Dragon Ball Z Budokai Songs That Sound Familiar | Plagiarism or Inspiration??

- Today we are talking about a popular subject! Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1, 2, and 3 all share one common aspect when it comes to the soundtracks, and that's the fact Kenji Yamamoto was fired because there were multiple instances of suspected plagiarism. If you agree or not isn't the question, the only person who's opinion mattered was Kenji's boss, and he decided it was enough to fire him. This is not something that was taken lightly. But now join us in our Oddly Familiar episode of DBZ Budokai!

This Generation needs to be disciplined and honor what Copyright Infringement and Plagiarism means.
We need to be more strict, bringing this back.
What's most confusing to me, as someone who knows even a bit of composition, is that Kenji has skill. In the tracks that aren't outright stealing of melodies and harmonies and shifting them a few semitones, he has a grasp of music theory in his own compositions that aren't outright stolen. The Smoke on the Water one is definitely not straight theft, but the question is then why he didn't just make his whole soundtrack at that level of INSPIRATION rather than theft?
My guess is, being the composer for so many games and series of DBZ must be exhausting. Even a great OST composer's catalogue has material that is reused often.
@@shadowmover63 guess that's good.
Or maybe he just wanted to... Share how that music sounds with the players...
@@shadowmover63 Meh, even when he was tasked with composing _one_ insert theme for the series, he used not one, not two, but _three_ songs from the *same* album to make it.
He was never a true composer and there’s no equivalency between him just arranging and actual OST composers quoting either themselves or others (while still having their own unique signatures).

The "Game" by Disturbed was played in the DBZ Cooler's revenge movie, So it was definitely an inspiration..
But when did that DBZ movie came out? Was it before or after Bodukai 3?
@@Gamedraco Coolers Revenge came out in 91. The dub with The Game came out in 2002. Budokai 3 came out in 2004.
@@zeroattentiongaming820 That is ridiculous.
The Game was in the english dub done by Funimation, the choice of that song had no correlation with Toei's original soundtrack and yamamoto had no connection with it since their soundtrack was completely different for the Japanese dub.
@@phillip9579 very true but taking inspiration from the song that's in the movie of the anime game your working is considered inspiring.. just like how bleach opening 13 is the same as bleach soul resurrection with a bit of a different tone. that one gets a pass.
Pretty sure Yamamoto was under the impression this was still the 80s, where you could get away with shit like this
Yeah, it was a different time, and when it's 8-bit bleeps and bloops it's a lot harder to catch, these were in CD Quality and were basically instrumental covers lol
@@uncannyx You could say the same thing about the 16-bit era somewhat too. Everything changed once games went 3D in the mid and late 1990's, and especially with the PS2's debut in 2000 which was the first system that could truly handle a CD quality soundtrack.
Agreed. You could definitely get away with it during the 16-bit era. I think you could even get away with it on the N64, but... I think PS1 is where it really went to the next level, once that CD quality came, people had higher expectations and didn't really want bleeps and bloops
To be fair, he did get away with it until whenever Kai was being made.
Somebody in my country did this fairly recently, for major productions too. But i think he was caught because it suddenly stopped.
Used music from VERY POPULAR AAA games and got paid for it. To non-gamers its just a random beat but to the initiated you begin wondering why the FFXIII battle theme is blasting in the middle of a toothpaste ad.

It's funny that Funimation used Disturbed's "The Game" for one of the movies.

I think the reason Kenji knew of Stratovarios is because they're super popular in japan he probably caught one of their shows
Some of these sound like he was intentionally trying to make lawyer friendly versions of songs but it didn't quite work out.
All but 8 and 3 as 8 and 3 he did not even try to make them sound different at all.
I had no idea that so much of the original soundtrack was ripped off. My favorite was 'Challengers' from Budokai 3. Now i want to listen to the real song it ripped off.
Also you make a great point about the number one slot. Why not at least take from DBZ anime music? Heck even the american Bruce Faulcuner music had some great tracks for the show that could have been reworked for the games.
I think I might have enough for a second DBZ episode, but it will include more than just Budokai songs. I found some songs from other DBZ games!

It was not much of a stretch once I found out the name of the song was Smoke on the Water. I knew its iconic riff long before I knew the name of it.

