that's a really old panel, sans the more angular "kinked" leather-trimmed glareshield seen on later models. The wear-and-tear really emphasizes how old this thing is! I learned on steam gauges and it's good practice to navigate sans GPS (especially IFR), but although you can view sectionals, approach plates, etc. on another screen, plotters and pencils are hard to use in that context!
    I can't recall if you set t/o trim, but that may have had something to do with its reluctance to rotate. The MU-2 has a reputation as being dangerous, but that's more due to pilot error than any other cause. This is not as easy a plane to fly as the sim indicates and it will bite you if you're not careful. I'd never use bank angles like that IRL, especially in landing config. For example, a 60° bank (not passenger-friendly!) increases stall speed by about 40% (load factor) and that's one of the reasons so many stall/spins occur in the pattern. If you stay ahead of the airplane (always good practice), >30° should rarely be required. Bob Hoover may have performed some amazing aerobatics in a Shrike (similar to the Turbo Commander which is itself similar to the MU-2 in many ways), but this is more of a bizjet than a Pitts and needs to be flown that way. I know, it's a sim, but for me that means flying as you would in the real a/c (and of course, there are many other options including the Pitts for things like inverted flight), but hey, people try to land wide-body airliners at St. Barts and Courchevel (but let's see 'em try and take off), so who am I to judge?

    Great review as always but I must admit as beautiful as it looks and yes the sounds seem quite quiet . The main thing I found just like you was the overspeed on taxiing regardless of pitch setting and it seems very reluctant to leave the runway . I would say it needs some work on the Flight model but for the price it's not bad , but it is a mixed bag .

    When I worked on the flight line, the howl of the MU-2 was an unwelcome sound. I heard is close without hearing protection once... once. My hearing was never the same. I had to unplug a ground power cart after starting the engines on another occasion... had to duck under the exhaust to get to the plug. Even with hearing protection, my brain shook so bad I became dizzy and almost passed out. Took an hour feel better.

    Very good video as always. I read this aircraft is one of the most dangerous to fly. Good challenge of sim pilot but less for real passengers...
    Wikipedia:
    As of March 2016, 27.7% of 704 Mitsubishi MU-2s have suffered an accident since the model entered service in 1963, or 195 aircraft involved, the second highest accident rate among aircraft in this category behind the Fairchild Metroliner Merlin (30.2% accidents)2. “More than a quarter of the MU-2s built crashed, making them an example of dangerousness. The ultimate consequence of excessive icing is wing stalling, which can cause the plane to fall almost vertically, sometimes to the point of impact with the ground,”

    I was interested in wether or not you felt the fact that the plane only uses spoilers for roll control (so more drag every time you don't have the yoke centred, and if they got rid of that awful feeling of lack of weight/intertia and springy-ness that seem to have become the standard for a lot of MSFS planes).

    If you set flaps to 40 for takeoff, it’ll fly itself beautifully off the runway. Also, I set the sensitivities for the roll axis to “0” sensitivity and 100 reactivity. 8 for dead zone. I went plus 10 to minimise the amount of yoke turn. The MU 2 has a fairly critical wing and needs to be flown more like a fighter, hence the settings I’ve laid out. I left pitch and yaw as is.
    See what you think.

If I opt for the classic setup I lose audio on the radios and have to restart my computer to get it back. Is anyone else having the same issues? I follow the checklist step by step but the problem seems to be with the inverter. The Garmin goes crazy when it's on and works went it's off. That's not what the documentation says should happen. Like I said - frustrating! I emailed IniBuilds but they have not responded. I hope it's an operator error issue and not a bug. Flying without a transponder doesn't seem right even in a sim.

      I don't always know what people have access to, when they make their videos. All I know is when I go to Steam, and I see an aircraft I might want to buy, Steam does not include the aircrafts stats in the mods description. The aircraft mod might already be an equivalent to an in game one, making the modded one redundant (with respect to game usefulness). I am also using AirHauler 2, hence my curiosity.
      But you are correct, I can look up the aircraft in question, and view it's stats based the manufacturer reports, but that only works if MSFS has recorded the exact same stats. In short I would need to buy the mod, to see what the stats actually are. It may not be the aircraft I'm looking for.
      But this is not to take away from the work he did here in making this video. It remians a very nice job. I was just wondering if he had the stats, to please post.

    The Mu-2 is NOT quiet..!!! lol I've seen them on the flightline. We were in class one day and outside there was a hell of a racket going on, you couldn't hear yourself thinking. It was an Mu2 just outside, idling. Our ground school instructor aptly said that this plane is very efficient at turning fuel into noise...lol

    This thing fly like a brick with wings. It very heavy. Like other heavy planes or jets that has to go fast, it fly better and smother with speed. At lower speeds it does better with the flaps down, like when you're setting up for an approach and landing. The AP sure is different.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Před 8 měsíci

      The local legends are always cheap. The only downside I have seen so far is the sound - every real-world MU2 pilot or engineer I have heard from says the real thing was the loudest prop aircraft they ever saw or worked on :)

    Flew these early in my career for a bank/check company. Cheap and fast... Other than nothing else. Painfully L O U D. A nightmare to fuel and I had to once in a while as linemen despised it. Tips are mains and only 60 gal iirc per side at a time or they will touch the ground. I might? buy this but can MSFS capture the Moo's unique traits " lift killers instead of ailerons, and it's eng out handling which killed some unaware", the ground handling leaning/rocking. A "by the numbers plane".Yet the performance, round gauges, appearance and rarity " military pilots use to swarm it wondering wth it was make it a impulse buy. Going to wait a few patches and I may fly it and give my 2 cents.

    Hrm. Kinda tired of the local legends stuff. I'd rather spend 30, maybe even 50 bucks on an in-depth, feature-rich aircraft that i'll actually want to come back to again and again.
    With these Famous Flyers/Local legends, it always ends the same. You buy it because it's cheap, fly it a couple of times, then once the novelty wears off, there's nothing to keep you coming back. No real systems depth. Nothing to learn and sink your teeth into. No extra features like failures to keep you on your toes.
    Worse yet, with these being pushed out as cheap, casual releases, it actually discourages other developers from releasing study-level versions the same aircraft, because it's hard to compete when someone's already put a 15-euro version out there, no matter how shallow it is. Happened with the Blackbird ATR, remember. It's very unlikely someone's going to do a more complex MU-2 now, which is just sad. Even more sad is that i'm still sort of thinking i might get it, because i love the MU-2 and if i want a chance to fly one in the sim, it's this one or bust. Hrmpf.
    I guess the upside is that it makes Asobo/Microsoft money, which encourages them to keep updating and improving the sim. I just wish the releases weren't so mediocre.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@jonbeckett Yeah, i get that. Speaking purely from my personal point of view, there. But hey, maybe if they released some properly deep, detailed aircraft, some of that majority would be convinced that those sorts of releases are more worthwhile? ;p
