Nascar, Indycar, F1... all very exciting sports, but also unfortunately come with risk of injury during a crash. Today I've compiled a bunch of infamous crashes where miraculously drivers survived. We talk about the accidents, the injuries, the recoveries, and how these racing organizations have changed the rules and improved vehicles to keep drivers' and spectators' health and safety at the track! Specifically I look at crashes involving Romain Grosjean, Robert Wickens, Ryan Newman, Rusty Wallace, Mike Conway, Geoff Bodine, Eddie Irvine, Fernando Alonso, and Lee Petty. Gorsjean not only survived 160mph crash, but he stayed in the flames for 27seconds. That's just amazing how much safety in racing sports developed.
It's especially amazing if you consider that the regulation required the overalls to withstand 1000 C° for 12 seconds. Grosjean more than doubled that time. He was lucky that his safety equipment was well beyond what the regulations asked for.

@@prototypical No please not. Avus is horrible. 2 hairpins with 2 8km long straights. 1. It extremly dangerous. 2. Most of the cars would DNF because the engine would blow up after going full throttle for so long and 3. The race would be really boring.
@@janzumstein8241 safety has advanced so far that those tracks might not be as dangerous as they were when they were raced on back In the day it was the cars that were dangerous sure the tracks need a bit of a re desgin but still should be safe nonetheless
as a F1 fan, ı watched Grosjean's crash live and those seconds were like years. He was one of the luckies. We have lost great pilots during the races
Was raised religiously watching f1 and motogp so I’d seen a lot of crashes growing up watching live races, seeing that crash and hearing the panic in the voices of the commentators was terrifying and was the scariest crash I think I’ve seen in f1
I watched it live to and it was 2:40 minutes that felt like an eternety
I was so sure he died I started crying, it all felt like an eternity like you say
What did it for me was a few seconds after the crash. They cut away and were showing the other cars coming through turns 9 and 10 heading back to the pits and you can clearly see the fireball in the background. It was at that point that I thought I watched someone die.
my ex just walked in after the crash, saw my face and asked what's wrong? I replied that someone just died. I saw grosjeans car just before impact, and I knew the speed they're going there. was 100% sure someone died there.
You talking about how a sudden stop is the worst reminded me of a Quote from Jeremy Clarkson:
"Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that's what gets you."

As someone who hit a pole at 120mph , I know that had to have sucked, but I can’t imagine hitting something that fast *AND* being engulfed in flames. Sends chills through my whole body remembering what I went through.

Poles and trees are some of the most dangerous, you got really lucky it didn’t split you along with the car
Here’s kind of a sad fact: Romain Grosjean was actually very close to just staying down in the car because he was at peace with dying. He said something along the lines of he had accomplished everything he had wanted, and he was at peace with death, but then realized that he has a family that is more than likely watching him at that moment so he decided to fight for them and get out of the car.
What tickles my brain is that he forgot his family during the accident. VERY good thing he remembered them before it was too late.

I really think you should interview Grosjean (he has a CZcams channel) not just about his crash and his recovery, the burns were worse than they initially thought, but also his experiences with going to a sports psychologist and how it has helped him over the years. He is a really articulate guy. As for how they don't get knocked out in F1 a lot of it is down to the HANS device although it isn't perfect and if they have a crash exceed a certain level of force they are automatically sent to the medical centre for evaluation regardless of how they are feeling

I get what Dr Mike was saying about how it's wrong for him to be sending a message by walking towards the ambulance, but if he reached that point, he was already evaluated by at least one doctor on hand who has the power to sit him down and get the rest of the medical personnel on track there to set up a tent so he can be further evaluated in some privacy, with the option on being airlifted to a designated hospital. Having one of the 2 medical helicopters unavailable IS cause for suspending the race event. If he was deemed able to do that (walking towards the ambulance) it's because it was deemed in good enough shape.
Would love a Grosjean - Dr Mike Collab. Romain seems like a swell guy, and no dobut it would make a great video.

One of the scariest things about Grosjean’s crash is that the height of his body and the design of the barrier means that if not for the Halo device, he would’ve probably been decapitated by the barrier at that speed.
Yeah, I’m still baffled how the car wedged through the barrier and was split in half. Never thought that was possible. One would expect the car to come to a hold because of the barrier. Or completely smash through it (or over it) at that speed.
@@PaintrainX the splitting in half is apparently supposed to happen in those situations. The piercing of the barrier and bursting into flame like it did is the bit that wasn't supposed to happen. They made safety changes to the cars following it so that the fuel tanks would not rupture.

