When I started watching Mr. Kate about 3 years ago (When OMG we bought a house came out), i slowly but surely decided that i wanted to become an interior designer. So i worked my ass off to get into the best school in my country (Lithuania) and now i'm working on getting my degree in the Academy of Arts. So thank you for that xoxo

From a professional Interior Designer's perspective, there HAS to be a distinction between being called an Interior DESIGNER and an Interior DECORATOR since there is no other "Official" title for those of us who have Education Examination and Experience. The term "Interior Architect" is a lot closer to what we professionals do. I went to school for 4+ years for my Architectural degree. I've taken and passed a test, I know structural construction, I know how plumbing works, I know how mechanical systems work in buildings, I can provide drawings for custom stainless steel equipment, I can provide drawings for millworkers to build cabinets and other custom furniture. If you are just someone who has a flair for making pretty things, you are a decorator. Glad you took time to differentiate between the two terms.
Hello! I am in the nursing career path (I am a sophomore) I've been thinking of changing my major to interior design; but I am really confused on how the job works. There is a 4 year college that offers this major, but after that, what happens? How do you get a job? How does the schedule works?
Ines Quintanar exactly!!
@@durazno6897 usually a 4-year accredited program requires an internship at an arch or design firm. After you graduate, you start at the bottom & work your way up! I did not have a "real" job in the design field until 2-3 years after I graduated!
Ines Quintanar dude i’ve been thinking of changing my major from nursing to interior design but i’m scared i might be making the wrong choice and idk i feel so lost in what it is i really want to do 😭
@@badgyal8796 I never said she didn't have talent, just giving my perspective from a professional designer. There are a lot of professional "pillow & curtain matchers" out there. Take care!
As someone who went to school for Interior Architecture sometimes it is really frustrating when people assume they can be an interior designer without much work. While some people do have a natural knack for it, most firms now won't hire someone without a degree unless they have at least a decade of proven experience and an extremely strong portfolio. For example, if Mr. Kate were to apply to a firm, I'm sure she would get the job because she has a thorough self-taught knowledge on the topic and a strong portfolio, but that doesn't mean you can just wake up one day and be a designer.
Not to sound totally horrible, but there are a lot of people who have been studying design for years and years and it's frustrating when people assume all it entails is picking out paint colours and cute furniture. There is a lot that goes into designing a room; budgeting, an understanding of the history of design, art movements, architecture, etc, material study, room layouts, ADA, safety and fire codes, HVAC, basic to advanced construction, plans, RCPs, schedules, orders, etc.
To anyone thinking of studying interior design or architecture, do it! But just remember that it is a lot more difficult to get residential design jobs than commercial or hospitality. Also, when studying, it's not all about what is trendy now. Most designs in school and after probably won't incorporate anything from West Elm's catalog or an unlimited or even high budget. Being an interior designer is usually much more boring than Mr. Kate's life seems to be.
Shelby Van Horn I think it's important to note the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator. Mr. Kate does more of interior decorating. As someone in their Masters for Interior Design. It used to bug me but it no longer does. I guess I just feel bad that people think it's easy and it's not. Its a long road with a long education to be an Interior Designer. Interior Decorator though. I believe a lot of colleges offer 1 year programs.
Nichelle Christine yeah, I can definitely see that. I think a lot lottaf people see what she does and think it is really easy to get into and especially residential is difficult work to find. I really love Me. Kate's work, but I think she is in a very unique situation that most people aren't going to find themselves in. I don't want to discourage people from trying, but it is a competitive field, as all creative fields are, and like you said there's a lot of work involved. :)
Mr Kate is a self taught 'CZcams interior designer' meaning she would not get a job with a professional company in the real world. Young kids look at her and think shopping at Homegoods is all you have to do to be a designer.
I became a photographer because I put my mind to it!! I'm nowhere near as good as I want to be, but whenever it gets really hard I just push through and now I'm booked up all year!
Jasmine I wanna be a photographer too! Good luck!!!
I'm studying Interior Design. The difference is that we will take the ASID board exam to get certified. Once we have those permits we allowed to eliminate or add non-bearing (non structural) walls, stairs, add mezzanines ECT. If a client is feeling unhappy with their house, let's say there's a wall in between the kitchen and the dining room that they hate for it might make their place crowded, and interior decorator will use techniques such as shapes, texture and color to make the wall seem lighter to eliminate that crowded feeling. (ex. paint it white) On the other hand, an Interior Designer has the permits to demolish the wall and give the client and open concept kitchen. Both are very beautiful is just that one is more involved than the other. Also Interior Designers are responsible for those cool and weird shapes that extrude off ceilings or walls in most commercial design. As an interior Designer you may specialize in residential, commercial, hospitality or all 3. Hope this helped a lil more. We also overview how the construction project is going. we work alongside architects and contractors as the voice of our clients and make sure everything is how it was planned.
Im in school for interior design & we barely decorate its all about making floor plans & designing spaces using autocad & revit to please the clients needs. You can either do commercial or residential design plus learn about the building codes for both. We have whole classes about lighting, drafting, autocad/revit/adobe products, and much more. Its a lot of hard work & you need to be driven and passionate about it
Exactly! She is actually a stylist.
OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! This is soo helpful because I'm redoing my bedroom and I finally convinced my parents to let me design it! Whenever I don't know what to do, I just ask myself "what would Mr. Kate say?" and have been using all the videos of rooms you have done as inspiration!
