I tried the VLOG on my S1H I used the Varicam luts based on your last video and Wowee, it transforms the camera! I finally ordered the VLOG update for my GH5 I’m excited to see what that does. I am finding the S1H is a lot of camera to bring with you, the lenses are bigger, the body, battery, charger, everything, so the S1H might stay at home quite a bit for stationary video work. The GH5 is just so easy to take with you.
You don't need an S1H unless you plan on shooting a Netflix special. No non-video person will notice the small differences between these cameras (or any decent 4k camera for that matter). It's about content and editing skills!!
I’ve been a very happy GH5 owner / DP since 2018, and now am an even happier S1H shooter since upgrading in 2022. They aren’t a perfect pair like I was hoping (picture profiles with the same name don’t exactly match due to S1H newly designed image processor, for example); but they can work well together when needed 👍
I watched set to 4k on a 24" 2k monitor.....WOW🤯 The GH5 was no slouch either. And now back to lower resolution😂 FYI, I also had bass heavy headphones on. Almost every table thump of your hand and arm was noticeable. Happy New Year!!
The Everyday Dad you should high pass your audio! 85-100hz; get rid of rumble, thumps, etc. Could always use multiband compression as well. With that being said, getting rid of it at the source is always best. Can’t polish a turd lol

One of the things about my GH5s that I have just started to experiment with is the 6K (almost) video. It works with V30 cards and in Premiere (on my computer) it edits very easily. I encourage anyone with a GH5 to give it a try. One of the reasons I use a Ninja V is the files are very easy to edit. I was going to buy a second one but now that I’ve played with the 6K I don’t think I’ll be doing that. The files coming out of the GH5 are 10 bit 200 mbs, they look great.

You realize the GH5 can shoot 6k right? The GH5 trumps the S1H in a few areas. 1. Rolling Shutter is horrendous on the s1h. 2. s1h in 60 fps forces a crop. When cropped it is slightly larger than the m43 sensor of the GH5.... slightly. 3. Ghosting and Blue pixel over-exposure. The s1h suffers from Blue Pixel burn, which makes it unusable as a true cinema camera. You even see it in your sun video. The GH5 does not. 4. External recording, on the s1h using a atmos recorder you cannot see what you are recording. This is a detrimental flaw and would never be considered for a professional. As you are going to want to see what the monitor is recording always. It's far from perfect, and there are other flaws that should be mentioned before anyone even think of purchasing this at that price. For vloggers who need to feel important, yea it's good. But they're in the same boat as those vloggers who use REDs to record. I say this owning both cameras.
I'm buying the gh5 for pro work in 2020. Really excited. This video was really helpful. I'll follow the same strategy. Watch all the reviews and buy when the camera has 2 new models. So when the s1h mk ii hits the market. Used s1h in 2022 💪🏻💪🏻

Excellent sum up! I actually picked up a brand new GH5 last week for AU$1375 (US$965) - caveat - with a AU$200 cash back from Panasonic. Now if that isn't incentive to get a GH5 I don't know what is. I was happily using my GH4 but when the Boxing Day sales showed up with such insanely cheap prices I just had to do it. The S1H is still up around the AU$6000 mark so while I'd love one it is still some time off.