If there was ever proof needed that the halo is a worthwhile addition to the cars it’s that crash!
What about the 2000 Nascar car crash
Even if he wasn't decapitated, he would have definitely got knocked unconscious, and that would probably be fatal given the fireball around him
Racing suits usually are fire protectant for about 30 seconds. Grosjean was in there for 27 seconds. It's crazy that he survived this horrific crash. He is now in IndyCar.

Regulations at the time actually called for 12 seconds fire resistant suits sooooo, yeah, more than doubled it.
And that means that he had 27 seconds of no oxygen
Think about what Niki Lauda went through, those fire suits back then stopped nothing.
Crazy thing is they upgraded the suits that year but the gloves were still made out of the old material and his hands got fucked up
0:10 you know when he gives a disclaimer that everyone survives that these clips would be some of the most terrifying accidents
That first one was absolutely insane. Miracle that he survived.

I was watching Bahrain 2020 live, I really thought I had just witnessed somebody die instantly. The fact that Grosjean survived with relatively minor injuries is truly truly a miracle and a testament of the safety features that these cars have nowadays.
Yeah that race was very nasty to watch as a grosjean fan.

His wife Marion said she thought her husband was dead for 2 minutes and 45 seconds. Cannot imagine watching it unfold and trying to get their kids in another room so they don't see anything.
It was the first race i watched with my boyfriend. Needless to say I was shocked. Being a science junkie I had to check the mechanism behind that accident. I was stunted that he survived that.
That was first race I managed my then new girlfriend to watch with me, she's also soon to be a doctor. Man, 3rd(?) Corner into the race and then this crash happened. I was tearing up. I love the sport with my whole heart, my brother called me and his words were 'another one after Jules is gone. When they started showing pitlane I was sure Romain is gone. As for what Mike has said about leaving the car so that Marion (Romains wife) can see him alive, well, at that time he himself said the only thing that got him out of his car was him thinking about his children and wife. Love is strong dude.
@@Wyrobas that’s some thing people who didn’t watch it live will never understand. There was a five minute delay on the broadcast before they told us that Grosjean was even out of the car.
Grosjean did go unconscious for a short while. After he regained it, he said he wondered why it was so bright outside because it was a night race. By the time he realized he was on fire, he couldn't free his leg and thought he was gonna die and accepted his fate. Then he remembered all of his family and knew he couldn't die. Miraculously managed to free his leg, undue the safety devices, and pull himself out of the car against melting carbon fiber. He was trapped in the fire for 27 seconds.

You know, I’m one of the biggest F1 addicts so I’ve seen roman’s crash many time but every time it still amazes me when I see him get out of the flames like it was nothing
When I was studying to be a paramedic, one of our professors played us a video about the rapid response teams to the isle of man tt. Incredible video about trauma from high-speed accidents.
Last year at Silverstone, Zhou Guanyu had an INSANE crash. His car flipped multiple times, skidded across the gravel upside down, then smashed against the barrier, went airborne again, then his car got jammed between the barrier and catch fence. He probably wouldn't have survived that if not for the halo. He ended up just walking away with nothing but some minor bruising. I'm so glad the safety in F1 has seriously increased.
Not to mention how long he was stuck upside down before they could even get him out of the car.
The halo did not save Zhou Guanyus life as it is the rollhoops task to keep the drivers safe when upside down. The crash itself wasnt heavy at all compared to other crashes on this list, as only when the car came to a stop in the catch fence the forces on his body peaked into possibly harming levels. The most dangerous part was Zhou not being able to leave the car. It might have looked terrifying but the accident was not that heavy.
@Peertje 06 Nah you're just straight up wrong. The roll hoop was snapped off during that crash. If that halo wasn't there, his head would've hit the ground. Zhou himself has literally said this.
@@peertje0635the roll structure that was supposed to be the main protection snapped off on impact after the first roll. It really was the halo that provided the protection for his head and neck, without it his helmet would have been dragging through the gravel.
Honestly with all of the crashes halo devices helped I'm thinking about saving the cash and modding my daily to have one lol
Grosjean crash was just lots of emotions for everyone. It could almost have been a fatal crash. In an interview, Grosjean said that when he first hit the barriers he struggled to exit the cockpit and almost gave up. He thought about his family and started to fight his way out of the car. That's why the reason he walked to the ambulance, he wanted to show his family that he is ok
I laughed at the video he did in the hospital. He goes "hey everyone I'm ok (looks at his hands) well, sorta ok"
I was so glad he was ok
Still is now when rewatching it, even knowing the outcome. Watching it live was incredibly gut wrenching.
The really great thing about this is a few months later, he was asked to drive the same circuit in a touring car, and he was mic'ed up. What did Grosjean say as he passed the corner where he had the accident? "Hey, guys, that's my corner!" Collaspe of everyone in hopeless laughter.......🤣
When I read that I honestly nearly cried. I can't imagine how terrifying it was and how hopeless it must have felt to be surrounded by flames but the fact that the thought of his family got him out. Just. Powerful stuff
Be interesting to see him cover the crashes that did result in deaths. Dale would probably be in that video too.
I used to watch Robert Wikens race in the DTM. The second I saw his crash come up, I knew that everyone wasn't going to be "perfectly fine" in this video. That's really rough.