MaiaPosternack Great idea! I should try that too :D
I got to redo my room this summer, and I didn't find out about Mr.Kate until after we finished :( I wish I did before because the wall colors I chose isn't very good...
Yeah you're def more of an interior decorator. A interior designer deals with a lot plans, elevations, section drawings and renovations. Theres a lot of codes involved and its not mood board at all. You are a awesome decorator, I just wouldn't consider that interior design. Its not all paint and furnishing selections.
Skylar T yessss thank you for this. I'm spending tens of thousands of dollars on an interior design degree and it has nothing to do with decorating..
Skylar T I agree . It is illegal to consider one self an Interior Designer in some places if you dont have a license bc you need to know building codes and have tons of experience to earn that title.
Thank you for this comment, interior design is a licensed profession.
Skylar T thank you for noticing the difference. As a licensed interior designer with a BS in interior design, it's hard to help others realize that decorators are not designers. It is not the same thing. FF&E is only a small spectrum of what designers do every day.
Came here to say this. Yep
Ok folks... Two things you need to understand. Interior Design and Interior Decorating are TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! To be an interior DECORATOR, you only need GOOD TASTE. No upper-education or certification. To be an Interior Designer (think Interior Architect) you need at least a 2 year degree or certificate in the field of Interior Design. Then you may join ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) and receive your membership number. Both of which require a degree or certificate. But what does an interior designer learn? We have to know AutoCAD (that's the software program that Architects use to design houses.) We have to learn City and County building codes, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, types of lighting/bulb output, wall placement, Space Planning (That's NOT where furniture goes... it's where things like doors, windows, appliances, lighting are placed. Ever seen someone place an oven in an island across from the fridge and you can't open both at the same time or they will hit each other? How about someone putting the dishwasher to the left of the sink, but you're right-handed and needed it on the right side of the sink?) We use other software today, like Chief Architect Premier, to get exact measurement of your home, enter then into the software and create new layouts, appliance placement, correct lighting over your "workspace." We also can use the same software to put in exact cabinets that actually exist (there is a manufacturer catalog that comes with the software). So if I'm designing your bathroom, in the software I can design a new layout, and even put in that freestanding Kohler tub you've been drooling over. So you see exactly what your renovation will look like. I can put actual tiles in your design that currently exist for purchase. So you see the renderings and get to visualize what it will look like when it's complete. But that's NOT the main purpose for our existence. After I've created a design that you like, I have to create construction documents (previously in AutoCAD but now can be done in Chief Architect). Those huge construction documents are also architectural plans. That tells the general contractor exactly where the sink goes, right down to a 16th of an inch! It tells the plumber where to put the plumbing, and exactly what showerhead I've chosen, and what is required for that finish. I have an "electrical plan" (Reflected ceiling plan) that tells the contractor exactly where to place that light, or "elevations" showing exactly where to put the electrical outlets. If they are in your kitchen, I will need to specify the GFCI outlets that will trip the breaker if water gets in them. Regular outlets would short out. Folks, there is a gigantic difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator. Who do you really want designing that very expensive renovation?
I want to become an interior DESIGNERRRR eeeeeee
It seems like such a cool fun job
Hii… I want to be an interior designer… I had a bachelors degree in science… I don’t know where to begin to be an interior designer..!!

Hi Mr. Kate. I really admire your decor skills and creativity (which i still am working on) but unless you took up a major in Interior design, did your major's thesis, graduated and took an exam for licensing, you aren't qualified to be called an Interior Designer. just an Interior decorator. i hope you don't get offended, but you also might offend other professionals who really worked hard (not to mention our sleepless nights just to pass) to finish their degree. I'm on my 4th year now currently taking up my thesis and it's really freaking hard just to get to 4th year. every work we do is criticized by the professor (starting 1st yr) and it's like we're doing thesis everyday just to defend our design and if its cohesive, practical, budget, eco friendly etc. how it's constructed, the detailing of construction, the materials. Designing is really different from decorating. for one thing,
Interior designers must always
-do floor plans
-do electrical plans
-plumbing plans
-cctv plans
-acu plans
-do 3D planning and modelling for renos and construction work
-moodboards, material sourcing, cost estimate
-a lot of sleepless nights just to edit your clients preferences
-furniture detailing, specifications, costing etc and many more.
and that's only half of it. there's still conceptual designing, application of design theories, history etc.
I hope you take this as a grain of salt. it's not to offend but to inform. You are really talented Mr. Kate. one of my inspirations actually. you have a much brighter future with your creativity if you'll take up a degree in Interior design. it's never too late to learn anyway. God bless you. :)
An interior designer is usually involved with a building project from the beginning, perhaps even working with the architect. His job is to help create functional interior space by understanding how the inhabitants will use each room. He may consider light, sound and other design aspects but is also well versed in building codes and structural considerations. Because of this, in most states, designers need official training and a license.
• An interior decorator isn't involved with the design of the building or the layout of the interior space. He is focused entirely on the furniture, colors, textiles and textures of a room. His job is to capture the personality and style of the residents and express it in their space. A decorator doesn't need any official training to adopt the title.
-According to another Designer
Carolyn Pestano this is a very informative comment and I do know she will handle it maturely. But do realize she addresses a lot of your concerns!! She acknowledges that she is not a certified interior decorator, and understands the difference between a designer and decorator. She also has talked numerous times about the many a late night she and joey stay up and plan, work, and perfect. Your comment was respectful and constructive, but remember to consider the things she did say!!
