Yes and no. The MV is pushing Halsey's vocals into the background in the 1st time the chorus is played. After that she is the lead for the chorus. The album and digital audio versions have Halsey as the lead singer in the chorus right away. However, she's plending in so good that she's more an 8th member than a guest/feature. Way better than the Nicki Minaj feature. Halsey even confirmed that she wrote and sang her chorus in English and in Korean. BTS helped her with the Korean pronunciation.
The MV is not only tribute to "Singin' in the Rain" but also to "La La Land" (stage where Jin is spinning around the light post next to the benches, "A lovely night" scene from "La La Land") and "Big" (piano keys).
Halsey's part is actually longer on the album...
I like you guys, I think I'll subscribe! For what you said as to why they went for Halsey and not Taylor Swift, BTS has said before that they dont want to collaborate with people just for the sake for collaboration. they do it when they think that the person they are collaborating with fits the song and the music etc, or what they have in mind. I wasnt a halsey fan, i was indifferent to her, but honestly her voice in the chorus fits so well with theirs in this song, it feels like a perfect song for the collab, which is why RM said as soon as they got the track, they thought Halsey would be perfect. I like how she doesnt overshadow the song, but you can still hear her. And she's non-existent in the MV track, probably because they will mainly use that track to do their promotions in Korea, or in concerts by themselves, there is more of her in the audio track.

Actually Halsey's been friends with BTS and has supported them since 2017 and they been talking of a collab for a while but were waiting for right fit. RM said when they heard the track they felt Halsey would fit great and called her up to feature in it. She has more lines in the album version. Honestly at this point BTS is huge in the US and their album and all their songs shot to number one on itunes as soon as it was released plus this mv even with Halsey barely in it broke youtube record. So they got Halsey in it cuz they're good friends not with sole purpose to reach out more western even though they might get some of her fans of course. If they really wanted that could have either sang in English or gotten with Taylor Swift like you said but wouldn't have looked right. They said they choose collabs based on right fit. They did that with Nicky for Idol as well.

the version with hasley is on spotify and as they can't perform every time with halsey so they minimized her part to chorus in this version and i think they have enough western audience and don't need any support.

It's always been that way with BTS. When they collaborate they make sure they are not over powered by the featured artist. They don't need that anyway.
The MV is actually an homage to the classic 1950s movie musical “singin’ in the rain” and I absolutely love the very classic old school musical almost broadway feel the MV has! And also about what you guys were saying about BTS collaborating with Halsey, BTS have talked extensively about their thoughts on collaborations and BTS themselves said that whenever they do a collaboration with someone they don’t ever collaborate with an artist for fame or views or money or for the other artist’s fame or fans etc. BTS flat out said that they will not collaborate with an artist and will even say no to a collaboration if they don’t feel like that particular artist will fit with the style of song they are doing or the kind of song or sound they want to go for. And they are friends with Halsey and Halsey has been a huge fan of BTS and a huge supporter of BTS for a long time. BTS are incredibly smart and incredibly deliberate in all of their artistic and creative decisions and with BTS what’s important to them is the art itself. Just in a recent interview they were asked about why they don’t release any music in English (which could be HUGE in terms of recognition amongst western audiences and potential airplay on the radio) and BTS said that they do not and will not ever put out any music that is completely in English because that is not true or genuine to who they are. They said that they always want to remain completely true to themselves and always remain 100% genuine to who they are as people, to their work and who they are as artists, and to where they are from. Even if doing so means that the song or album won’t be a number 1 hit. Having more views and gaining larger audiences isn’t what’s important to them. And honestly they really don’t need to anyway. They have already gained a massive fanbase worldwide from just doing what they’re doing and always remaining true and genuine to themselves. But anyways that’s just my thoughts on it!