If anyone feels that the crash at 7:04 is familiar, it's probably because it is. That's the crash that inspired the part in Cars where Strip "The King" crashes. The animators did a recreation of the flip nearly perfectly with the camera angles until the closeups. Even the audio of the crash from Cars lines up timing wise. The crash was INSANE & it's crazy the Rusty lived

Grosjeans crash was horrifying to watch live. I was immediately his with flashbacks of Bianchi's fatal crash. Was an absolute miracle that Grosjean survived.

You're very right about either staying in your car or getting to a safe distance. Many years ago a friend of mine called me because her car was broken down on the highway. She had managed to put it in the emergency lane as close to the guardrail as possible and with the hazards on, but was still in the car. She described the location and I realized she was sitting on the outside of a long left curve leading up to an overpass. Knowing that highway, I also knew there was poor visibility of the road up ahead for traffic going into that curve.
I told her to turn the wheels to point to the right side of the road, get out of the car, climb over the guardrail, walk back along the road for a bit and then take up position a good distance behind the guardrail. She was arguing at first that it was cold and dark outside and she didn't have a coat with her, but I managed to convince her. Less than two minutes after she had gotten to a safe position I heard the sound of screeching tires followed by a very loud crash and then more noise. I had to ask several times if she was ok before she was able to respond and tell me she was fine. She was going through so many emotions all at once. Meanwhile I had already dialed the emergency number on our landline to relay the location of the accident. Luckily a police car happened to be close by and was on the scene in just a few minutes and due to it being late at night with very little traffic no further accidents occurred.
Both cars involved were totaled and the other driver turned out to be too drunk to walk, but luckily was unharmed otherwise. My friend and I went to look at her car the next day and it was hardly recognizable. We and the tow truck driver who happened to be there at the same time to drop off another car were all convinced she likely would not have survived, or if she had she would surely have suffered life-changing injuries.

The fact that Grosjean pulled 56G’s in that crash and walked away is mind blowing. Amazing what we have achieved in motorsport safety

Another crazy crash was from Sophia Flörsch in the F3 race in Macau 2018. She was operated for 11 hours after a neck injury but was back in the car after about 100 days. She was racing a lot in races like 24h of Le Man's, but finally is back in an F3 car for the new season this year. I have so much respect for this girl
Yeah that was an absolutely unbelievable crash. So fortunate that she survived, and amazing that it didn't deter her one bit.
I saw the video and was shocked she survived also I believe she survived because her head was perfectly inline with the press bunker window

Most people don’t realise that F1 drivers are for the most part almost superhuman levels in fitness being able to withstand an INSANE amount of g’s and can withstand 50g’s for a few seconds at a time and stay conscious and minimal damage, aswell as there mental fitness and being able to spend so much time in extreme heat conditions
Romain cemented his name in motorsport history as “The phoenix” a badass name for a badass driver
I internally cringed at the mention of hand burns, I got a second degree burn to my left hand last year and holy hell the recovery process was one of the most painful things I’ve ever experienced

I'm sorry that's awful I'm glad you're doing better now. I once had 2nd degree sunburns to my back chest shoulders and because I went to a water park and even though I kept applying sunscreen I didn't know it kept getting washed off and I am Ultra Fair but I tan really well when I'm out in the sun but I remember after this sunburn I had so many huge blisters it hurt to even wear clothes. I was 14 and I remember my mom taking me to the department store basically like covered in a moo moo for those who don't know a moo moo is basically a giant nightgown and my mom had to buy me like new bras and new shirts that didn't hurt my skin and it probably took me about a week to two weeks to completely get the blisters gone and start healing up.
Before that happened to me I didn't even know you could get a second degree sunburn that was terrifying.
@@allisonhunter1063 god that sounds awful! I’ve never been sunburned but my cousin who’s the polar opposite to me complexion wise burns very easily. I’ve awoke thought how painful it must be. That sounds so sore, I didn’t know you could get 2nd degree sunburn either! Thank god your mum covered you up

