IIT Passout in 2023 here. Finally landed job as a graphic designer beczo i wanted to make a career in arts and stuff and getting career started from graphic designing was the most accesible option. I made a lot of mistake applying for jobs in start and that always happens to everyone its a trial and error learning thing. But even when I got most things ie CV, linkedin profile right, it took me in total 1300+ applications over like 6-7 months of continuous applying and only experience being a design intern (which also took several hundred applications to land). In short, applying to job like theres no tomorrow helped me to finally land this one job. pay still isnt great but it is something. So thing for me which helped most in landing job was relentless applying to whatever form i see fit. Just by the sheer law of probability and statistics whatever i did land a job. Applying on jobs without prior experience is absolute nightmare.
I really advice anyone who is reading this to take up multiple intern experiences as well that will help you A LOT in job landing.
    And Good Luck as well.

I love how they're calling a 4 year programming tutorial "Computer Science"
A formal education in computer science matters, it teaches you the general principles that allow you to build something that does not exist yet. What this video calls "skills" in the context of CS is a shallow knowledge of programming and frameworks. Sure, learning this for 4 years will let you make a kickass website, or a good backend service by using JavaScript or a SQL database.
But you can never make said SQL database, or the V8 engine/JS interpreter. You simply have not studied compilers, or queuing theory, or threading and deadlocks in detail. This is what real CS is.

Sadly the problem is that two wrongs are going to make a right. None of the ones studying in most of the colleges are taught concepts seriously so they are neither 'engineers' nor deep programmers. Colleges are producing trained technicians for IT companies, that too bad ones. Now these skill shops are going to make money by exploiting the unskilled grads who have no job offers.

My background:- Goa, currently 2nd year student in Engineering College (not renowned),
middle class, had a low end laptop in the house.
My story :- during covid started learning python and programming languages as hobby and it grove into a passion, And today I applied for an internship (unpaid) for backend engineer and got selected, I did this for to gain experience and nobody in my college is as skilled as me, why I am sharing this because whatever it is told in video is absolute truth. Work on your passion, make good projects, And to be honest I never knew I could build a career in it, I code because it makes me feel alive and it feels cool, I kinda like addicted to it. So Find a passion or a field to get started.

At the interview they were clearly a bit disappointed as soon as I mentioned that I am here to grow and learn skill and after the bond period is over if I get a better opportunity I would definitely move to that... TCS wants skilled cheap labour bit also expect them to destroy their prime years 21-30 with then at the most cheapest salary possible... I have background at frontend development and AIML but at interview the manager was not even aware what Next js is... The TR had to explain him about that .... If the managers don't even know what a candidate is taking about how does it make sense that those guys are sitting there and deciding in few minutes the most important moments of a candidate....obviously as fresher we don't have more experience then them but are rather far ahead in terms of skills and tech knowledge... Now just waiting for final email.... But still planning out to start freelancing rather than this slavery.

There's one more crucial aspect of education: research. If we solely focus on job placement, we neglect research and development (R&D). Let's consider this video: everyone might get a job initially, but eventually, demand and supply will stabilize, leading to a surplus of skilled workers and fewer jobs. Therefore, an education system that prioritizes R&D would be more beneficial.
Secondly, while established career paths like video editor and software developer are valuable, our focus shouldn't be limited to them. People should be encouraged to build, not just software, but also hardware. Exploring platforms like Arduino and creating medical equipment with it any other things can foster these skills. Because of AI, In future we definitely need people who are skilled in hardware rather then software of any other creative field.

      1. people are not made who are studying in iits after cracking jee adv, i will not talk about skill for now.
      2. If a company is new then hiring iitians help to improve their name in market or getting funding.
      3. people on top position are generally iitians so offcoruce they will prefer their college more, and iitans can get connection to land a job very easily like their senior's referal etc. You can't do that very easily as you are not iitan.
      4. Comapny can use the connection or networks of these iitians in future if they needed.
      5. And, IITs have option for internship in college.
      6. And see if company is in critical condition or deadline, these iitians have mindset and harworking nature that helps the companies not to fuck up where they could have.
      7. IITians are generally very good followers, they have followed their teacher during preparation time very hard and if you have opened your company then you just need some people who have experience in that sector and people who will follow that experienced man.
      8. IItians are generally very versatile in nature as compared to any other college students, kisi bhi project me daal do.
      9. Generally freshers don't have much to show in their portfolio, so if they use something like i'm from iit or iim etc helps you a lot
      10. Its easier to manager them as do their work without much warnings, I think so. I have seen some meme or post in social media like hr wrting some warning to its employee that don;t use office internet to scroll instagram or to do time pass in office, i can deferentially say that employee might not iitian

