    Well done guys. Surprisingly I could understand Portuguese quite well even though I've never studied it..helps that I know Italian and Spanish though. I find Latin based languages enter my brain easily compared to other languages (especially Thai which I'm currently learning), so props to Grace for speaking Latin languages so well!

      Thanks Adrian! That's great, isn't it? I feel the same about Italian, I don't speak it, but I can understand quite a few things, makes me want to take a closer look in the future!
      Grace's language skills are outstanding, I was super impressed!
      And good luck with Thai! Also a super interesting language, I would love to learn it in the future, how difficult do you find it compared to latin based languages?

      @@Speechbound I think if you've got a grip on Chinese then Thai will be slightly easier for you. Latin languages are generally around 2.5/5 in difficulty. I got to Intermediate Spanish in a few months for eg. Thai I've been learning for about 8 months and I'm upper beginner/lower intermediate (according to YT playlists), but I still struggle to understand much when listening to native speakers interact. So I'd rate Thai as 4/5 difficulty for Latin/European language speakers. Difficulties are: tones, mono syllabic lexicon, many words have multiple meanings depending on what other words (also with multiple meanings) they're paired with, and of course learning a new script means I can't simply open a book and immediately recognise words.
      So all that means I'm having to adjust my expectations about how quickly I can learn, and also what kind of inputs I can digest. I'm not making a huge effort to learn vocab this time..I'm mostly just watching YT videos in Thai and doing classes when available, and letting my brain acquire Thai naturally. It's slow but actually enjoyable..😊

      @@ady38 thanks for the breakdown. Makes a lot of sense what you said. I feel very similar about Chinese. Even though my vocabulary level is growing quickly these days, listening comprehension is still incredibly hard. Like yourself I got to a decent level in Spanish within 3 months. That is not at all the case when studying Chinese.
      But like you said the most important thing is to enjoy the process, can't always rush things.
      2 tools I can really recommend for watching videos are LanguageReactor (free version is sufficient), you can use it within CZcams (selected videos) and most Netflix shows/movies, it's a Chrome plugin.
      The other one (paid) is FluentU, it really helps me to increase my listen comprehension skills quickly!

    Grace is strong 💪 in Mandarin 🇨🇳.
    You are strong 💪 in the European 🇪🇺 languages especially Spanish 🇪🇸. She could have used the verb "poner" for putting on pants 👖. Yet, "usar" works.
    I learned Latin. I speak Spanish, French, German and Tagalog.

      Thank you friend! Tagalog is spoken in the Philippines correct? I don't know much about it but it sounds fascinating! Was ist deine Muttersprache?

    • @WineSippingCowboy
      @WineSippingCowboy Před 9 měsíci

      Yes 👍. Tagalog is the national language. English is the main international language. Both are taught from kindergarten to University 🏫. A 3rd language is taught, depending on the area where a Filipino is. If he is in Cebu, he learns Bisayan. If he is in Mindanao, he may learn Chavacano or another language.
      Castillan Spanish was the required 2nd language. That changed when Spain 🇪🇸 lost the Spanish American War to the USA 🇺🇸. Chavacano is what is left. 1 dialect derives from Spanish in Mexico 🇲🇽. The other derives from southern Spain 🇪🇸, including Metro Valladolid.
      Danken Sie. Nein. Das ist Spanisch. Aber ich reise oft Auf die Philippinen. Ich haben Onklen, die being Militar gedient haben, in Subic Bay und Clark Air Force Base.
      Und ich bin Sanger. Die Philipinen haben grossartige Sanger. Morissette Amon ist eine Bleispiele.

      @@WineSippingCowboy wow thanks so much for the detailed explanation! I would love to visit the Philippines one day and find out more!
      If you don't mind me correcting you:
      *ich bin Sänger (don't forget the accent)
      * Beispiel (example)
      That's an amazing skillset you have there, respect! I assume you have traveled a lot in your life?

    • @WineSippingCowboy
      @WineSippingCowboy Před 9 měsíci +1

      I do not mind the correction. 😎
      Note 📝 my Handy 1 will not give me the umlaut or other diacritical marks. If I was on a desktop or laptop 💻, such marks would be there. And 2 it will try to autocorrect words which are not in English. I keep struggling to stop that effect. Thus, some words will be misspelled.
      As for The Philippines 🇵🇭. I have been traveling to and from there for 25+ years, since childhood. I do see my relatives there. They married Filipinas and retired there from the US military, different branches. Also, the expenses are much less than in the USA 🇺🇸, where I live, and in Canada 🇨🇦, the nation I travel to the most, The Philippines is somewhere after Canada.
      Of all the Westerners in The Philippines, Americans are the most numerous, British 🇬🇧 Commonwealthers are 2nd, Germans 3rd and Italians 4th. I hardly met any Latinos, Spaniards or Portuguese there.
      Many Chinese, some Hong Kong 🇭🇰 expatriates, some South Koreans, some Vietnamese, some Asian Indians 🇮🇳.
      The climate is like southern Spain 🇪🇸 or southern California.
      Singapore 🇸🇬 is more hot 🔥 and more humid 🌧 like Hawaii or Florida.

      Hey Jose! Thanks so much for the nice comment! I picked up some Indonesian, but not a ton yet unfortunately. But yes, you're right once you have a good reason to study a language, you can gain a lot of motivation from it. Dutch is a cool language (us German can understand a little bit) but Finnish sounds super interesting too. I'd love to learn Swedish or Norwegian at some point! Greetings from Canada!

    Para ser verdadeiro o vosso português é muito pobre. Têm que melhorar a pronunciação das palavras. O que vocês falaram é uma nova língua o PORTUNHOL. Spanish with Portuguese. Usaram o português com sotaque brasileiro. O português de Portugal é bem mais difícil de pronunciar e de aprender. Ambos têm que melhorar esse português. Mas valeu pelo esforço de ambos. Já agora uma forma de aprender o português é conseguires falar com portugueses que vivem aí no Canadá. Há uma grande comunidade portuguesa a viver no teu país que certamente irão ajudar-te a melhorar o teu português. Saudações de Portugal.

      Obrigado pelo comentário. Aprendi português brasileiro, não estou tentando falar português europeu. Claro, você tem direito à sua opinião, está certo, as habilidades linguísticas sempre podem ser melhoradas. É claro que é fácil para falantes nativos criticarem os estrangeiros, tudo bem. Para mim é mais importante comunicar-se fluentemente do que falar cada idioma perfeitamente. Estou muito feliz com meu progresso em português e é o esforço que conta 😉 O fato de eu poder conversar com a Grace em português sem sequer olhar para um dicionário ou ficar travado é uma sensação incrível 🥳