The soundtrack of the budokai and clearly the best of all, it's a pity that you can never have it in the games because of this plagiarism case.
Imagine a fight of Xenoverse with Budokai 1 "Challenger" background, the fighting will be so much more epic.
@Pro Token420 How could it introduce you to the bands they were plagiarized from if no credit was given?
@@salj.5459 because of videos like this
A lot of video game composers did this back in the day for many video games.
However, it is worth noting that they at least had permission to base their work on the material they based their tracks on.
Considering Yamamoto got fired, that is clearly not the case for his works.
It’s not that they had permission. It’s that video games weren’t that mainstream so nobody cared. Now they make millions of dollars so copyright kicks in.
@@YophiGames You're right actually, I looked into it more over time and a lot of composers got away with it, no permissions or anything. One of the most famous examples was with the classic DooM soundtrack, composer Bobby Prince (who also happened to be a lawyer) was sure id was going to get sued for having him compose music based on songs from various metal artists, but they got off clean on that one.
But yeah no way that could be pulled off today.
@@boreasthenortherndragon6217 That's what bugs me about this. He didn't do anything that anybody else wasn't doing before. But because Dragonball Z is a famous franchise that makes money, now all of a sudden, it's a crime. If copyright is only a crime when you make money, it's sort of a double standard you know?
Not defending Budokai of course. As much as I love the renditions, it's still wrong to take credit for these. I think they should have paid the money, credited the artists, and said the music was inspired by them. All of this would have been avoided.
@@boreasthenortherndragon6217let’s not forget mgs 1 theme plagiarism
It's actually becoming quite rare to find awesome channels like this
Smoke on the Water is a stretch but some of them really are ripped off. Especially Stratovarius and Disturbed ones. Also, Black Sabbath is not only Iron Man but the song Black Sabbath was also ripped off.
Reminds Me Of Captain Ginyu
Nah I *totally* hear it. It's really not a stretch; exact same cadence, same tempo, same key. Only differences are that the drum groove is a bit different and some of the notes from the main riff are mixed up a bit, but those are the same notes and everything in a very similar sequence. It's not *as* egreguous as the others, but it's really close enough.
This is getting out of hand...
Now there are two of them...

You know; It's almost like he intentionally wanted to get caught. Lmao
He had the egregious braggadocio to steal from absurdly popular songs without flinching for over 20 years.
started cracking up when i see goku flying to september by earth wind and fire
It was a trip down memory lane watching this and listening to all the Budokai songs, plagiarized or not, I grew up with all these songs. Great video!
Damn...most of the the tracks shown here are effectively instrumental covers, but in fairness, #5 and #3 feel like a medley of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath riffs.
I would agree, #5 and #3 seem to have a few different inspirations. The 'Iron Man' one for example, only the last part of the riff is Iron Man
I think #3 and #5 both have remnants of the pieces I named, but I also think there were multiple influences. Like the Iron Man one for example, it's some other guitar riff for almost 75% of the riff, and then out comes Iron Man all of a sudden... If Kenji Yamamoto didn't have so many blatant rip-offs, I think one could argue against it and look passed those 2 .... but considering the fact he has made a career on this, I can't defend it, and I heard the riff in there, even if it was only a portion of it.
For the Iron Man one, I thought a good chunk of that ripped off elements from For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Metallica, and shifted towards Iron Man at the end. I'm baffled as to why he would choose to steal from such highly successful tracks. Yes, they all sound great, and fit nicely within the game, but they're far too noticeable, and can be recognized almost immediately.
Smoke on the water was a big stretch, but everything else is pretty similar...
#3 was definitely a rip off or Iron Man, but also (and very obviously) another Black Sabbath song that is named after the band itself, Black Sabbath. Prove me wrong.
Rip off of Iron Man*
I think you're right. Doesn't really sound like Iron Man to me, except maybe the later part of the clip, but absolutely sounds like Sabbath.

Tha-thats not smoke on the water
Whenever I write songs for various personal projects, I sometimes notice that sometimes, certain melodies/leitmotifs I make sound similar to other existing melodies/leifmotifs. I've decided to refer to this phenomenon as "Subconcious Inspiration".
I'm sure it's probably self-explanatory, but a basic description of it is when you are writing a song and you come up with a melody without realizing that it's similar to a song you may like, have stuck in your head, etc.
A bit of an example of this is this one song I heard in a video. It had a short 23 note melody that I can't describe in words. Later, when I remembered the song, I kinda remembered it wrong, and it ended up sounding like a jazzy version of that song. Boom. I had a melody that later became a reoccurring leitmotif for the soundtrack of something I'm working on.
I've done this at times. Found myself playing something off the top of my head, only to realize it's part of a song I know or built off such.
This is a pretty different case, it was repeated over years and a lot of these songs were hilariously popular
Unintentionally subconsciously copying a melody, theme, or rhythm is one thing. But when you copy all of them together along with similar instrumentation it becomes very hard to say it was unintentional.
what you say reminds me of something that Aphex Twin once said/wrote in an interview, heavily paraphrasing but he stated how he’ll often think up melodies or progressions, and because he’ll come back to such ideas in his head a while later, he often thinks - is this familiar because I’ve heard it somewhere else? Or did I really think that up? Difficult to discern between the two sometimes, especially if it’s just a tune in your mind
If it's too close than changing the key is an easy way to make it sound different enough to not matter.
Me starting out: "C'mon man, I'm sure it was all a heavy coincidence."
Me after hearing Black Sabbath's Iron Man: "Ok yeah, he don' F-ed up." 😆
Especially when it wasn't just iron man, there were like 3 ozzy songs there
Earth Wind and Fire ! Now i'm just baffled ! Shocking !