I come from a village in Karnataka, far from any Tier 1 or Tier 2 city, and struggled to form a sentence in English. Desperate for any job, I was trying everything. Then COVID hit. That pause was a game-changer, helping me realize what I truly wanted to do. I wanted a job in the creative field because I love consuming media and writing. During COVID, I spent my time watching movies and writing reviews. I built a blog on WordPress and started posting my reviews, all from my phone, as I didn’t have a laptop.I applied for writer roles everywhere. Someone saw my blog posts and liked my assignment. That was enough for them to hire me, and I landed my first job in the field I genuinely wanted to work in. Every day since has been fun and fulfilling. After landing my first job, I set two goals for myself: improve my English and master writing. I have come a long way since then and continue to enjoy the journey.

My elder brother who is a passout from IIT Roorkee stresses on the fact that if you are confused and have no clue the best thing to do right now is engineering(from a decent college) most of the students don't even end up grabbing a engineering role in a company but a good college is where you'd have like minded people and the resources for extracurriculars clubs allowing you to explore other fields while getting immense security. If you think you can, get into a tier-1/good college then do whatever miss achina siggested us to, if you can't then start it right away.

I run a startup. While hiring freshers, we often find that they have no skills that can be commuted to productive work. Most early stage companies do not want to waste money training a fresher on basic things and established companies have enough experienced people to choose from.
This is how you can break through this chicken egg problem:
      1. Unpaid internships, as awful as they might sound are your golden ticket.
      2. Write to any founder/member of an early stage startup, and offer them free work in exchange of experience.
      3. A lot of founders might make you do unproductive, skill-less work. Leave these organizations asap and find a better one.
      4. Find your calling, try staying in your home city or work from home to save money, upgrade your skills and get experience in your CV.
Note: Any other economy or any other times, I would have suggested against taking unpaid work. But times are desperate in India and unfortunately to out stand insane competition, this is a strategy that always works.
If you bombard 10 early stage startups, I guarantee you at least 2-3 will respond.

My advice to Indians - help each other in education and job as well. Together they can do well. Let there be no competition. Just cooperation and friendship. Let everybody earn enough money to make ends meet.

Okay, I'm not a big shot here. But I did get some jobs good enough to pay the bills without having a college degree to boot. Early on during my college days (I dropped out later on), I used typing software to make sure that my typing speed is good enough. Moreover, I used to read a lot of books, and watched a lot of movies, which helped me with my English.
This ultimately led me towards my first job, which simply required me to write English subtitles for Hindi shows. A place where I could use both the skills.
After that, I read this book called Letting Go of Words to learn the ins and outs of Content Writing, and based on the knowledge, applied at a SME, where I was first hired as a Content Writer, and was immediately promoted to a Content Editor (there's this book called The Elements of Style that helped me in better understanding that role).
I simply wanted a job that helps paying the bills and that's not taxing enough, so that I can comfortably work on my passion (of writing novel).
Lastly, there's this letter exchanging app called Slowly that has greatly helped me with my writing, and is also very fun to use.

Agree completely with showing work. I love electronics and picked my stream because I was genuinely interested. But I couldn't crack exams that were designed around memorising. So I don't have good grades from my undergrad.
But like I said, I was interested in electronics. So I worked on projects, wrote blog posts with tutorials on how to build these. I put code I wrote on github. On my resume, my projects were on page 1. My low grades were on page 2. I don't remember any interviewer looking beyond my project work.
Having said that, there's a big difference between not mugging things and being strong in fundamentals. When I was about to graduate, 3 idiots came out and it really made me antagonize the hard work needed to build a good foundation. I focussed only on the practical. There's a balance needed. Having strong fundamentals is not the same as mugging up a set of facts. It's understanding the basics as if they were second nature.

Finally someone on the internet actually analysed everything and enlightening the next generations. This is really great!!!
I wish all the students know about this before they choose their majors.
All I have seen is, most of the engineering graduates doing IT and various jobs except for the major they studied about.
The best would be to invest less in education and focus more on building required skills and land your job. Nowadays, education is not really affordable. It's getting expensive every year. I mean, who sets the standard for this?