The Grosjean crash is something I will never forget. I walked through the door just as it happened and I will never get the image of my dads face out of my head. He was shouting “he’s dead, he’s dead, no way can he be alive” we just froze and stared at the screen in disbelief. Then watching him climb over that barrier and run from the flames was just incredible. The emotions this clip gives me each time I watch it are just indescribable. So glad he is alive and well all be it with a few lasting injuries but it could have been so much worse!
when i saw it i was like, “did i just watch him die oh my- oh my god. grosjean please” i was about to have a heart attack, my heart sank.
A similar thing happened to me, our whole family was stood watching the TV hoping that they would show the crash again, which sounds awful but they would only replay it if he was confirmed to be okay. We were all convinced that we had seen someone's death and so relieved to see him okay. It's crazy how many lives have been saved due to the development of the halo in F1 cars.
I was 100% sure I just watched a driver die live. Heart was going a mile a minute. Was so relieved.

I met Mario Andretti too. When I was on the production tv crew for our local speedway! He was so friendly! that guy is my all time favourite driver.
The safety standards in today's racing are crazy (in a good way), there's some Indy wrecks I've seen in recent years that would've most definitely ended in tragedy only a few years prior for example: Simon Pagenauds mid Ohio crash, his brakes went out at 180mph, ended up rolling into the wall and he walked away unscathed
Grosjean wanted to walk to the ambulance because a lot of fans have seen accidents like this and even ones that look less severe that ended in death. It surely must have been a relief for his family to see it. He did what he could at the time to send the fastest message and eliminate the worry that he was gone.
His family was also watching that day i believe and he wanted to make sure they could see he was "fine".

As an F1 fan, it's great seeing Dr Mike talk about racing. I remember watching Zhou's crash and I was so scared because there was no news about his condition while he was trapped between the barriers. The Halo showing just how important safety measures are in racing.
And walking away from these crashes shows just how strong these racers are

Zhous crash saved some lives because some complete idiots stormed the track over a blind crest and were sat in the middle of it. Without the red flag there is every possibility those protestors would have had cars blowing past them at full speed and it may have been another Tom Pryce type accident.

@@natmartin0907 actually, the roll hoop made it worse by snapping off. If it didn’t fail his car tould most likely flip tbe correct way the moment he went onto the gravel

Hey Mike. I just recently subscribed to your channel. I was watching a video and once it ended, it showed me this video. See, I can relate! I used to be a race car driver in the SCCA racing a FF (Formula Ford) and suffered a near fatal racing crash at, Lime Rock Park. I ended up hitting the tire wall sideways at over 90 mph, and that impact instantly put/left me in a 23 day long coma! When I did finally awake I was extremely confused to say the least. Anyway, my recovery has been nothing short of miraculous, and even my neurologist told me that I was a "miracle" right in front of my father. I can basically do everything again i.e, walk, talk and even drive a car. If you were to ever meet me, then you'd never think that I was in a non-medically coma for 23 days. However, I do still have an issue that no doctor can figure out, not even my neurologist. Being my neurologist will NOT sign off on me to work anywhere again, so that makes my days LONG and boring. I live in Connecticut, and I believe you said in a video that you live in New Jersey? I would love to drive over to see you, pick your brain, or maybe you could refer me to somebody you know? I do not have any problems with my neurologist, great guy, but it never hurts to get another opinion. Please let me know! Brian

The survival cells in F1 cars are incredible. Grosjean’s crash showed that the car can literally be torn in half but that little tub they sit in is near indestructible in normal conditions. I also seem to remember the Haas tearing in half on at least one other occasion too after a crash
Monaco 2022, Schumacher. The tub really has come a long way, sadly it didn't save Anthoine Hubert's life in the 2019 F2 SPA race, but we inch ever closer to less Motorsport fatalities each year.
@@lewismatthews yeah unfortunately there is so much less protection from a side impact like that. Now if only they completely redesigned or removed sausage curbs to stop drivers from getting launched airborne all the time.
@@chilibeer3912 I think I heard someone said in a video before that T-bone crash is an F1 engineer's nightmare. Because there is really nothing significant that can be done to further improve the safety from a T-bone crash. Not if the model of current F1 car is to be preserved.
coming into the 2022 season the join between engine and the rear of the tub were weakened to make the separation happpen easier.
I remember it happened on two other occasions. That Haas had a funny tendency to get split in half in crashes.
As much controversy as there was around its introduction, the F1halo has definitely saved a few drivers. Enormous credit to every single safety feature of these sports.
This year again Zhou was saved by the halo. The single best addition to F1 cars in a more than a decade.
For example in the 2018 Belgium Gran Prix I believe? There was a car launched on top of the halo and would have hit the drivers head hard had the halo not been there.

