The Historic Philadelphia Uptown Theater

Musicians, patrons, an architect, and a wide variety of North Philadelphia neighbors tell the story of the famed but closed Uptown Theater. An effort has been organized to revive this show place that played a critical role in the Rhythm and Blues cultural revolution of the 1950's and 60's. This film includes the last interview with famed impresario and radio personality Georgie Woods.
The Uptown Theater opened in 1928 for the Stanley Warner chain. From 1951 to 1978, the theater hosted big-name R&B and Motown acts. Leading the renovation is the Uptown Entertainment and Development Corporation (UEDC), a Community Development Corporation that was incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization. Grew up going to the Uptown Theater and saw everybody there. Smokey Robinson, The Intruders, Delfonics, Sam Reed and his great orchestra, Joe Tex, The Mad Lads, Magnificent Men, Stevie Wonder, The Motown Revue, Billy Stewart. Bomaye !

We use to stand in line from 9am to they opened at 1pm and we flew inside to get to the front row boy did we have fun in our navy blue Shells and white bell bottoms I can close my eyes and see us running I thank God 🙏 I was born in that era!!

My family lived behind The Uptown on 2242 North Carlisle Street. So as a kid growing up around there of course I seen a lot of shows there.