I’m absolutely amazed by my S1H! I’ve also bought the 24-70 2.8 S Pro and the Sigma 35mm 1.2 DG DN L-mount! The picture coming out from the 1.2 is beyond everything I’ve ever used and the Manual Focus with the camera Focus Peaking works really well! The screen is much more useful than it was with my GH5 for manual focus. I don’t even use my Ninja V, maybe for the ProRes Raw, but I’ll see if it gives more than the internal codecs and Vlog.
The S1H with a lens on it is one HEAVY camera but I think it's made for cages and mounts than handheld. You are right about the GH5 it's still a great camera even after three years since launch and if there is someone reading this who is an online creator they should buy the GH5 or at less get the GH4 for a B-roll camera to start to buy into the ecosystem. I'm biased having used most of the Lumix range. Great review Gary as ever
Adapt to canon EF always!!! Buy good lenses once, you’ll still have them in 10 years no matter what cropped or full frame cameras come out by then. The expensive metabones is worth it for the GH5, just factor adapters in when you are considering buying new cameras. Used options are always great too, and some even have variable ND inside of it
So this Camera has me messed up.. In my stable I have a Canon C100, Canon 5dMarkIV, Sony A6400, and a Panasonic g85... Was looking to upgrade to a Sony FS7, C200, or C300 MKII... This Camera just cannot be ignored as a serious Cinema camera... The form factor ergonomics would be a logical easy step up without spending dedicated cinema camera prices... The only downside is lenses... What are your thoughts on a sigma mc21 as I have good Canon glass already and my dilemma on which way to go.... My discipline will be documentary film making.
I’m legitimately shocked by the image quality I get on the S1H. But I do agree about the lenses I wish there was a bigger selection out there. I haven’t had the chance to use the MC21 unfortunately so I can’t really speak to it.

@@TheEverydayDad I almost went with the GH5 cus I knew this was the best camera on earth for a while but had to go with the BMPCC 4K based off what I do. But yeah Panasonic's functionality and image are eye candy.
@@Slesaint17 better image quality and RAW/Prores codecs on the BMPCC 4K for corporate gigs. GH5 will be better for online content and overall camera. I will recommend the GH5 for a easier use camera BUT if you're ready to elevate your filming skills and game... BMPCC 4k is the way. Having both is a goal.
DLE Vision yeah I definitely want to have both ahahaha! I went with the GH5 as I want to be able to use it for run and gun shoots too. My goal is to have the BMPCC4k as well for short films and narratives
If I ever want to film a Netflix series, then I will get the S1H. Yeah, it's a beast that makes the GH5 seem... dinky-ish... but, that price tag, tho! Though I was looking at the lenses and while they are expensive, they're not super high for full frame glass. That crown is still held by the RF lenses. Anyway, makes me want to get an S1H, but I'm not ready to make that kind of investment. I mean, even if I were making daily vlogs, I could easily do that with the GH5 without fear. Maybe I'll just save my cash and wait for the GH6. MFT 6K, maybe? LOL
I want to try an S1H, but I don't need it. It's too big to use handheld for long periods, so my C200 comes with me when I can take a tripod. Its autofocus is unsuitable for gimbal work... My canon EOS R comes out for that. I use the GH5 and GH5s for travel and handheld work. The only niche the S1H fills is handheld work {in short bursts) under low light conditions. Its a very large investment but for what I see as very limited use case. BUT, I still want one. If I was to get one, I'd probably sell my GH5s, GH5 & G9... And it would then be my luck for Panasonic to announce a GH6. I don't think I"ll be taking the plunge, but I'm a little jealous.
I’m a Sony guy, have always been. Huge respect for the GH5, have throughly considered it when I was living in the 6000 series world of Sony. With that being said, the S1H has been such a tease for me. I’m SO interested. I think my biggest issue is the auto focus. With that being said, I use manual as much as I can (which is honestly a lot), as it’s just more controllable and professional. But in run and gun situations, having solid AF makes a HUGE difference for me. I would seriously switch out of the Sony ecosystem if their autofocus was more reliable. Sadly, that’s the deal breaker for me. Everything else from the S1H, including that stupid price tag, is what I want in a “DSLR” style camera. But if I’m getting something of such, I’d love solid AF. If not, I’d just hang tight and buy a used RED.. which still might be worth it nonetheless. Appreciate the insight and solid review/comparison.