I watched some of these live, the Wickens crash was actually his rookie year, and that race was the first one I got to watch with my dad, who I'd been telling about this 'fast young guy' all season. You'll be happy to know he won the TCR championship this season (not huge but nothing to scoff at). As a lifelong racing fan, great explanations.
Hey Doctor Mike, im actually on the safety crew at my local track. Most tracks have some form of the jaws of life. The track I help out at has a metal saw to cut roll bars and the local fire department is really close to the track and they can get to the track in roughly 10 minutes.
I'm really surprised that Alex Zanardi didn't make this list. He was in a nearly fatal accident that ripped both of his legs clean off and he almost died from blood loss on the helicopter ride to the hospital. He would go on to compete in touring car racing with hand controls and become a gold medalist in Paralympic handcycling. Really inspirational.

Slight misunderstanding with why Grosjean wanted to walk to the ambulance. It wasn't to prove how strong he was as a person - he explained later he knew it was the quickest way to let his family know he was alive, because they would see the footage before he had a chance to contact them.
Car recks hit close to home,
My grandpa has insomnia, and he was driving across the road and fell asleep. When he woke up, he had crashed into a tree, and the car was split in half.
Luckily, the crack, someway, somehow, had gone around him by half an inch. The only thing I could think about was how he must've had a spiritual shield around him keeping him safe,
He was unscathed minus a few cuts and bruises, I can't imagine what would happen if he actually got hurt.
I hope all these drivers get better and many more.

I was there in person for the Ryan Newman crash, absolutely terrifying. I just remember everyone sitting there in shock hoping and praying he was still alive. Everyone was silent, it was unnerving.

I watched the Newman crash live, and he was always my favorite racer, so I was very glad to hear he survived the crash.
as a very BIG F1 fan, i watched romans crash. I watched it with my dad. We both sat in silence watching the flames burst out. ‘ you just watched your first fatal crash.’ when he climbed out i heard my dads gasp of relief.
Fun Fact: in the movie "Cars", the crash of Strip 'The King' Weathers was inspired by Rusty Wallace's crash. If you watch the scene, the crash is almost identical to the footage of Wallace - from the moment he's airborne twisting around to the final flip.

Your last comment about winter driving. I live in Ontario Canada. I’m 2 hours north of Toronto now. I grew up on Lake Superior just north of Sault Ste. Marie then I lived in Thunder Bay for a few years. Toronto winter driving is nothing compared with areas around Lake Superior. I remember driving home with my daughter and the road to our house wasn’t plowed and it was knee deep. I drove with our windows open watching the tree line. It was a 10 minute drive and we had to stay over 60kms so I could push the snow in my 2000 Chevy cavalier. We made it home but not up the driveway.

I literally came here to comment about Lauda’s crash. That situation is ridiculous and Lauda is such a badass throughout the whole thing (imo)
James hinchcliffs crash also came to mind. Kinda surprised to see it didnt make the list.
Can also do Ott Tanak's crash at Monte Carlo. Big drop, but he and his co driver walked away basically unscathed (maybe a few bruises, but I don't remember specifics).
And Robert Kubicas crashes in 2007 Canadian GP in F1 and 2011 WRC crash (especially the second one because it was very dangerous)

This video brings back memories of my dad and grandparents watching NASCAR races every Sunday afternoon when I was growing up. Geoff Bodine was my dad's favorite driver. My grandma was a Bill Elliot fan. Her brother was a Dale Earnhardt fan. I remember when Dale Earnhardt died in a crash back in either 2000 or 2001. The crazy thing about it is that the crash that took his life wasn't even that bad. Nothing like the ones in this video! His head was jerked forward during the impact in a way that it killed him instantly.
As an occupational therapist and long-term subscriber, it's extremely refreshing to see a doctor who knows the value of what we do and advocates for us. This is the kind of interdisciplinary teamwork that makes me happy. Thank you Doctor Mike for being so holistic!
I had a bad BMX accident, folded my than flat back against my wrist and tore all the ligaments in my right hand.
I'm right handed and very much non ambidextrous.
Thanks to OT I managed to get 90% function back in my hand - it's not perfect but it doesn't prevent me from doing anything which is a miracle given the initial prognosis of "Learn to start using your left hand".

F1 has made insane strides to improve driver safety. The Halo directly saved Zhou Guanyu and Romain Grosjean. For those who don't know the Halo on F1 cars is a solid piece of Titanium that's 3D printed. It's designed to support the full weight of the car. In Romain's case, it essentially pierced the guard rail allowing him to survive that impact.
Yep, and the guardrails have killed F1 drivers in the past. (It's as graphic as you think it is).
We need to get these hybrid engines out. As soon as hybrid engines were introduced, F1 had its first driver test since Senna in 1994. The halo was just an alternative due to the bulky, heavy, unpredictable and uncontrollable hybrid engines when they spin. Also notice how we have also apparently had 10 driver near deaths in just the last 4 years of F1, clearly the cars are becoming more dangerous again.
The most amazing part about this is that you can actually 3d print with titanium. I had no idea about that, but pretty interesting id say.