Good luck and I hope your hard work pays off. You have the potential for a bright future!!!!
Carolyn Pestano Thank you for this. As a design professional, it's important to note that there are differences in the two. I can't call myself an Architect because I have not passed all my exams as of yet. (although I do have 10+ years of experience) My colleagues have gone through a grueling process to pass their NCIDQ exams. That being said, if one has the passion for it... Go for it!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 well said! I'm a first year. It is very difficult already! But I love it ❤️
girl, THANK YOU. I'm in my 4th year as well and working on my thesis project and i COMPLETELY understand and agree with everything you said!
As someone who is getting a 4 year degree in Interior Design, I would just like to say that this is how you would become an Interior Decorator. Designers work with floorplans and codes and have to get accredited by the state they work in, while a decorator gets to pick out pillows and paint colors.
Absolutely loved this video!! Part one was amazing. You worked your ass off for this and it shows!
+Christina Rivera awww thanks Christina! Really appreciate that! 🤗❤
Mr. Kate, In my high school design and fabrication class, my teacher always encourages me and tells me I’m very talented in the course. For one project we had to design a floor plan for a house as an architect and I took my floor plan to another level by adding furniture and designing the interior of the entire house, which wasn’t required, and my teacher presented me with the idea of me becoming an interior designer, which I thought was a pretty cool idea but never thought too much about it. a few months later I found your channel and now I genuinely am considering going in the direction of interior design/decorating as a career and I owe it to my teacher, and to you and Joey, thank you for that!!!
I'm sure someone else said this already, but your definition of interior designer vs. decorator is absolutely incorrect. An interior designer has education, accreditation and a thorough knowledge of legal building codes in the state in which they practice. An interior decorator does not require an education. Both are great but it's like a nurse and a doctor, if you are a nurse you shouldn't call yourself a doctor.
THIS VIDEO CAME AT THE MOST PERFECT TIME!!! Just sitting down to make some mood boards for my production design module tomorrow and I was feeling so overwhelmed that I'd never be the designer I wanted to be. Mr. Kate you are saving me more than you know! I've learned SO MUCH from bingeing on your channel! S/O to a 22 year old creative weirdo in little old IRELAND!!
+Amy Davidson yaaaaas Amy!!! Love and luck to you in Ireland! Can't wait to see what you create! 🦄🔮💡
I don't think a lot of people realise that it's really difficult to constantly be coming up with new things and to be a self taught creative person is much more difficult than it looks. Kudos to you for making it look effortless and for inspiring us to dare to dream. ❤
Love, One of your creative weirdos. 🌈
+Sneha Ganguly thank you so much! It does take a lot of energy to keep surprising yourself. It's a really fun job but every job requires a lot of hard work. Love you Sneha!
I can't believe you replied. I'm ecstatic right now! Thank you so much. I really love your work ❤🌈 I have tried a couple of your DIYs and they worked out brilliantly. The guidance is awesome.
I really wanted to thank you Mr. Kate for actually talking about Interior Designers vs. Interior Decorators and the exams registered Designers take. I'm in my final year of an accredited university so I can take the first part of my exam next summer and I just subscribed to your channel. So many people think that Designers and Decorators are the same and it can be really discouraging when someone thinks all we can do is pick paint colours and furniture when in reality we do so much more. I've noticed a lot of people who run channels on CZcams who do more of the decorating side of the spectrum will call it "interior design" rather than "interior decorating" and that just perpetuates those misconceptions. Again, thank you for actually addressing everything in such a clear way with the whole spectrum of our profession. Much love!
I am currently studying interior design and there is a lot more out there than just residential design! If you want to be a creative weirdo by designing spaces there is a whole world of opportunities! Restaurants, retail stores, hospitals, schools... literally everything has to be designed. Don't be afraid of creative career paths. I promise you, stable careers can be fun :)))
Shout out to commercial interior designers.
I'm gonna pop in and be weird because I majored in Interior Design. I haven't read any comments so idk if it's been said, but there's definitely a more technical definition to being a designer or decorator. Designers deal with floor plans and the actual making of residential/commercial buildings and they have to have a degree because they're dealing with those bigger, more complicated aspects of a building (such as how big a hallway has to be, where the doors go, where lighting goes and the wiring routes and if it will run into other pipes or be in a dangerous spot, etc). Whereas decorators deal with any interior changes or decor that's in a space. Obviously both can decorate, but if you want to be an Interior Designer, you definitely have to go to get a degree. As for decorating, you can get certified for it, but I'm not sure if it's a requirement (it does help others see your professionalism). I hope this helps!
in addition, only a person with an Interior Designer License can present herself as an Interior Designer, if a person only have a bachelor degree in Interior Design she can not present herself as an Interior Designer to paying clients but she can work under the authority of a licensed Interior Designer...what this girl in the video is talking about is just like an interior decorator..or stager...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS! The reason I started mentoring interior designers to start their own businesses by using their own experience is because the existing industry is so secretive and makes the job look cryptic when it really isn't! Pretty much EVERYWHERE around the world (except for some states in the USA) you do not need a license to call yourself an interior designer and the title interior designer is not protected such as that of engineer or architect. Yes if you want to work on commercial interiors I would suggest getting a formal degree, however, they will still require YEARS of practical work experience which can be gained by working on domestic interiors (and for yourself rather than very low wages for someone else)! Love your show, good for you!
