    Just found your channel, so informative and enjoyable.
    Great job you're doing here!
    If you have the time to answer this question:
    If you were in my situation: owning an A7iii and some gear for basic productions, events, weddings, etc.
    Seeking for upgrades in quality, future "proofing" my equipment.
    What would you recommend? 8 bit and 1080p seems not sufficient anymore and I don't want to have the same quality as the masses. (of course story is king, but we're talking about gear here)
    I do rely on autofocus pretty often for some of my fast paced videos, those are mainly for events though.
    I'm trying to push my work more towards productions, which eliminates the need for autofocus.
    Maybe I should start investing in Canon lenses so switching to another brand is made easier in the future?
    What (camera) would you recommend for me at the moment?
    What is wisdom?
    Budget: 3,5k + willing to sell the A7iii / save up more

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey Alon, thank you for the kind words.
      First, I would surely say invest in EF lenses... Sigma ART has the best value for money by far out there. I use EF lenses on all my cameras: RED-BM4K-A7III-S1H. Adapter now are very good that they act almost as good as native lenses.
      As for the camera, since autofocus is out of the equation now. I would say go for either BlackMagic 4K + Accessories, or invest more if you can and get the S1H.
      The BM4K's drawbacks are mainly battery life, no tilt screen, no IBIS or usable autofocus and it's M4/3. Which can be fixed with A battery grip with battery, an external screen, a gimbal or a pair of steady hands and some focus practice and a speed booster to make it more of a Super 35 Crop. Here's my personal kit: kit.co/THE-DP-JOURNEY/bmpcc4k-my-fav-kit
      But everything else about it is awesome! So you need to buy some accessories to bring it to the perfect working configuration.
      The S1H... Is great out of the box, you just need a couple of extra batteries and cards and you're set. You can get a cage to turn it into a full fledged Cinema cam. And based on Pana, they will release the RAW recording in Q1.
      Here's a link to the setup I have. kit.co/THE-DP-JOURNEY/s1h-kit-on-a-budget.
      Hope that answers your question buddy.

    The 5.9K FF mode you mention at 9:45 is actually 10bit not 8bit?... it is 4:2:0... but I did my own tests and found the colour detail and noise is much better using this mode and then downsampling in post. There is almost no reason to ever shoot 4K 4:2:2 as the colour resolution is worse!... (shooting 5888x3312 gives 4.8mp colour resolution in 4:2:0 as against 4.1mp in 4K 4:2:2). In fact... why is it ever better to crop in camera rather than capture everything you can and crop in post, using a better processor?

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  Před 4 lety

      Hey, yes I did already rectify the 8bit thing in the description.
      I honestly didnt see that the 6K is "much better" at all.. there's almost identical. Can you explain which area did you find that better?
      As I mentioned, both res have the same starting poitn of 5.9K so they both would theoretically have the same color resolution, even though I think the 4:2:2 being oversampled in camera would have a better bayer conversion since the camera knows it's sensor Vs FCPX for example that estimates. Even if you use Nule or Davinci to choose the method of oversampling, they're all guessing as they don't have the exact camera bayer pattern.
      The reasons why 4K is better:
      1- 422 Vs 420.. better in chroma key
      2- 5.9K is Long GOP, which is super sluggish, with that res it's more of a nightmare even on high spec machines
      3- 5.9K doesnt shoot above 30fps

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot Před 4 lety

      @@THEDPJOURNEY It’s totally counter intuitive, and not the result I was expecting, but the reason I thought the 6K 4:2:0 was better is simply because I tested it with a colour resolution chart, and found (to my big surprise) that it looked noticeably better than the 4K at 4:2:2. I included the results in a video review I made with this camera before knowing exactly why the 4:2:0 was looking so much better… it wasn’t until someone explained the maths to me that it all became clear!
      With 4:2:0 colour subsampling you have half the horizontal colour resolution and half the vertical resolution, which with 5.9K (5888x3312) is 4.8mp. When shooting 4K (3840x2160) and 4:2:2 colour subsampling, you have half the horizontal resolution with the full vertical resolution… which is just 4.1mp. The 4:2:2 isn’t better in chroma key if you are working in 4K… there’s more colour resolution in the downsampled 6K!
      The colour subsampling is all happening after the bayer filter and is used to compress the file size of the image data, so that’s not an issue here.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  Před 4 lety

      I gotta test that myself to see. Honestly I already have both footage with the color chart, and after playing with it I haven’t seen that obvious difference you’re referring to.
      In all cases, the other 2 points are also good to consider when choosing 4K over 6k

    Sweet graphics in this video! But I think your super35mm numbers might be a bit off. 24.89 x 18.66mm is the 4:3 frame size of motion picture film. A super35/APS-C crop of a FF 3:2 stills sensor is typically smaller. I Would think the super35 mode would be more like 23.7 x 15.8mm in 3:2 and 23.7 x 13.3mm in 16x9 no? I would also guess that in super35 anamorphic mode it uses this 15.8mm-ish height and in pixel by pixel anamorphic is would be around 14.8mm tall.