It's a love song to ARMYS based on things they have said. Because Army has loved them from the beginning they are no longer Boys in Luv chasing love but have found their own sense of self-love so they are Boys with Luv. Love the album. Best album I have heard in a very long time. I love their versatility. I love their homage to Singing in the Rain. Also, I was nervous that they were sharing their comeback with anyone else so I am pleased she had a small part. Don't forget that it's the western artists who are begging BTS for collabs because it boosts THEIR popularity globally in many cases.
One thing most non-armys miss is that this isn't so much a 'love song' as it is a song about what love is about (the Korean name of it is 'A poem for small things'). And much of it was also a thank you to their fans for being with them through their hard times (there were a lot of cue phrases in it that armys would pick up on).
Halsey was on it because they're friends and have wanted to work together for a while. They realized this song fit her voice so they invited her. They're not going to just add some random celebrity for name recognition. They add who fits the music and who they feel good about working with.
The song is actually about the fans. It talks about their past and how the fans have given them wings to rise and now that they have risen they want to maintane eye contact with the fans.
bts said this album is made for army (the lyrics).
they had a song called boy in luv back in 2014 which = teen/young love (in school).
then now continued with boy with luv = mature/grown love. finding love in simple things like wondering what we do/ eat etc. its growth!
BTS can't sing with Halsey everywhere
all the time, so she has small parts of the mv version,but with the other audio version, Halsey sings a lot.

BTS said in an interview that they're friends with Halsey and that they loved working with a friend. They met in 2017, BTS went to her house to hang out in LA, then she went to SK and visited them last year. They're actually friends. Also, she's a monster when it comes to radio spins, she's all over the radio right now. BTS need the radio spins, it's the last thing they need to top the Hot 100 chart and they're getting those spins.

I agree with the guy at the end in the black jacket. BTS is already International they dont need other artists to make their name bigger. They collaborate with artists that they want to work with and fits their sound not the other artists sounds.
I think the big reason they had halsey is bc shes a radio queen. radioplay has been out biggest issue and radio stations seeing halsey in the title makes it easier to get them to play it, plus her label is promoting the song too not just bts' american distributor.

A couple notes on this song/video:
1. This is a call back to 'Boy in Luv' that they did in one of the early albums. In their early music videos, every time a girl was featured, she was always a "prize." They were always chasing after her (and treating her kind of like crap tbh). This collab is important because it's making a statement that they don't have that mindset anymore. Halsey in this video is dancing and singing with them as equals. Pretty cool statement.
2. Genre would be funk pop. My favorite part was hands down Suga's rap. I like that the instrumentals had a hint of that kind of Earth, Wind, & Fire type good vibes. Love the windows down comment. That's EXACTLY what I thought of! People underestimate the power of a good windows down song.
3. Lyrics have a lot of references only hard core ARMY will understand. It's literally a love letter to their fans saying that despite having this global stage, the thing that matters the most to them is their fans (RM even hinted that at one time maybe he was too ambitious to new goals/awards/etc., but he realized none of that mattered without fans).
4. What I respect about Halsey is that (in the audio version) she sang IN KOREAN. What's great about that is that with Kpop/western artists, it's always the Korean artist that usually has to sing in English or give the spotlight to the western star. But here we have Halsey who went all in as a featured artist. She even consulted on how to pronounce the Korean and practiced hours and hours on the choreo.
5. The main reference for this video was 'Singin in the Rain' which is a nod to the overall theme of PERSONA that they're going for as their overarching theme. 'Singin in the Rain' is a very self-referential film about the outer persona you present to the world. It's the shining image and the contract that you make between others and your inner self to have harmony/teamwork/etc. Cool stuff.
You guys should check out the rest of the album. I'm guessing you'll like HOME and Dionysus.
And ya'll should go to the tour. There's still some seats in Chicago/Metlife! I'll be at Chicago Day 1 and am thinking of trying for Chicago Day 2 (if you go to Chicago Day 2 hmu). As someone that has sat at the top of the stadium, sometimes that's the way to go tbh. Like, just buy a couple beers, get a good buzz going, and enjoy the show. They're amazing performers and the lightsticks are something else in concert.
(also I laughed out loud with the guy on the right yelling because "It's part of the storyline!" and the guy on the left replying with "But that's why my reaction is so pure.") Awesome stuff!