Here are some tips for those of you considering the field of Interior Decorating/Design:
First thing first- If you're going into this field know the difference between an Interior DESIGNER and an Interior DECORATOR. You cannot call yourself an Interior Designer without accreditation, in certain States/Provinces you can be fined for this.
Second- you'll never do mood boards for clients if you're professional- you may get the odd client ask for one, but don't go into a meeting with a mood board unless you're in school and or presenting to a large group...It's all about renderings- get to know AUTOCAD or Sketchup Pro.
Know your stuff! I worked for five years in a paint store selling paint, stain, wallpaper, furniture, blinds, fabric, custom drapery etc...It has elevated my ability to give sound advice, and clients respect that and seek me out because of that. I also worked for a year in a high-end tile store, designing bathrooms and kitchens with other designers and retail clients. This taught me a lot about harder textiles- including tile application, trims (Schluter) and what looks good together and what doesn't. It's also super beneficial to have a customer service background. It will only help your career. I find that's where people lack skills, not in design aesthetic, but knowing how to handle clients-specially difficult ones- and build a rapport with your clients.
Learn building codes, and how to read blueprints. Also, I see a lot of Designers/Decorators with really bad math skills- learn how to calculate sqft and how to take measurements. I also find knowing how to calculate yardage required for fabric projects and wallpaper a helpful tool. Its made things easier for me.
You're never going to graduate and be a full-on Designer/Decorator right out of the gate, so you might as well work part-time in a place where you're going to learn practical skills that will only help you in your career. Look at local decorating stores like paint stores, window covering stores, furniture etc.
I also worked in Film as a set decorator, it wasn't glamorous at all- and the days were very long- I wouldn't recommend this path unless you're okay with being married to your career.
I'm 31 now and I spend my entire twenties educating myself and setting myself up for a successful career by continuing with my education even after graduation. Only now am I able to finally work full time (comfortably) as a designer- which is rare in my city.
Those of you looking to start upon graduating, try and get into work with a big builder/contractor company. Oh! And Network, network, network!
Best of luck XOXO
Sarah Kitney Hi Sarah! I was wondering could we somehow chat by email or whatever you’d prefer? I am really interested in what you have to say! Thanks in advance
Thanks. That's really good advice.
When i was a younger, i love to draw the interior of houses. I then discovered other things so i forgot about interior designing. Then earlier this year, i started to recognize this thing again. I saw your channel on my recommended list. I literally watched until 3:00 am like omg. Mr. Kate, thank you so much for inspiring me and helping me find my dream. Continue what you do. I love youuuuu ❤️
As an interior DESIGN student MYSELF I beg you to stop calling yourself a designer just cause it sounds better. You are NOT an interior DESIGNER! You're a decorator!
Tatiana Costa yeah it was irking me too 😭 im also a student
No wonder y'all salty! I guess she's naturally talented and went after her dreams! You could all be like her if you wanted yo but hey!
You'll be doing exactly what she's doing... That makes her an Interior designer. Period
@@_roqui_ that's the thing. We won't be doing the same. Interior DESIGN is not interior DECORATION. There's a lot more to it than decorating a space.
My problem lies exactly in the education of the public who ear her saying she's a designer and believe design is the same as decorating. And for that they won't even consider hiring a designer for the work they need and will go to someone else. Because they don't realize our education isn't on choosing furniture or picking color combinations for their house. It's actual architectural and actual designing of every little detail that goes into making a space. It's solving problems not hiding it and making it look good. I am not criticizing her work, it's as much valid as mine or an architect or an engineer or even the painter and builders. But they're not the same.
@@TatianaCostaAS can you tell us more about it? like what is the main task that interior designers do, that differs from decorators?
I have become unhealthily obsessed with your channel recently. OBSESSED

Thanks :3
Oh so you wanna be an interior designer too well best of luck !
I absolutely love you, your channel, the community and all the things it stands for. However, as an interior designer who did earn a bachelors degree in interior design it feels like a slap at the hard work and money I invested in that degree when someone who isn't professionally educated on codes, textiles, space planning, etc calls themselves an interior designer. I love and respect all creative freedoms and people who are left brained like me...I do think a little respect should be paid to those who are licensed to be a designer. Because technically, unless you have that degree and/or license..you are a decorator - no matter how many clients or how much money you make.
That being said - thank you for being a ray of sunshine and always bringing a smile to your viewers faces. I mean no disrespect, just an honest comment from a long time viewer. ❤
Thank you for sharing this video. By you sharing the experiences you went through and giving us more depth on how Mr. Kate came to be is inspiring. Because you didn't let society place you in a box and continued to do what you felt very passionate about. Just because I went to school for nursing doesn't mean I have to be a nurse my whole life. I can follow my heart and do what I am Passionate about. Thank you
You might want to give more justice to those Interior Designers that go through a whole lot of education (bachelors degree) to become a licensed Interior Designer. Being an Interior Design student myself, we go through a whole process and education to learn more complicated stuff than just furnishing an already existing space. Interior designers are interior architects. There’s a big difference. Interior decorators cannot call themselves interior designers. Interior designers need to have a license to call themselves an interior designer. I’m not sure how an “interior designer” can be self-taught since there are more things to consider than colours, furnitures, finishes.
Just please give more justice to actual Interior Designers. A lot of people nowadays degrade Interior Designers because they are often mistaken for a profession that just chooses colours, furniture, finishes, etc., when in fact they do so much more than just dressing up an already existing space.