So, they find that he was stealing music, but fired him AFTER the third game? Nice work, Bandai...

they actually discovered that while he used some of his plagiarized songs on dbkai. in 2011. this was unprecedented. they had to replaced the songs from all the video games he worked on on the later released and the songs from the blu ray of dbkai. this is ridiculous. but the guy has good taste in music though, lol

Iron Man was so obvious.

@@uncannyx that was the only one I figured on my own
In my opinion that one's kind of a stretch. I can hear it, but the dots have to be connected first.
That’s one of the least egregious one last tbh
If Iron Man was obvious here so every Doom Metal band have plagiarized Black Sabbath. Because that's a typical riff in Doom Metal guys.
The one they did with Smoke on the Water doesn't sound exactly the same initially, but if you listen carefully you'll notice that the timing of the notes was changed a bit, probably in an attempt to hide they stole it.
Good job with the video! This subject sure is fascinating. I was in complete shock when I first discovered the September knockoff; and then for the sake of having fun, I tried to do a mashup of it with the actual vocals from September and, with some speed corrections, it syncs very well since the similarities remain beyond the sample of the video.
It's *scary* how similar they sound. It's like he almost didn't try to conceal it.
Hmm. Well the Smoke on the Water one was off enough that you could say it was simply inspired by. The Iron Man one actually sounds like a mixture of the self-titled song, Black Sabbath, and Iron Man. So I guess its sort of original to combine those (technically). Most of the rest are much closer, but the RHCP one and the one from Cowboy Bebop... kinda indefensible. Overall, this dude was definitely guilty of some plagiarism, but I don't think all of the songs are counts of that offense.
I thought that too! It's not iron man, sounds like Black Sabbath for sure
There's a couple songs i feel are different enough but there are some that are too similar to argue for, this controversy did introduce me to stratovarius so in a way I'm glad people found out
Naw...you can tell what he was going for. "Maybe i should tweek this one so it's not a complete 100% rip like my other ones" lol just 75% this time.

And.... Bobby Prince was told what to do on Doom, this DBZ guy just went off and stole it all on his own lol
@@uncannyx And having listened to the Doom and Doom 2 soundtracks, there are a few original pieces and/or different takes on the songs they are based on unlike this DBZ guy which stole practically 100% of all his work.

It was ass.
Smoke On The Water and Night of Tempest are played in a different key but they do share some notes making them similar. Besides that not only is the pattern different, the chords are different. Night of Tempest plays 1st and 5th power chords with the exception of one 5th and base chord while smoke in the water is 1st and 4th. The second finger isn't used in Smoke On The Water. Inspired by Smoke On The Water? Maybe. But honestly a lot of early 70's metal sounded like this. This could just as easily be from a Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin, or Judas Priest song. Hell other Deep Purple songs used this same bluesy type riff in many different keys. Case and point, Fairies Wear Boots from Sabbath or Space Truckin' from Deep Purple.
For Budokai 3, there's a song named "Flight in the Dark Side" which is one of the exploration theme songs in Dragon Universe. That song is a rip off of Marilyn Manson's "Antichrist Superstar".
CZcams with the stupid ass copyrights... THIS IS EDUCATIONAL
In Budokai 3, the song that plays inside Buu (Powerful Man from the Darkness) starts with a guitar riff that sounds very similar to the guitar riff heard in X-Men Legends on the aircraft carrier level. Although, I don’t think I would call it plagiarism as it was one guitar riff and both games probably used the same music making software that had that riff already made up. But probably not. I don’t really know, it was just something I noticed.
Haha guess i wasnt the only one who noticed back when I played it. It seemed so out of place lol
When I was listening to the cowboy bebop sound track couple weeks ago, and that song came on, I was in shock since I remembered years ago that DBZ budokai music got copyrighted lol
7:20 CZcams: Not if I have anything to say about it, and I do
Challenges was the most obvious offender
There's a lot Remixes in CZcams for the song "Challengers" (Theme 4 of Budokai) with High and Low from Statovarius, and sound actally pretty good. The first song of the list was my favorite, and still be my favorite but now i know is stolen from Cowboy Bebop.
That Number 4 was my jam. Sad that no future releases will ever have it again.
This Dragon Ball Z Budokai Episode has left me firmly convinced that Mewtwo from Pokemon is for certain based royally on Frieza from Dragonball Z even more than I already noticed since my comment on the character special. The Dragonball Z Anime ran in Japan from 1989 to 1996 looking at the dates before the main part of the episode. The very first Pokemon games where Mewtwo debuted came out in Japan in 1996, and Mewtwo remains one of the most well known and used Pokemon characters since. I cannot defend this similarity at all now knowing these dates, and how extremely similar both are right down to the color palette.
I agree with you. My friend and i have talked about it a bunch of times.
Don't forget that Dragonball also took a lot from Jackie Chan, Superman, Bruce Lee, journey to the West.
@@oh2446 mostly Bruce lee and journey to the west