Just buy the GH5. It’s the best decision on gear I ever made, right ahead of getting a Ronin M gimbal! I shoot many live events, this thing gets great footage and photos for the musicians that often hire me! Here’s the kicker: I shoot 99.9% of my shots on a LUMIX 14mm 2.5F pancake lens and a LUMIX 20mm 1.7F pancake lens! I spent less than $400 on lenses that do most of my work! Why do I use those primes? Because they’re so lightweight for what they can do which significantly increases my gimbal’s battery life and makes it function smoother, and most shots are close up anyways! If you shoot event photos the 6k(18mp) photo mode will have you falling in love because it shoots a 6k video at about 14fps and you go back in after the event and go through each clip frame by frame in the camera and save the perfect shot with no one blinking and everyone looking just right. My only regret was that I bought two Nikon’s before buying one of these!
Wait... EDD out here rockin’ the Underurmour hoodie with no cap look. 😆 I like this camera, but I can’t justify the price. I can get the GH5 or BMPCC 4K for $1300 and the 6K is 2500 and do Prores for FCPX. Right I’m still shooting with my beloved G7. Then again I’m a filmmaker so that’s a difference.
I totally agree! It is an investment to consider carefully. However, I couldn't resist buying one. And I really do not regret it. With sunny weather conditions, I find myself struggling alot with v-log exposure though. I film manually and leave the ISO at lowest native 640. I concentrate on the highlights which do not exceed 80 ire on the wfm. Theoretically they could even touch the 85 ire bar. I still have the impression that my footage is way to bright. Do you have any insights on that part?
So, as someone who is never going to sell content to Netflix, what advantages do you see for your content to investing the extra $1,600 for this over the S1? They have the same sensor, same V-LOG, and if you dont have a need for the 400mbps codec the same 10 bit 422 codec at 150mbps. It just seems like the features you are really excited about here are present in the mucher cheaper S1, just without the Netflix hype.
So what is the S1H like as a stills camera? I use a GH5 for video but use Nikons for photography and wondering whether to swap the Nikons for an S1H but the D4s is great for sports and wildlife photography with decent AF and 11fps. Or maybe wait and see if a GH6 arrives this year.
It is worth it IMO, as it's a true cine cam in a mirrorless body. It's one of the few cameras Netflix approves as an A cam on their production, the second cheapest is $10,000 for body alone. However, for those who can't afford it, the GH5 is still amazing

What are you using for Lenses? I saw the Sigma Lenses but they don’t have stabilization so I don’t know how well it will work with the 5 axis on the S1H
Jufloca yea , S1H has 2nd native iso of 5000 in V-Log which is twice that of 2500 in the GH5s. Gh5s sacrificed the photographic aspect, whereas the S1H is a full blown hybrid camera.
Nice review! I wonder if you have any plan to compare GH5 vs G9 Since they all got firmware update and there is a fare amount of price difference. It would be nice to hear your idea through the video.
Thanks for the reviews. It is a lot of money to spend if starting out in the digital content world. Video footage quality and appearance changes between different cameras - are there any drone cameras which look/can look as good as the GH5 or Sony Rx100 footage? Thinking about continuity...
It's not just the price of the body that holds back the S1H, it's also the price of great lenses. M4/3 has plenty of high value lenses. For people who would have to start from scratch with lenses by moving to this format, that's hard to justify
I just got an EOSR to vlog with and I have a 1Dx2 for more serious work. You make a great case for the S1H. As Michael L. said, you are evil my friend ;) How do you think the S1H compares to the 1dx? Is it miles better for cinema? Could I adapt my EF lenses (otherwise it's a deal breaker)...Or I could maybe find a used Ursa mini but would probably cost double...Arrrgh, technology is moving so fast sometimes I feel like I'm just working to pay for the new gear. Guess I'm addicted, ha!
Unfortunately I already have way too much money invested in EF lenses. There is an adapter by Novoflex but it's not confirmed that the AF will work with the S1H + adapter + Canon EF lenses.