There was the crazy F1 race last year where the halo saved Hamilton from a wheel on Verstapen's car. Pretty crazy.

3:55 I would like to point out that race car driver's necks are some of the strongest in the world. They can sustain around 5 g's comfortably with experienced drivers. And that's throughout a 2 hour race at least.
The design of the safety barriers and stuff in F1 is super important and impressive thats what alot of drivers are able to survive such an incredible Deceleration
I remember watching that Romain Grosjean crash live and genuinely thinking I just saw someone die. That was like worst case scenario in every aspect, and is a testament to how much goes into the safety of those cars. Go back to before the halo was added and he's dead there for sure. Same with Zhou Gaunyu this season in a crash that flipped his car, dug into the gravel, and was thrown over the safety barrier. Without the halo he's probably dead, but with it he was cleared from the hospital and was back to the track in time to watch the end of the race.
I vividly remember missing the start by a few minutes in tuning in to see a smoldering wreck thiking "surely that can't be a car!". It was.
Like they say in the Netflix Series: You really know it's bad when a whole racing crowd and the entire pit lane suddenly goes dead silent.
I didn’t watch grosjean’s crash live so I knew he was okay but Zhou’s I did. That was horrible and the red flag lasted ages with us not knowing what had happened…. Got to commend George for running up to him too eventhough the FIA then didn’t let him race after the red flag ended
@@amberherrod6110 Yeah the Zhou one was scary because they weren't allowed to show replays until they knew he was safe, but he was in such an awkward position to get him out that it took so much longer than normal.

Have you ever seen Dan Wheldon's crash? I don't recommend it if you haven't. Seriously, don't watch it. But I saw that one live. Changed everything for me. I know people who were at the track and can't imagine.
I see a lot of people talking about Grosjean's crash, but no one's talking Bodine's wreck at 9:29. Bodine not only was hit twice, but he stayed in the fence for almost 2 seconds. Each .5 of a second, you're hitting a fence poll. To add to that, this was before better safety features were implemented into these cars, meaning that his head was swinging around in the car as he was flipping. It's absolutely a miracle that he survived that crash.
The silence of the commentators during that accident is truly terrifying. Anytime the announcers go silent, just as they did for Grosjean's crash, it's not good. I watched Indy in Las Vegas in 2011 live. Something I'll never, ever forget.
@@ArtySen What make's it worse in the Bodine crash is the fact that a second before the crash, one of them says "Look out! This is gonna hurt!" Very disturbing
2:30 it helped a lot of people that he was walking, when watching live it took 30 minutes before there was any news. That he was walking was a huge relief, also for the other drivers. Also the G-sensor didnt go off, so the amount of g's were manageable, I think that helped the doctor to permit the walk.

Richard Hammond (formerly of Top Gear) was test driving a car powered by a jet engine. He crashed going almost 300 mph and was in a coma but is ok now. Thanks for shouting out occupational therapists by the way!
he also crashed a Rimac Concept One. Now all Rimac cars have a fire extinguisher with words "In Case of Hillclimb, Extinguish Fire" on them. God bless our Little Hamster

As a massive F1 fan watching that race with the Grosjean crash. It was terrifying and so dreading too, the moment the car catches fire your heart hurts and felt the worse could happen. To see him not only survive and to have so light injuries is quite outstanding the HALO saved his life alongside how safe a F1 car is nowadays and not forgotten the Marshalls at the track and the Medical team, major respect to all
It completely dissolved all of the criticism on the halo. We still see the halo saving lives from the past 2 seasons. Last year being max and Lewis fighting and getting into an incident. And this year when zhou got flipped and pinned into a barrier at the start in silverstone.

When I saw the fireball I was certain he was dead. No one survives piercing a barrier like that. Except in F1 apparently they do.
I was praying that we weren't going to watch a man burn alive. I cried when he appeared out of the flames. All he wanted was to tell his wife he was ok. She was probably praying too that she wasn't watching her husband perish. How that track official knew where he was in the fire gave him that split second to see his way out.

Two other f1 crashes that come to mind are Lauda and Barrichello. Lauda’s was hard to watch and the injuries were severe, but with Barrichello it was even more wild to see that he was almost completely unscathed.