I'm getting the feeling that you're now just getting to know Kate... She's wonderful at what she does! She knows what looks good on a space and sees the concepts behind her designs. She's not the typical "interior designer wannabe" because she takes in consideration the feel of the space that she'll put her hands on. She puts in consideration different perspectives and different styles.
I don't see a problem with her calling herself a professional interior designer too because she identifies to what she defines as a "professional interior designer".
If your problem with Kate is how she doesn't credit the hard work of interior designers who actually have a degree, then I gues the only logical thing to say to you is to chill out. Kate never mentioned that it was easy to do what interior designers with a degree does on a daily. She never mentioned that she's much more hard working compared to interior designers with a degree? The video title says it all... this is a story of how SHE became an interior designer, not how low this profession is. Don't feel offended by Kate because of a video she made about how she came into the profession, instead, focus your mind and be the best interior designer!
Some people are natural at what they do and some have to pass exams and need a piece of paper yet still have no flare. When ever I employ anyone and have to choose from a piece of paper to someone with hands on experience then I go for the experience every time. I feel anyone can put in the time to pass exams. Why waste time if it's not necessary?
I think she's giving hope to those who can't afford going to college
THANK YOU !!! I hate when people call themselves an Interior Designer when they're really just decorators and stylists. We work our asses off to understand and learn not only finishes and what not but we have knowledge of architecture, safety codes and regulations, space planning, etc.
@@Boyeaton1 It's not about all of that. We study safety codes and regulations and architecture. There's a huge difference
Let me start by saying that I love Mr. Kate and the work that she does, along with her team. However, she IS NOT a designer. There is nothing wrong with the decorator, but there is a difference.
As defined by the NCIDQ:
"Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants and are aesthetically attractive. Interior design includes a scope of services performed by a professional design practitioner, qualified by means of education, experience and examination, to protect and enhance the health, life safety and welfare of the public..."
My colleagues and I work INCREDIBLY hard to distinguish ourselves from decorators because there is a difference in our skill set, clientele, projects we will take on, and especially our education. Due to the fact that we are certified, we are held liable for any issues that may endanger the inhabitants of that space. Therefore, we go through a 4-year degree program and 2 years learning under a licensed professional before taking the NCIDQ certification examination. Decorators do not need formal education, but may obtain an associate's degree.
Stephanie Tibbetts she said this in the video..?
Yeah...as an interior design graduate with a four year degree from an accredited university..ugh.
Depending on what state she lives, it is illegal to market herself as an interior designer without a NCIDQ certification. Even I can’t do that without passing my exams, and I’ve worked in commercial healthcare for 3 years.
I am currently only in my second year of college, majoring in interior design, but I already know the difference between interior designers and interior decorators. Interior decorators only do that, decorate... interior designers actually design a space. The decorating of a space is literally the very last week of a 8 month project [hypothetically] and it's a very complex thing to learn. I'm not going to spend my time explaining it because there will still be people out there who won't understand, but please look it up. Mr. Kate, I'm sorry to say this but you really do not get to and should not call yourself an interior designer. Unless you have taken the needed classes to learn codes and regulations of designing a space and you get your license, it's actually illegal for you to advertise yourself as an interior designer [as far as I've been told anyways]. I am sorry to say that, while you may be a professional, and I'll admit that you are very good at what you do and I love your videos, I just can't really accept that you call yourself an interior design without putting in the work that I and many other people are putting in to get that degree and license. I really hope you take into account all the upset people who are actual interior designers [ and architects too] and those who are studying it and put out an apology and explanation for those that you are "inspiring" to become interior designers. It's really misleading when you are only an interior decorator. That's my two cents... Janell Out.
Morgan Louisville I would go watch Rebecca Robinson. She's an actual interior designer and she actually goes through the whole process of everything if you want to see more of that. Most of the "interior designers" on CZcams are actually Interior Decorators and so not many people know the actual work that goes into a space. Of course decorating is the most fun part of a project, but it's also the last part of it. Glad you were able to find a passion and career in that because I have met two designers who can't decorate for sh!t lol
why’s everyone giving her hate? yeah she might not be qualified but so what? she’s still earning a living and making her customers and us happy so let her be.
Becaus she's not qualified! Do you seriously not see the problem with people doing jobs they're not qualified to do? What could possibly go wrong... lol
I love watching you. I find you are so much like I was when I was younger... I even bought all the at home interior designer books for an at home class because I love fixing things up, redesigning things, or giving others some ideas they would just look at me shocked for just thinking of things on the spot. So they would say, "wow how, why aren't you doing interior design. Then my rheumatoid arthritis came back. Plus my other many health issue stopped me from doing much of anything. So I am enjoying watching you get to live your dream. Keep up the energy and amazing personality. Those things are important just like being a kind person with a big heart. Hugs to you all. By the way I am only 47 with the heart of a 16 to 20 yrs old
Wahhhhh thankyousomuch Mr. Kate! To be honest, you inspires me to be an interior designer, I love it when your helping others to make their space pretty and cozy, and I wanna be like that too! Iloveyou and Godbless you for all the good stuffs you did for others and of course for inspiring others too!
Love this ! I’m currently studying civil engineering , but I loveee love interior design and would love to self teach it
you are so amazing, I pretty much grow up watching different interior designers and I didn't watch them in a long time so thank you for bringing me back to this path
I really enjoyed your video. I’m 42 and have wanted to do interior decorating for a very long time but never had the money for school. I’ve written down a lot of plans for remodeling different houses I’ve lived in and of course I have my dream house written down somewhere.
