That's hard on the bearings pounding on the shaft. It's easier to remove the thru bolts and fan and Pulley and set it back on the pulley like a stand and tap the front hsng down a bit on the shaft to clear the 2" ear. When in the spot you want it pull the front back up and re-install the thru bolts , fan and pulley. This is especially good on a roller bearing alt. and don't have to reset the brushes.

Good info man. I've had to change alternators in the past because of this problem.

I don’t hit the rotor as it can damage to plastic tolerance ring in the rear and also break a brush. I remove the fan and pulley after removing the thru bolts and set it face down on the shaft on a thinner 1 groove pulley for a stand and tap the front housing down on the shaft till I have enough clearance. Then turn to the clocking you want then put the alt in a 6 groove pulley (with the spacer) and then the rest the alternator face down using the pulley as a stand. Tap the rear down lightly tell stator and housing are seated. Install the thru bolts and equally tighten them and check that the rotor doesn’t rub on the stator and if it doesn’t install the spacer , fan and pulley and spin again to check to see if it’s free.

Does "clocking" change how the alternator works or is it just moving the terminals for a better physical location?

Just moves the terminals..don't forget to subscribe

I feel like this is a really dumb question that I know the answer to but I recently put a gm alternator on my cummins and it's not charging. The only thing is I had to mount the alternator basically upsdown from what it was in the gm pickup it came from. My question is would running the alternator 100 degrees off from its factory position cause it not to charge? Do I need to relclock the innards to make it work?

You shouldn't have to do anything internally

May have damaged the brushes when pounding on the shaft....otherwise nice video

So clocking is just a term for rotating?

Ah, interesting. Never heard of clocking an alternator before, but it looks like its just like clocking a turbo, just with a few more bolts.