Heck yeah I try to respond as much as I can 😁 (it’s gotten much harder as the channel has gotten bigger) I’m currently conflicted. I really like the GH5 (like a lot) so I don’t really see the big upgrade in specs. But the image quality is so good on the S1H it’s shocking me every day I use it 🤯
I've used the Sigma MC-21 adapter with a Sigma 50mm (Canon EF mount) and as of right now there is no AFC, only AFS - and with all current firmware updated it's still a pretty slow performer, IMO. Does not work as well today as the MC-11 (e-mount to canon EF) adapter works, even with the same lens. Just my experience.
Panasonic Gave us years of affordable Cameras unlike all other makers, About time they made some good money so that they keep on giving us the amazing features and quality stuff we took for granted, and the S1H is still cheaper and better than the opposition
especially nice summary. I'm soon restarting my ogauge model train youtube channel shortly. very hard to find the best camera equipment for filming trains & layouts. very disappointed in videos on my sony a7r3 video focus wander, sony rx100 with 5 minute 4k overheats.Thought the many lenses from mirrorless would add a lot in videos vs camcorders much easier focus in videos. trying ax100, ax700 camcorders now. Most train guys know model trains, but not cameras, what lenses, audio, lighting, tripods, camcorders. I like model trains, have a large train collection in boxes, but knowledge of what to use when is very, very difficult to find/learn and expensive. Wish you could connect & share your knowledge. I also have a canon 60d, 7d, and g20. please help. My train videos will be mostly shot from 1.5 ft out to 6 feet. you video makes me wish I had started with a gh5 or g9. I have no friends in either cameras or model trains for sharing or learning.
I think I would have invested the cash you put in the S1H instead of buying it. Considering the type of video work you do, the GH5 is a perfect camera for your CZcams production. Each to his own.

I’ve been curious if the S1H or BMPCC6K matches to canon color better. I’ve been back and forth between these two cams to fill in the gaps that exist between my c200 on the higher end and my EOSr’s on the lower end. Guess I’ll just have to put both of them in my hands and see 😂
I got both cameras as well. When i record 5.9k footage off the S1H on a ninja 5 ssd card the footage wont play back on my computer nor on adobe , I just got the S1H can you tell me what im doing wrong?
Question, how do you think the GH5 will work with the Suiri anamorphic 35 mm. I see the gh5 has an anamorphic mode, but without having one in hand, not sure where that would take my aerial shooting wide angle. Can you help me here? Thanks!
I just got the GH5. Now I need a new computer to be able to edit videos smoothly without wanting to throw the computer out the window. The S1H system is way too expensive of a camera ecosystem for me.

I loved my GH5 but the FULL FRAME that panasonic put into play with the S models is amazing! Absolutely happy with my switch to Full Frame.

Yeah I do wish they had better autofocus but I really like the functionality they gave to get around needing it.
@@TheEverydayDad I almost went with the GH5 cus I knew this was the best camera on earth for a while but had to go with the BMPCC 4K based off what I do. But yeah Panasonic's functionality and image are eye candy.

@@Slesaint17 better image quality and RAW/Prores codecs on the BMPCC 4K for corporate gigs. GH5 will be better for online content and overall camera. I will recommend the GH5 for a easier use camera BUT if you're ready to elevate your filming skills and game... BMPCC 4k is the way. Having both is a goal.
DLE Vision yeah I definitely want to have both ahahaha! I went with the GH5 as I want to be able to use it for run and gun shoots too. My goal is to have the BMPCC4k as well for short films and narratives

If I ever want to film a Netflix series, then I will get the S1H. Yeah, it's a beast that makes the GH5 seem... dinky-ish... but, that price tag, tho! Though I was looking at the lenses and while they are expensive, they're not super high for full frame glass. That crown is still held by the RF lenses. Anyway, makes me want to get an S1H, but I'm not ready to make that kind of investment. I mean, even if I were making daily vlogs, I could easily do that with the GH5 without fear.
Maybe I'll just save my cash and wait for the GH6. MFT 6K, maybe? LOL