I am so glad I stumbled upon your videos, Mr. Kate, you really helped me figure out exactly what I want to do with my life. I have thought about becoming an interior designer before, but I never really looked into it enough to see all the possibilities. However, now I feel like this is my calling; decorating, and showing off my room has always been super satisfying. Thank you for helping me fully realize this about myself. Keep up the fantastic work!
THANK YOU for separating design vs decor, im studying interior design right now and though I spend most of my time altering floor plans and actual structural elements but so many people think I just pick out couches and paints... not that one is better than the other but its frustrating when people dont understand what you do!
Thank you for this video! You gave me the push I needed. This video really helped me decide to do interior designs, made me realize that I really love it! So here I go!!! 💜
Thank you for this video. I am currently majoring in Fashion design and merchandising, and will be graduating this year 2022. I started researching about becoming an interior designer. I appreciate your tips. Not every route to your career is going to be a straight route and school isn't for everyone. CZcams for me has been my school inside of school. Literally, some of my professors made CZcams videos to teach us. So, being self taught is now becoming a big thing. This was a great look into a different way of pursuing a career.
Thank you for this! I'm thinking of becoming an interior decorator / property stager along with being a licensed realtor and your videos continue to inspire me.
Loved the video! yes I'm in college now for interior design and if you want to work at an actual architecture/ID firm you'll have to pass the exam. Mr. Kate is an entrepreneur and a self made designer which is awesome! But if that intimidates you and you love floorpans and creating the interior of spaces while have a steady/firm job then going to college is good too. Make sure wherever you go though is has a a program that is CIDA accredited and you constantly build your portfolio as soon as you can. when you are in an creative field your resume and degree means almost nothing, focus on your PORTFOLIO. hope this helps some of you guys as well!
You acknowledged that there is a difference between a designer and a decorator, yet continued to misrepresent yourself for the purposes of this video. Your advice is great for becoming a decorator, but no one will become a credited designer that way. And technically you are not either. It's very difficult to see the profession and title be misrepresented so often. Like you I am passionate about my job and that is why I am saying this. Interior design is a licensed profession. Without getting into details, that is the only and simplest way to put it. To be an interior designer, you HAVE to have your degree and years of experience in the field. Designing requires knowledge that decorators do not need or have. Being a decorator never requires school. Designers do sometimes hire decorators, so in no way do we discredit them or devalue them. But calling yourself a designer without a degree is not valid. The interior design profession is a real thing and it's a real job. It is not unrealistic or hard to obtain as long as you have proper certification. Design professionals need accreditation and that is all that we ask for. So if you know you are a decorator, don't call yourself a designer or give wrong information to those who want the proper title and schooling. The real tips for being a designer is go to school to major in interior design, intern, obtain your bachelors or masters, work in a firm or firms, learn about the profession and get hands on real life experience, and pass your NCIDQ. Yes it costs a lot of money but that's just something you have to accept if you want to earn it back. There are many things that interior design encompasses that people do not know or understand and the only way to learn these things is to go to an accredited four year school and major in the subject. And then you will learn why us designers are so irritated when decorators think they can do our job.
Am really inspired by your story......I had been thinking twice on persuading this Carrier because of financial crisis but I now know that its not about a qualification but its about you, your passion
Little late to this video but next year (my junior year) I'm taking an interior design class. It's been an interest to me since I was in fifth grade, in some ways It's like a combination of things I love: Art, Organization, photography, and making others happy. And I can get paid for it! I've always loved room makeover videos, etc, and I remember stumbling across your video and binge watched them constantly, and that's been my biggest motivation since then. Thank you for joy only inspiring me but others❤️😊
Edit: I meant Not instead of Joy
Currently taking an Interior & Home Design class and we are using a program called SketchUp that I just wanted to recommend. You can model homes, interiors etc. in 3D with a lot of detail and it's pretty easy to use too. You can pay for a Pro version but I haven't found it to be too different from the free! I find that using it after creating a mood/inspiration board helps put everything together to get the best result so 10/10 would suggest downloading! Awesome video, thanks for the helpful tips!!
+Karina Noelle Music cool! I haven't heard of that program! Thanks for sharing!
Karina Noelle Music also a lot of designers and decorators use Chief Architecture.
I'm currently enrolled in a bachelor of interior design program in Canada. The title "interior designer" can only be used by those who have graduated from an interior design program at an accredited school and have written the NCIDQ exam. Interior decorating on the other hand is a term that can be used more openly to express what you are doing.
Thank you for the tips. I went to school to be a fashion designer, and also I’m interested in being an interior decorator. My problem is when I’m doing something the colors has to match, but I see that you think more out of the box. You make things look live!!!!! or should I say. Thank you for the advice and tips. Have a blessed one.
Besides CZcams this is literally my dream job
same
I’m going through my quarter life crisis and am so unsure on what creative path I want to follow. But thus video was really great and helpful! Thank you
I just applied today for a education here in the Netherlands for interior decorator and I’m so happy to see this video. You and Joey have been a enormous inspiration for this decision. Thank you
Hey! Interior education in the Netherlands? Is there a college or a course or? Aha sorry, I live here and I am in middle school, deciding on my future. Can give me any education course names or college names? Good luck on your journey!
Eurtle Turtle there are a few! There is one in Utrecht which is very nice but I’m going to a summa college :) good luck
Congratulations !!!!!!!!!!!
