Uriah Heap were a hard working band who seemed to be on an unending tour during the Seventies, I was fortunate to see them several times, both in Festivals and small clubs. They were always astounding live, but never had that pop crossover to propel their career into the next level. Thank you for recognizing this mostly forgotten band who deserve better awareness, this brings back some fabulous memories of head banging goood times. ✌️✌️

They always seemed to be on Midnight Special and my thinking is that they would answer the phone when the show was missing a band or had a drop out because they were often the last act and closed the show.

Uriah Heep is one of the "Big Four" of the major British superstar that made hard rock a force to be reckoned with in the early 70s. The other three were Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Not a bad company to be in, huh ?! Sadly, out of all the members who were in Uriah Heep during their heyday in 1972-79, every one has now passed away - except indefatigable guitarist Mick Box, who keeps the band going to this day. 2023 saw them release their 25th (!) studio album "Chaos & colour", which got a tremendous reception from fans and critics alike, hailed as their finest album in decades. And Bernie Shaw, the Canadian who has fronted Uriah Heep for almost 40 years now, remains one of the most original and emotional singers out there - a perfect fit for the band.
Oh, on "Sympathy" - kind of surprised and a little disappointed that nobody mentioned the bass. The late great Trevor Bolder (of David Bowie fame) was AMAZING - one of my personal all-time favorite players.

Jay & Amber: I've been a Uriah Heep fan since the 70's. A few song suggestions that made me a fan: From their Uriah Heep Live album of 1973: "Gypsy" (my favorite), "Sunrise", "Easy Livin'", "July Morning", "Circle of Hands", "Look at Yourself". And then if you want to hear them dip into a symphonic rock song, listen to "Salisbury" from their Salisbury album. It is 16 minutes of wonderful orchestral/rock mix music. Masterful! Enjoy!

Glad for the uriah heep song. Thank you. Understand this is not the original singer you heard before. David Byron's voice was heep in my opinion. The classic heep line up is the earlier line up. If you want to hear high vocals listen to shadows of grief. It'll blow your mind if not your ear drums. Other great original line up songs include. July morning. Bird of prey. Sunrise. Tears in my eyes. Rain. Circle of hands. Rainbow demon. Look at yourself. Traveler in time.

Back early seventies, in Italy, there was a popular clubs, right by the beach on this very cool spot. In summer it was always packed and with excellent DJs spinning great music. In winter, not much would happen. One late fall I see a poster for Uriah Heep to be playing there, 3 pm in the afternoon next Saturday. I go and the place was basically empty. Only 15-20 of us at most, hanging around in this courtyard, outside the club. The band came, set up their gears and gave us a full blown concert! to the 20 of us! Unbelievable.

Known for their unique blend of progressive rock, hard rock, heavy metal, and pastoral ballads, British rockers Uriah Heep became renowned for their distinctive sound characterized by powerful vocal harmonies, intricate guitar work, and keyboard-driven melodies. The iconic songs from their early to mid '70s peak showcased the band's evocative songwriting and skillful arranging, solidifying Heep's reputation as pioneers of the heavy metal and progressive rock movements. Try "Sunrise," "July Morning," "Traveller in Time" into "Easy Livin," all from Live 1973.

Uriah Heap was underappreciated in the day and largely forgotten today.
There are always some younger people who know the good music of the past. My gf's nephew is 21, and he knows a lot of the music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, although we are still schooling him on the gaps in his knowledge. Frequently heard from him: "How have I never heard of this before?"

As others have stated, this is where vocalist John Lawton and bassist Trevor Boulder joined the group. Original singer David Byron had substance abuse issues which would eventually take his life in the 80s. Alcoholism proved to be his undoing. He was 38 when he passed in 1985. John Lawton sang on three Uriah Heep albums starting with Firefly. By this time the band's fortunes were on the decline though they would have a brief reprieve in the early 80s with the album Abominog and the song, That's The Way That It Is, which got video play on MTV.

Amber & Jay, every time you guys talk about somebody hitting high notes with their vocals. I keep requesting Deep Purple's Child In Time the live version. There's a video from 1971 I believe of them doing this song live.
I've seen many different reactions of people being blown away by this performance & I know it would do the same to you.

Here's another suggestion for a couple of artists that I think you've reacted to before. However, this time they are singing as a duet. "James Taylor & Carole King - You've Got A Friend (BBC In Concert - 11/13/1971)" (channel: James Taylor) --James Taylor and Carole King were very close friends (only) the two never dated, despite the common assumption that they had been romantically involved. King credits Taylor for helping her build confidence to perform live in front of audiences. This specific song I've suggested was written and produced first on Carole King's album called "Tapestry" in 1971; but James Taylor also recorded the song in the same year and released it on his album called "Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizone"

It is a good tune and all versions of this great band are worth listening to, but this album, firefly, is the first after the classic lineup broke up and the great David Byron was replaced by the able John Lawton (I loved his work on the first Lucifer's Friend album but they were at their peak with Byron) but the band sounded a bit different but still interesting 70s rock. Try for some more classic Heep when you can with the early 70s lineup and their awesome Uriah Heep Live, do Gypsy, July Morning and Sunrise, those are their tunes you really need to hear, epics that got a lot of love back in the day. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Great band, for sure. I think they had a couple different singers in the 70s (and more after that). Definitely on the progressive side and a big influence on metal too.
In a somewhat similar vein, maybe try Judas Priest, Beyond the Realms of Death. What a haunting song.
I know you've done quite a bit of Judas Priest, but you haven't done much old school '70s Priest, which is some of their best stuff.
For instance, Dissident Aggressor for something more heavy. Their version of the Joan Baez song Diamonds and Rust is killer as well. As is their version of the Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green) song The Green Manalishi (with the two pronged crown). Or maybe you could introduce Amber to Victim of Changes.
If you do Victim of Changes, or Diamonds and Rust, or Green Manalishi, I'd suggest you do the versions off their live album titled Unleashed in the East, which are IMO are better than the studio versions.
You should do some old school Scorpions too. You've mostly done later ballads, but they did some killer hard rock back in the day. Lovedrive, Loving You Sunday Morning, The Zoo, Falling in Love, In Trance, The Sails of Charon... to name a few.

Great band. They did find a good replacement for David Byron here in John Lawton. I got to see them at Summerfest in Milwaukee in 1979. Some other songs to check out are: July Morning, Traveller In Time, Sunrise, Sweet Lorraine, Sweet Freedom, Seven Stars and Pilgrim.
For a singer who can really belt out the screaming high notes, check out Ian Gillan in Deep Purple doing a live tv performance of Child In Time and doing Gethsemane in the original cast album of Jesus Christ Superstar.

This is one of Uriah Heep's better songs, from the first album featuring John Lawton on vocals and Trevor Bolder on Bass.... Like the previous lineup, four of the five members have passed.....Other obscure gems from this album are "Been Away Too Long" and "Hanging Tree"......Other UH songs in this style are "Beautiful Dream" and "Year or a Day" (Return to Fantasy Album) and "Dreammare" from their first Album, but their all time magnum opus (IMO) and my favorite song of all time by any band is "Tears in My Eyes" from the "Look at Yourself Album...