I want to try an S1H, but I don't need it.
It's too big to use handheld for long periods, so my C200 comes with me when I can take a tripod.
Its autofocus is unsuitable for gimbal work... My canon EOS R comes out for that.
I use the GH5 and GH5s for travel and handheld work.
The only niche the S1H fills is handheld work {in short bursts) under low light conditions.
Its a very large investment but for what I see as very limited use case.
BUT, I still want one.
If I was to get one, I'd probably sell my GH5s, GH5 & G9... And it would then be my luck for Panasonic to announce a GH6.
I don't think I"ll be taking the plunge, but I'm a little jealous.
I’m a Sony guy, have always been. Huge respect for the GH5, have throughly considered it when I was living in the 6000 series world of Sony. With that being said, the S1H has been such a tease for me. I’m SO interested. I think my biggest issue is the auto focus. With that being said, I use manual as much as I can (which is honestly a lot), as it’s just more controllable and professional. But in run and gun situations, having solid AF makes a HUGE difference for me. I would seriously switch out of the Sony ecosystem if their autofocus was more reliable. Sadly, that’s the deal breaker for me. Everything else from the S1H, including that stupid price tag, is what I want in a “DSLR” style camera. But if I’m getting something of such, I’d love solid AF. If not, I’d just hang tight and buy a used RED.. which still might be worth it nonetheless. Appreciate the insight and solid review/comparison.

Dynamic range, low light and color science are fantastic on the S1H - far ahead of the GH5 which I used before.

Just get a GH5. Most people won't really make use of the S1H, nor will they want to pay a premium for lenses and the body. The GH5 is awesome. ;-)
Just buy the GH5. It’s the best decision on gear I ever made, right ahead of getting a Ronin M gimbal! I shoot many live events, this thing gets great footage and photos for the musicians that often hire me! Here’s the kicker: I shoot 99.9% of my shots on a LUMIX 14mm 2.5F pancake lens and a LUMIX 20mm 1.7F pancake lens! I spent less than $400 on lenses that do most of my work! Why do I use those primes? Because they’re so lightweight for what they can do which significantly increases my gimbal’s battery life and makes it function smoother, and most shots are close up anyways! If you shoot event photos the 6k(18mp) photo mode will have you falling in love because it shoots a 6k video at about 14fps and you go back in after the event and go through each clip frame by frame in the camera and save the perfect shot with no one blinking and everyone looking just right. My only regret was that I bought two Nikon’s before buying one of these!
Sometimes you spend the house and you can't go home. The S1H lets you dance with the devil. The GH5 is still brilliant. But the S1H is sublime!

But a fair game comparison was take GH5s vs S1H... both were designed for video.

I can get the GH5 or BMPCC 4K for $1300 and the 6K is 2500 and do Prores for FCPX. Right I’m still shooting with my beloved G7. Then again I’m a filmmaker so that’s a difference.
I totally agree! It is an investment to consider carefully. However, I couldn't resist buying one. And I really do not regret it. With sunny weather conditions, I find myself struggling alot with v-log exposure though. I film manually and leave the ISO at lowest native 640. I concentrate on the highlights which do not exceed 80 ire on the wfm. Theoretically they could even touch the 85 ire bar. I still have the impression that my footage is way to bright. Do you have any insights on that part?
So, as someone who is never going to sell content to Netflix, what advantages do you see for your content to investing the extra $1,600 for this over the S1? They have the same sensor, same V-LOG, and if you dont have a need for the 400mbps codec the same 10 bit 422 codec at 150mbps. It just seems like the features you are really excited about here are present in the mucher cheaper S1, just without the Netflix hype.
So what is the S1H like as a stills camera? I use a GH5 for video but use Nikons for photography and wondering whether to swap the Nikons for an S1H but the D4s is great for sports and wildlife photography with decent AF and 11fps. Or maybe wait and see if a GH6 arrives this year.