@@danouschweren4323 wow thank you so much!! I will definetly check them out :D
Oh my god, thank you SO much for making this video. I've been watching OMG We're Coming Over for a little bit now and I realized pretty quick that interior design/decoration is the thing that I want to put myself into, collage and career-wise. I still have a lot of time, since I'm only a freshman in highschool, but I do have to start thinking about it. Watching what you do has inspired me and opened my eyes in a way that I will never be able to thank you enough for. I was looking for a video like this from you and I finally found it! Thank you so much, I love you❤
I was debating on becoming an interior design/decorator because in school we're doing a career project and you really pushed me to chose this as a job
I’m 13 and I have wanted to be an interior designer since I was 10. Thank you so much for making this video!
Legally she can only call herself an Interior Decorator. Legally you need a license and degree in Interior Designing to call yourself an Interior Designer. However, that doesn't mean you cant be self taught about things , have a natural talent and become a professional. In her case that's what happend. As far as coding etc...that's why you can work with a professional team who are licensed to follow through with your plan and check coding etc to execute plans!
Amen! That's the biggest difference and it's important not to confuse the 2 so clients know what you're really able to do for them. Both are talented, but only 1 can actually communicate accurate plans to subcontractors that are understood to adhere to construction code.
am an interior designer fresh out of an interior design school....I have always admired your work. getting all those creativity,a sense of understanding space without having to go school for it is WOW!!!this requires a lot of hardwork & passion which most students sometimes lack.Love u even more.
Thank you a lot for your sharing! I just quit my corporate job recently to pursue a study in Interior Stylish (in February) and have started to work on some of my friends’ houses and rooms.. for free and really wondering how I should charge others in the future because it takes a lot of my time :) I was thinking of the exact 3 ways as you mentioned in the video so watching your video makes me feel more certain about it. Very helpful to me! Thanks for all the tips too! I hope to start my new career in Interior Styling real soon! Have a nice day! ^^
From Vietnam with love,
Rosie
I've made mood boards and everything but I've run into a few problems. First of all I'm a huge geek and have a ton of posters and collectables I'm really attached to but they don't match my theme at all. Also, I have a pet bearded dragon who's massive aquarium is really hard to style around. I also have a few other problems like how strange my house is built and the gorgeous chair rail that I wish I knew how to style. I know this comment doesn't have much to do with this specific video but I figured the other creative weirdos out there could possibly help me come up with ideas. BTW the theme for my new room is hard to explain but its like cute fantasy shabby chic.
Ashley Ainsworth As a fellow creative weirdo- are your posters tacked or taped to the wall, or hung in a frame? I always find matted/framed work adds infinite value to whatever is inside it- you could pick up some nice sleek frames or build your own/thrift some shabby chic ones and maybe do a linen matte inside as well, to make it fit your theme if you find it too difficult to get rid of. You could also scan them, and maybe filter them in an editing program and have them reprinted to match your color story if theirs isn't going as well- or find an unseen space- like inside a closet for them to go. You could even go on etsy or elsewhere and get custom art of whatever your posters are of- but in whatever color palette YOU choose! That way it reflects your love of your posters but in a way personalized to your design. The best part is that's then totally unique to you and your space, and your supporting local or small artists and not big corporations that take all the profit like most common places to buy posters! I don't know too much about your other obstacles but those were my ideas for your poster struggle! 😊💜 Much luck to you!
Thank you so much for the advice. I didn't even think about scanning them or checking Etsy, I will probably try that.
Ashley Ainsworth I love having posters all over my room because they inspire me so I wouldn't get rid of mine. I also have an aquarium because I have a painted turtle and I decorated his tank by putting Christmas lights from dollar tree on it. And then around Christmas I put some garland around it too. I think it's really fun to do that and it makes it look nice!😁
You could also find a trophy case or something along those lines maybe something that has a door on it and you can store your collectibles in it! My dad has a lot of toy cars not really child's toys but those toy cars that are a lot bigger and he puts them in this trophy case he bought and it looks really nice and the cool thing about it is it has a little light in there!
Thanks I'm going to try doing something like that to my lizards cage, maybe I will use a flower garland on it.
Im in school for interior design rn! Im so happy you explain the difference to people between interior design and decorator!
hi! I’m sorry but I noticed that you are African American, and I was wondering what schools do you think are best fit for Black Americans that are interested in the Interior Design career? I’m a senior in high school and I’m having trouble finding a school that holds my best interest at heart!
Want something original?? Check out my designs on Redbubble inspired by the Moroccan culture:

Thank you for your professional tips. I’m really interested in designing and you’ve really focused me to go in the right direction. Btw I love your and joeys budget friendly episodes. Thanks again.
I'm totally in love with you! This video was sooo helpful. Deep down inside I've always wanted to do something similar to what you're doing! I think your videos have given me the final push to start taking this seriously!
Need to definitely change the title of this... this is not an interior designers job...there are rules!! You’re describing a decorator. If you do this- other contractors and engineers will HATE working with you.
If you aren’t scaling properly to human dimensions, or failing to do an RCP, power and data plan, etc... they will not want to work with you.
Your advice is setting people up to say they are a designer. A client will suffer and not be happy because electricians, plumbers and etc will screw up a project because you weren’t specific enough on outlet circuitry, finishes etc.
Studying history of architecture is a minimal portion of interior design.
Definitely need to change the title... this is very misleading..
What are the most important skills one have to possess to be able to do the job as interior designer in your opinion?
donny728
There’s a lot of skills needed, in my opinion, to be truly successful in the industry.