@@TheAres117 Z took more from Superman than the original DB did.
It sucks that you had to cut Smoke on the Water, this is as fair use as it gets. Great work in the video. Most tracks are downright plagiarism, but there's a couple of them that could arguably be just "inspiration".
Kenji Yamamoto created a large amount of amazingly memorable DBZ compositions for the earlier SNES/Saturn/PlayStation Butouden games, including Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout. It's really sad that he couldn't keep it up past 2000 and ended up going this path.
Yeah that's the sad part. He created very good original compositions for the earlier games, he was talented, had a taste and know-how in fusion-jazz/rock. At least you could say even with the plagiarised works he was still a good arranger, eh. But yea, it's just disappointing
Even those earlier games were plagiarism.
One of them even ripped off Kenji Kawai’s The Red Spectacles main theme.
@@gespenst1329 This is disappointing to read. Just heard it. It's Gohan's Butouden 3 theme. That explains why the likes of Vegeta and Z Goku got Butouden 3 remixes as their Ultimate Battle 22/Final Bout tunes, but Gohan got an entirely new track.
Kenji Yamamoto is an example of a CZcamsr who got a Copyright Strike.
Fun Fact: the Song that Ultimatum is plagiarizing, The Game by Disturbed, was actually used in the Dub Soundtrack of Cooler’s Revenge!
#4 and #1 are from Budokai Tenkaichi as well aren't they?
Nah the soundtrack for theirs was different
@@Wil401Gaming those songs are definitely in both Budokai and Budokai Tenkaichi
you're right
I'mma be honest...
Powerful Man From the Darkness was a fire remix.
There's lots of comparison videos of this situation on CZcams, but this takes the cake. You absolutely tore him apart. You mauled him.
I'm so glad someone finally made a video about this topic
I always thought it was odd a Japanese made game had such an American rock themed soundtrack.
If you play enough Dynasty Warriors you'll hear lots of music like this
@@krimsonk-9478 Musou games are certainly heavy on rock.
Many Japanese games have this style of music
@@fightfannerd2078 Exactly.
Coolers revenge has Disturb's music in it.
I have the DVD, it's a beast movie ! Very sick !
Intense Fight Burning Fight Violent fight has Pantera in it iirc
Dbz Budokai 3's 'Move forward fearlessly' is also a rip of Stratovarius' 'Glory of the World'
And in Burst limit 'Hatred at 2 power' is a rip of Bullet for my Valentine's 'Just another Star'
The crazy thing is that most of the music he ripped was either from 1 band or released just a few years before the games.
I found a good one on an old game called Zak McKracken (dev. by Lucasart for PC), once in the airport zone, you can actually hear a slowed down version of Living on a Airplane by John Denver. Even the developpers admitted it several years later
its how most of these songs are actually better versions of the original
I still find it odd that someone can own a series of music notes.
It all comes down to $. Selling something that someone else created and are owed royalties to
There's a difference between playing a series of music notes you know from somewhere else for fun, and using a series of music notes you know from somewhere else for the sake of profit and claiming that it's your work. It's no different from stealing.
Very well made video. Subbed.
Part of both muscle tower and my elastic eye sound fairly similar to Tubular Bells. Primarily the bell sounding part at the beginning. It's not much, but there is a slight resemblance