It is worth it IMO, as it's a true cine cam in a mirrorless body. It's one of the few cameras Netflix approves as an A cam on their production, the second cheapest is $10,000 for body alone.
However, for those who can't afford it, the GH5 is still amazing

What are you using for Lenses? I saw the Sigma Lenses but they don’t have stabilization so I don’t know how well it will work with the 5 axis on the S1H

Jufloca yea , S1H has 2nd native iso of 5000 in V-Log which is twice that of 2500 in the GH5s.
Gh5s sacrificed the photographic aspect, whereas the S1H is a full blown hybrid camera.

Video footage quality and appearance changes between different cameras - are there any drone cameras which look/can look as good as the GH5 or Sony Rx100 footage? Thinking about continuity...
It's not just the price of the body that holds back the S1H, it's also the price of great lenses. M4/3 has plenty of high value lenses. For people who would have to start from scratch with lenses by moving to this format, that's hard to justify
I just got an EOSR to vlog with and I have a 1Dx2 for more serious work. You make a great case for the S1H. As Michael L. said, you are evil my friend ;) How do you think the S1H compares to the 1dx? Is it miles better for cinema? Could I adapt my EF lenses (otherwise it's a deal breaker)...Or I could maybe find a used Ursa mini but would probably cost double...Arrrgh, technology is moving so fast sometimes I feel like I'm just working to pay for the new gear. Guess I'm addicted, ha!

Unfortunately I already have way too much money invested in EF lenses. There is an adapter by Novoflex but it's not confirmed that the AF will work with the S1H + adapter + Canon EF lenses.
There is also a sigma adapter but I’m not sure how well the autofocus works with canon glass.

I’m currently conflicted. I really like the GH5 (like a lot) so I don’t really see the big upgrade in specs. But the image quality is so good on the S1H it’s shocking me every day I use it 🤯
I've used the Sigma MC-21 adapter with a Sigma 50mm (Canon EF mount) and as of right now there is no AFC, only AFS - and with all current firmware updated it's still a pretty slow performer, IMO. Does not work as well today as the MC-11 (e-mount to canon EF) adapter works, even with the same lens. Just my experience.
Autofocus will suck no matter what lens you're using. They still use contrast based AF.

Panasonic Gave us years of affordable Cameras unlike all other makers, About time they made some good money so that they keep on giving us the amazing features and quality stuff we took for granted, and the S1H is still cheaper and better than the opposition

especially nice summary. I'm soon restarting my ogauge model train youtube channel shortly. very hard to find the best camera equipment for filming trains & layouts. very disappointed in videos on my sony a7r3 video focus wander, sony rx100 with 5 minute 4k overheats.Thought the many lenses from mirrorless would add a lot in videos vs camcorders much easier focus in videos. trying ax100, ax700 camcorders now. Most train guys know model trains, but not cameras, what lenses, audio, lighting, tripods, camcorders. I like model trains, have a large train collection in boxes, but knowledge of what to use when is very, very difficult to find/learn and expensive. Wish you could connect & share your knowledge. I also have a canon 60d, 7d, and g20. please help. My train videos will be mostly shot from 1.5 ft out to 6 feet. you video makes me wish I had started with a gh5 or g9. I have no friends in either cameras or model trains for sharing or learning.
I think I would have invested the cash you put in the S1H instead of buying it. Considering the type of video work you do, the GH5 is a perfect camera for your CZcams production. Each to his own.

I’ve been curious if the S1H or BMPCC6K matches to canon color better. I’ve been back and forth between these two cams to fill in the gaps that exist between my c200 on the higher end and my EOSr’s on the lower end.

I got both cameras as well. When i record 5.9k footage off the S1H on a ninja 5 ssd card the footage wont play back on my computer nor on adobe , I just got the S1H can you tell me what im doing wrong?

I just got the GH5. Now I need a new computer to be able to edit videos smoothly without wanting to throw the computer out the window. The S1H system is way too expensive of a camera ecosystem for me.