I was waiting for your reaction to this video. :). BTS said (can’t recall if it came from their comeback show on vlive) that Halsey would fit well with this song so they called her about the collab. Also, they’ve been friends since they met at 2017 BBMAs. About Halsey being in the chorus part only, I think is a smart move. It’s cause when they perform this song anywhere (like Korean music shows/concerts), they’ll be able to sing it well without Halsey being there or having a replacement for her part. You know what I mean? Love this song. It’s so addictive. Thanks for all your honest reactions.
i love how you love and respect BTS. i get all your opinions. kudos! i think BTS collaborated with artists that they really like and got close with and not entirely strategy wise. we all know that BTS is entirely in their own level up there where nobody could even get to. they don't need other artist or celebrity to reach their goals. all they need is to stay as themselves and stay with their ARMYs. Haley is not necessary in Boy with Luv but she didn't ruin it either. i respect and trust BTS' decisions coz they got to where they are now because of those decisions. yes ARMYs contributed a lot to BTS' success but there wouldn't be ARMYs if BTS doesn't have amazing music, drive and passion to everything they do, beautiful personalities, respect and humility and genuine love to each other and their fans. so, whatever they end up doing... i trust, support and love it all the way. BTS is the best! there's nothing like BTS!
Also digging into the lyrics its definitley not a romantic love song i would say its more like an endearing poem about the way their fans make them feel and see things from another perpective! (+The name of the song in Korean is: 'A POEM FOR SMALL THINGS')

💜Halsey has a longer part on album. But what’s different is she did choreography with them, but more importantly, SHE SANG IN KOREAN! They don’t cater to western world and finally an artist is willing to sing in THEIR LANGUAGE!💜

There’s actually more Halsey in the audio track... they didn’t incorporate more of her in the actual mv cz when BTS do their promotions, Halsey won’t be there with them. Oh and BTS and Halsey have known each other and been friends since like 2017. She’s one of the few western artists who actually does care about BTS. And about better selections, BTS have said it’s not about just getting anyone to collaborate for the sake. They choose to collaborate when it’s right, and with whom they feel best suits them

I loved the discussion you guys had about the video. In my opinion, I'm glad they didn't colab with a bigger artist because a good example of what could've happened is what happend with Travis Scott featuring Drake on his song Sicko Mode. Travis got outshined and Drake's verse was favored by the general public to the point of radio stations playing Drake's part of the song only. So I'm happy about the move they made plus they adore Halsey.

In the album Halsey sings more and that amazing, because the mv is when BTS has to perform the music, so they can't sing that song always with her, for that reason in the mv her part is short. But in the album you can hear Healsey's voice more !!!!!

The album is AMAZING! Halseys voice color fit perfectly with the guys. Many people don't care for her, but they honestly could not have picked anyone better as far as the sound.

This a song for the fans. Please react to DKDKTV explanation of Boy with Love by a Korean so you can understand the MV better. Also Halsey did great, album version she has more lines, and sings in Kon-glish which is BIG thing. Normally when a western artist collab with Kpop artist, the have to do an all ENG songs or the only do ENG lines, but Halsey took extra time to learn chorus in Korean, and she doesn't dance in her MV, yet she flew all was to SK to learn choreography. This collab is more organic, version Nicki Minaj was very edit in, plus she didn't even bothered to read lyrics see what song was about and ended rapping some non sence, reason why ARMY didn't accept the collab and refused to request it on radio (since was the only version that Columbia released) the collab with Designer also was bad because his lyrics had nothing to do with song theme, and the edit out J HOPE who had the best lines in Mic Drop.
Also Halsey has been friends with BTS for 2 years so the collaboration so Its more sincere versus a forced collaboration

Halsey actually did a great job in the album version of the song. This collab was successful and did not worry me half as much as the one with Nicki Minaj because this felt more natural.

Re Halsey & one of the other comments: "Halsey's part is actually longer on the album..." True but still a very small amount tho, she's just more audible on the chorus, barely detected. If u heard it, it's still a BTS song & if u didn't know she was featured, you wouldn't know, u'd just think it was a back up vocal - a western feature is usually very notable who takes about half the track, this is all BTS & Halsey just blends in the chorus on the digital version. By the way, I don't have a problem w/ Halsey; whoever the feature would've been, I agree that the amount they were given was appropriate.

I don't agree with the catch grab comment. Halsey and BTS have been friends for 2 years. They have been talking about a collaboration for some time and they probably have been corresponding consistently since meeting. I am sure they mentioned it and she was excited for them and WANTED to join.
I think this is a pretty obvious grab, not for the West because they already have a solid presence there but, for radio airplay in the West which is the only frontier they have yet to claim

One of the reasons why they took halsey under the rim is because she's the Queen of radio and bts has really less radio spins and through featuring halsey they're expanding their audience and reach