He was awake and talking before the end of that practice session, and even Damon Hill said that after seeing the crash and resulting injuries, everyone though the cars were strong and you could be shaken but not hurt

Very true. He's still very lucky. Even with modern safety, that crash could've easily been fatal if he was knocked out or had more trouble getting out. But not too long ago, that crash would've been a 100% fatal crash.
Should check out Top Gear + The Grand Tour's crashes over the years too if you like these. Richard Hammond's jet-powered car crash was widely known, and the worst one. He talked a good bit about the medical repercussions (near death, coma, loss of memory, taste rewiring, i think seizures at one point, etc). But he had at least a few more crashes, and the other two had a couple as well. The prototype going over the side of that hill was a scary one.

After my c-section I messaged family and friends that everything was fine. (It was a planned c-section because of severe preeclampsia)
I don't remember anything after that, I was gone for 11-12 hours. A reaction to the spinal anesthetic. My spouse told me that I was puking, had trouble breathing and slurred in my speech during those hours, I was unconsious/sleeping most of the time.
But yeah... those famous words, "I'm fine".
I did the same thing when I passed out from severe anemia when I was a teen. I don't remember much of it at all, most of this is what my sister told me. I began walking towards my family with a vacant expression, weirdly holding up items I had in my hands while my face turned sheet white, even my lips went white. They asked me if I was OK and I said "I'm fine" and then promptly hit the floor. They sat me up, I came to and repeated that I was fine, so my dad tried to get me on my feet, but I passed out again in his arms. He then threw me over his shoulder and rushed me to the car to drive me to the ER. The whole time in the back seat with my sister, I kept rolling my eyes and insisting that I didn't need to go to the hospital, I was fine. Turns out I had one foot in the grave, needing multiple blood transfusions and packed red blood cells to avoid cardiac arrest. Nurses were squeezing the blood bags to get it into me as quickly as possible. But I kept insisting that I was fine.
I have type 1 diabetes and if my husband had a dollar for all the times I've said "I'm fine" before immediately not being fine, he'd probably be loaded.

I'm an F1 fan myself(season just finished today) and ever since the introduction of the halo in 2018, it has saved so many lives. Leclerc 2018, Grosjean 2020, Hamilton 2021 and Zhou 2022 are perfect examples. People say that F1 isn't a sport but if you look at these crashes, it shows that racing drivers are putting their lives on the line for people's entertainment.
Russell at Spa 2020 too - without it Giovinazzi's runaway tyre would kill him.

The engineering in F1 is truly insane. The number of crashes ive seen that would be fatal in a normal car, but they walk away unscatched is insane.
TBF consumer cars are INCTEDIBLE at surviving crashes nowadays too. You put any car made in the past say 15y against something from the 70s, 80s thru a crash test, its insane the engineering thats gone into makijg the car fail around you while trying to keep you in a syable cage during extreme impact.... while at the same time, makijg cars more dhrable from lighter crashes! Theres gonna come a day in the next few decades youre gonna need vintage car licenses and not just for emissions, but just the safwty gaps
Some places iirc even ket certain vehickes over a certainnage not even have seatbwlts and drive around (usually just lioe, your city or town tho, not highway etc, still tho)
also you gotta respect the pilots, driving that fast is a hell of a exercise! F1 pilots have the strongest necks in the world

I remember being only a young tacker here in australia at auscars (basically australian nascar) seeing one accident similar to Rusty's. I think that was the final season of auscar here in australia. The driver whos name I cannot remember but he did survive. But as a drag racer and someone involved in motorsports one thing we say to a lot of people interested in motorsport is that the sport is safe, the safety equipment is perfect. But accidents happen. And speeding doesnt kill, the abruptly coming stationary does.
The Australian V8 Supercars (and its predecessor comps) had some spectacularly wild crashes over the years as well. There are definitely some worth checking out. There are also excellent compilations on YT.
F1 has so many safety features now. 10 years ago that first driver would've either been dead or in a coma from that crash, it's amazing how they can minimize driver deaths.
The 70's were an absolute massacre for F1. Something that is poignantly made clear in the movie Rush. The developments in terms of safety for open wheel racing are nothing short of amazing.
There's a photo of indent, that HALO made in the barrier during that crash. Whole height of it was imprinted in metal. By the looks of it, i am convinced, that Grosjean would be headless in the morgue if it weren't for the HALO...
all safety rules in motorsport are written in blood, and I and many others say that another needs to be written for rally cars so we don't have another Craig Breen like death.
Watching Romain as a fan was horrifying. I was a fan of his before the crash, I knew how good he could be. He is extremely underrated, and my heart sank when I saw the fireball. I thought I'd saw the first death since 2015. Thankfully the Halo, the HANS device, the safety cell, everything did their jobs perfectly.
Robert Wickens sadly became a paraplegic, but has since made a very good recovery and is back racing again. Harrowing.