Being able to understand and create a complete set of plans, schedules, and properly budgeting is important. You want to be professional and make it easy for contractors to understand so they don’t screw up their job. Networking and having professional connections is so valuable.
Also, knowing the right questions to ask clients and how to implement their requests and ensuring it meets the codes in the community. 🤷🏻♀️ There’s a lot more to design than just picking paint and furniture.
@@Lsr000 An interior designer is pretty much an architect In a sense, not a decorator. Definitely not the same thing
@@scholasticbookfair. Ok, i always thought an interior designer also have the skill and the education to decorate, which is not the case for a decorator, because they don't necessarily have the education for that. Good to know, because here in germany, as far as i know, academically, we only have one option in that field, which is interior design
I agree. I love that people are so passionate about creating spaces, however there is a huge insurgence of non educated decorators claiming to be designers. It is not the same. Decorating is not the same as designing. There are some amazing talented folks out there, but I agree with the above comment about the dangers of claiming to have expertise in electrical, ada guidelines etc , as this can really mess up a project.
Hi I'm studying interior design at the university in Jordan it's my first year so u made me fall in love with my choice more than ever so thank u very much and I hope one day I will be like u ❤️thank u
Thank Mr.kate💚 I'm 17 years old and I'm not sure if I can choose interior design for my subject or not until I watched your video. I don't usually believe in myself that I can do it better so I'm scared of doing it. But god gives me a good chance to accidentally see your video☺️ Thank you so much😘 I know myself better now😌
Thank you so much. I'm a 33 year old creative mother and you inspire me and gave me the best advice. Plus saved a lot of money for college awesomeness
I have to admit "OMG" anything is my guilty pleasure. I just love Mr. Kate and Joey. I too am a creative weirdo, but my creativity is with nails. I did manage to finally turn my hobby into my career and got my Nail Tech. license two summers ago. I love CZcams and you (along with some other favorites) have some great nails. Part of watching your videos I have to admit, is to see what's on Kate's nails today. If you ever find yourself in Maine, look me up, it would be my honor and pleasure to do your nails. Thanks for being one of my favorite guilty pleasure. OMG, let me know when you're coming over.
I love your ideas, and little craziness. I did a interior decorating Online Course a few years ago, so I do have a few ideas. I love Thrift Store shopping, and doing DIY Projects also. I love decorating bottles, lamps, and making things. Keep up your good work.
Dee Luscious, Where do you get this course, Thanks.
This video made me feel so happy & at peace. It makes me feel like I’m on the right path to reach my dreams. I know this video is kinda old but I’m so greatful I stumbled upon it. Thank you so much :,)
This is honestly so inspiring!! Thank you so much kate- I have always had a dream to be an interior designer/decorator thingy, and I never really new where to start. I would look at such a huge world and wonder 'how the hell am I gonna do it?!' Most of my GCSE Options were creative (excluding the compulsory ones and history and french) and I would always question myself on my desisions. But really has put me in the right tracks, (and ik this sounds cheesy) but I'm ready to pursue my dream in what I love to do most!! Thank u so much Kate!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Literally before I heard about u I wanted to be an interior designer and now I have the best advise ever thank you
I’m in a interior design program and this video is bothering me my professors say that shows on HGTV and shows like Mr.kates is nothing to what real interior designers do
Interior decorators = decorates
Interior designers = architects but we cannot build the plans we make we work with architects and engineers to do the heavy work for us
It’s not all about color and furnishings that like 20% of what interior designers do
Hey. I've been so interested in joining an interior design program, but I'm not sure what route I need to take. Like what programs to get involved in and etc. Could exchange emails or dm each other on a social media
Deja Bolton it all depends where you live I live in Houston so I got in to HCC interior design program it’s 2 years but they are accredited by CIDA they just cram it into 2 years to get your licensing
Where do you live?
I just recently started watching your videos. Yesterday I was on google to do research on Interior Designing because I'm going to college in a couple months to pursue a degree in Interior Designing and I rannned across yours video. Your videos inspire me to want to peruse this career even more Makes me more excited to do this. Love what you do. Love you girl 😍😍❤❤
Awesome!!!! I love these pointers. I am so on my way. I love being creative, transforming spaces and positively impacting others lives
I am truly inspired. Thank you for sharing. Answered prayers it is. Love lots from Philippines.

Aloha Mr. Kate! You little rebel you! LOL My personal opinion is that we are a nation built on entrepreneurship. If you have developed skills and you are driven by a powerful passion to create in the way you so uniquely do...GO FOR IT! I am a licensed Medical Massage Therapist. I don't care if people who aren't licensed practice if people are drawn to them for whatever talents they possess. Certain people come to me from what I have to offer. In 4th grade we had to do little speeches about things and one question was what you want to be when you grow up and I was going to be sharing in the last day so I could see what other people wanted to be because I had no clue and almost every girl chose interior designer so I decided to do that so when I did research about it I got my inspiration unlike the other girls who just said it.
My high school actually starts interior design classes next semester so I'm trying to get inspired😏
Wow.. first of all congratulations gurl
This is absolutely the BEST video ever!!! I am a college student and my dream job is to be an interior designer but I felt so discouraged for so long because I'm not majoring in interior design. This has really helped me to not let this dream die. Thank you so much. I love watching your videos and hope to be in your shoes one day!
I definitely feel like your designs have gotten better and better over time.
You really motivate me to persue Interior design as a career 😘😘 Love your positivity ♥️♥️