    The S1H is a definitely a game changer for professional video production. The camera is really a full-blown 6K cinema camera in a mirrorless body that exceeds the capabilities of anything else in it’s class. For video, television, and film production I can confidently say it offers more bang for the buck of any video camera ever made. Here’s a link to my review of the camera and a trailer for a the 4-hour S1H master class I have produced that can help new owners get the best results with their camera. czcams.com/video/GhZP14WVCn0/video.html

    3:09 - where did you get these numbers from? There is no mode in the S1H that uses 24.89mm x 18.66mm. Those numbers give a 4:3 ratio, and yet your graphic is 16x9. 18.66mm is a theoretical number of a 4:3 crop based on 4 perf film, but the s35 modes in the camera are either 16x9 which is about 13mm tall, not 18.66mm, or their 4:3 mode which is 15.63mm in 4:3 and 14.75mm tall in PIXEL/ PIXEL 4:3. The whole upset with this camera's anamorphic modes has been that it doesn't reflect the 4 perf standard gate. I just wanted to point out this error as no one else seems to have caught it, but it should be at the least obvious that your numbers give a 4:3 image and the crop you're displaying is 16x9. Otherwise this was great, and thanks as always for the hard work.

    I am a GH5s user, want to switch to the S1H once i get the money!!
    There is a problem with my GH5s that I would love to share with you if you have a minute.
    I have been posting this problem in many different forums and groups and no one has a clue what is going on!
    Everytime my camera displays my memories are full, when i plug it to my computer the memory still has lots of free space in it. What is concerning me is that it looks like there is a fixed percentage for it.
    If i use a 64 memory I still have 25gb free
    If I use a 32gb memory I have 12gb free
    If I use a 128gb I have 50gb free!
    Lots of free space and unable to use!
    Also what I noticed is that, when shooting for instance in: 4k60p 150mbps I have around 55 minutes available, once I get the memory "full" or "0 seconds available" I put the shots one next to another in my computer and I only have around 35min of footage.
    One more thing to point out, I have tried brand new and old memories and it happens with all of them, my old GH4 and Canon 60D are able to complete the memories, leaving around 500mb available.
    Thank you for reading! I am myself of a troubleshooter and tried everything + what people told me in the forums and nothing has changed, this is so weird!

    The question from here is whats changes with detail and color fidelity?
    Assuming these have the same white balance, why does the 4k have a different color? Which is more 'accurate' because one has to be more so correct then the 2.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  Před 4 lety

      hey Chris, first you need to know that FF has a wider Field of view, meaning it sees more than S35 and PP. So I assume the confusion you have is because when i matched the magnification to 800%, the FF image looked smaller. And the key yo any comparison here is to have constants and check what changes. So with 800% magnification, noise looks smaller. And the reason is that it's sampling the whole frame rather than a portion of it. The color part is because just like pixel resolution, you have color resolution, since the sensor has RGGB photocells, if you samply more colors from th full sensor, you get more color resolution than if you sample part of the sensor in S35.

    Great video. One thing I have been told about Sony sensors is that many of them have 5k-6k full pixel readout oversampling and can scale that down to 4k, in-sensor at the A/D conversion output. This means your image processor can take in a standard 4k signal that was already scaled at the sensor collection. This is one of the great features of modern EXMOR sensors that takes the workload off any image processor. Sony does that job for you on chip. Sony's clear image "zoom" even does oversampling and smoothly slides a windowed scan row by row and shapes its over sampled readout as it crops in and out. Again, the image processor doesnt need to worry about it because it's getting "normal" 4k all day long. I don't think Sony has ever licensed it's Clear Image Zoom patents to any outside Sony sensor buyer yet.

      Thanks Cliff for the info, are you talking about the sony mirrorless? Like the A7 or the more cinema lineup? Like the FX9

      @@THEDPJOURNEY Yes, any camera that uses modern Sony EXMOR sensors. Although not confirmed yet, the S1 and S1H appear to use a Sony IMX410 or 410 variant.

      You don’t really have a choice. Otherwise you’ll get a ridiculous solid black vignette. Like looking through a tube