I was at Pocono for the Wickens crash. I nearly jumped out of the stands when I saw that fireball on the backstretch.
Full respect to those that run Indy. Love the league, takes some guts to run it. I love how he has stuck around with the team and attends most if not all of the races. I think he wants to run the 500 in a modified car one year believe it or not, whether or not the league will let him is another story.
He's regained some movement back in his legs due to it being a bruised spinal cord and not severed, he's hoping to one day walk again
Your discussion about the sudden stop being the most dangerous remind me of when we lost Dale Sr. I remember watching that race and thinking that didn't look too bad but then the announcer seemed really worried and then Senior never got out and then I knew something was really really wrong
You should consider watching and analyzing crashes from the 24 hours of Le Mans! There are some huge crashes there too!
Yeah le mans accidents are wild.
A lot of these crashes lead to safety developments between driver equipment, car restraint and safety gear like roll cages and the F1 Halo, and even advancements for tracks with the development of softer barriers. Racing has come a very long way all because of these brave people putting their lives on the line for their sport.
Maybe you'd want to talk about Niki Lauda's crash in Nurburgring in 1976. He suffered quite a nasty burn that permanently damaged half of his face. Also, he inhaled the toxic fumes from the fire and burned his lungs.

We got in a car accident about 7-8 years ago, and my moms legs were on the dashboard, still to this day, her lower back kills. I don't understand why people race like this, it wasnt that bad of an accident for us, and it not only was traumatic for us, but traumatic for my Moms lower back. Please sit normally and have your seatbelt on, our accident wasn't severe, but it was so scary
I saw the Grosjean crash as it happened. I was in tears thinking about how sad his loved ones would be if he was gone. I cheered so hard when he walked out of that fire.

Niki Lauda also drove again - only 42 (!) days later. He won another two World Driver Championships after that crash. Just unreal commitment, passion and competitivness. We miss you, Niki.

I think one of the biggest crashes and comeback story is Alessandro Zanardi. A former champ car champion, went to F1 unsuccessfully, went back to Champ Car. In one race in 2001, he lost control out of the pits, his car got t-boned by another car which made him lose the lower limbs of his feet. He came back to race touring cars and is also a 4x Olympic Gold Medalist with the Handbike, essentially a bike driven while sitting and operated by the hands. He also did triathlons in a handbike and wheelchair. In 2020, he also survived a crash in his bike with a truck in an unofficial handbike race. He sustained major injuries to his head, was able to leave the hospital after more than 1,5 years in December 2021.

Ryan Newman has had a couple real scary crashes. Oddly enough, he has an engineering degree and is a huge proponent of upgrading safety features in the NASCAR series.
Grosjean's crash was absolutely terrifying to watch, and seeing him racing IndyCar nowadays is amazing to see.
Zhou Guanyu had a terrifying crash at Silverstone this year where he was flipped upside down and skidded upside down for a long distance, flung into the air, and landed into a catch fence. Watching that love was so nerve-wracking because they wouldn't show any replays until they got confirmation he was okay. Thankfully he walked away with practically no injuries.
Ironically the thing that may have saved Ryan Newman's life was a bar named after him from a wreck he had over 10 years before
NASCAR has had its fair share of catch fence crashes. Dillon 2015 and Snider 2022 are some examples.
At the 3:48 mark, the spin shouldn’t create any g’s. The reason being the the driver is at the center of rotation and so he would held in place and stabilized. Like the center of a gyroscope or a figure skater.
Gorsjean didn’t wave his hands to show that he is all good and strong. He knew that his wife and kids were watching and just wanted to give a sign to them that he survived

Every single person, both at the racetrack and at home was convinced he was dead. Getting pulled out in a stretcher wouldn't do anything to change that. Walking out did.
Yeah, especially if his kids were younger, I can see why he would want them to see him walking right away, to spare them the trauma of thinking their dad is dead.

@@anomaly3215 Adrenaline will make it so that you feel somewhat fine, he felt good enough to make that gesture since obviously his family was the main thing on his mind. Even then, he was helped by the medical team to the ambulance.

The safety cell is so strong that you can drop a city bus on it at terminal velocity, and the only thing that will happen is that the carbon fiber might be scratched.

What you said about internal bleeding: American legend Mark Donohue crashed heavily at the 1975 Austrian Formula 1 GP practice session. He walked away and no precautionary actions were taken. He felt bad during the night and he was taken then to hospital. Unfortunately, it was too late: he died two days later due to a cerebral haemorrhage.
