I am no stranger to doing the hard yards, and I think most would agree, that real world scenario practice is key, but these videos and ones like it sure do help, at the very least as a starting point with which to go out and experiment, so thanks for putting the time aside to make this one!

    I've been binge watching yours and other's YTube'rs videos on G100 and G9 as Im moving from Canon (FF) to MFT. What I've found myself is that Lumix G9 and G100 autofocus (dynamic) tracking a moving object and also for a face detection and tracking, works only when metering mode is set on 'multi metering' i.e. a circle with a dot inside. Quite hidden in the manual but it works:)

    Good review. It seems like the G9 is doing very well with it's improved AF. It's not a SONY but look way better than my GH5. It might be time to let it go and get a G9. For my usage a GH6 (if it evr comes to life) or a S5 are a too highinvestment. Thanks for the vluable info. Greetings from Paraguay.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety +3

      Thanks for watching! I agree, the S5 is too expensive for my budget. So I'm sticking with the G9 for now. I'll see what the GH6 brings. Not sure if it will be more video centric or more photo centric. Since I only do CZcams videos I'm okay with my G9 for now. It has enough video features, but mostly I'm into photography.

    The biggest complaint I hear about the G9 is its video autofocus. Thanks for all your advice on how to make it better. You are right on, you just continually need to be practicing. It is very nice the G9 has animal detect for the birders and wildlife shooters to make it easier.Thanks for another great video!

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Steven, Thanks for chiming in. When you get right down to it, video focus actually works the same as focusing photos on the G9. Through testing I've discover I can use the same techniques on photos and videos. I just change AF Mode depending on the subject matter. If I'm shooting pinpoint AF for photos, I'm using the same AF method for video clips that are taken at the same time. I wish I'd known this sooner, as I've always been afraid of really testing the G9 video AF because of what other people have said. I should know better! ;) Happy New Year!

      @hVF8KZuQPeCc8u Před 2 lety

      @@ImageMaven You are showing the way to Panasonic AF mastery! I think the criticism of the G9's video autofocus is mainly the hunting/pulsating phenomenon from vlogging with the camera. Sony and Canon have great continuous and video auto focus that sticks tightly to face and subject tracking. I think you are showing there are ways around that with the G9. Bravo!

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety +2

      Here's the irony, Steven... I got a Lumix GH3 about 9 years ago, because my Canon 5D Mk2 couldn't focus on me when I was talking in front of the camera for my CZcams and online course videos. I always had to put a stuffed animal or something in the shot and pre-focus. It was frustrating and time consuming. I still use that same GH3 with my old broken 12-35mm lens for shooting CZcams videos. Never had a problem with it finding me. No pulsing. Using AFS + Custom Multi (with AFC ON in video settings). It worked the first time I used it and I never changed that setting again. I think this is actually the first video where I used the G9 and my 12-60mm lens to shoot my talking head parts, I just needed the GH3 to shoot the back of the G9 for demo purposes. Who knew? :)

      @@ImageMaven Very good veteran commentary that you don't need all the spiffy features on today's cameras to get the job done. The more I proceed with my photography journey, the more I go most/all cameras today are more than sufficient to produce good photos and videos. Just get good with what you have.

    Yes Panasonic AF is an enigma, maybe everything will be fine and maybe it won't. Then I decided to add a few hundreds euros and took sony A7c and I don't have to worry about autofocus anymore.

    I’ve been trying AFf vs AFC for vlogging. I don’t really vlog much, but I’m trying to find the most reliable setting. AFf single area human detect works well so far. AFC seems to lose focus on my face if I move from a light area to a dark one. I want to vlog my trip to Windsor, Ontario Canada is so close to Detroit, but it’s a treat to cross the border.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před rokem

      Hi April. If you use your G100, it's a no brainer for vlogging. To be honest I don't even check what AF setting I'm on when I use it to vlog. (And I use it all the time lately for my CZcams videos with the 15mm lens in my studio or on location.) That camera is pretty easy to operate and it's much easier to handle for vlogging than the G9. Try it out a few times before your trip. And let me know if you have any questions.

      Hi Gene, No I haven't done any work with the G7. I only make videos on gear that I own. However, most Lumix cameras have similar features and menu items. So you should find some help in my G9 series. The G7 is a great camera though! Small and agile. A good friend of mine has one as a second body to her G9 and loves that it's so small. I think it doesn't matter whether you have the camera set to AFC or AFS when the "Continuous AF" setting is on anything but off as the AFS/AFC switch dictates what half pressing does, even in video.

    Hi , your videos are a very useful revision source when I can’t quite remember how some features in G9 work. I noticed in this video you’re video record button has a large rubber extension. Is this a Canadian feature or an accessory?

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety

      Hi Nigel, It's an accessory called a ProDot. I like it because I can find the video button without taking my eye off the EVF. You can put them on any camera button but I find this most handy. I've put a link to it in the video description, on my gear list. You get 2 per package. p.s. Sometimes I have to watch my own videos for reminders about features that I don't use very often. 😅

    Hi Marlene, I have the Lumix RX 9, I use it for underwater videography, the menu has a similarity to Lumix G9. I want to use it in FULL video Auto mode but when I turn on the camera to video I get "Current focal length setting 35mm Change the setting? Yes, No" This never came up before & in an underwater housing I don't want this to appear. What is your suggestion to remove it? So everything is auto!

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 měsíci

      This happens when you add some 3rd party lenses that don’t have the electronic connection in the lens mount. So perhaps your housing comes with a fixed lens? If not perhaps your lens got moved a bit when you put the housing on and isn’t making contact with the camera. If it has its own lens you can change that 35mm setting to whatever the lens is and then hit ‘Yes’

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety

      I don't really consider it a skip. Those cameras are for very different purposes. G100 is vlogging-centric and the GX9 is photo centric. I did consider buying the GX9 but it doesn't have an external mic input jack, and that's a must-have feature for me. Also I prefer a flip out screen rather than the one the Gx9 has. Since I only review the features of gear that I own, the GX9 hasn't been covered in any of my videos. Lots of people have reviewed this camera though, so I'm sure you can find some content out there. Thanks for the question.
