I have this same bucket that I bought online--local Wal-mart does not sell anything like this. I opened mine up not to use the food inside but I saw there was enough space to put in 4 additional 4 serving pouches I got from another company then put the lid back on, that way I maximize the available space in that bucket

Use the pancake mix at home to make room for other items like a small jar of honey and cans of spam, chicken, or tuna. Maybe even some small fishing gear, or trap making items to supplement what you have. In a survival/bugout situation, where you are moving constantly, trying to pan fry or gridddle the pancakes could be a problem. And I dont think you would want to drink the batter :) The other items can use cold water if you have to, just let it sit and stir longer.

Augason Farms also makes one-person 72-hour kits that are in smaller buckets and will fit better into tight spaces in your vehicle. All these small grab-n-go buckets are good for no-notice emergency evacuations. I keep some in the hall closet close to the front door. Just make sure you also bring a nesting camp cookware set, a packet of disposable paper or plastic bowls, disposable flatware, enough containers of drinking water, some plastic trash bags and a one-burner butane stove with extra butane cylinders so you can do tailgate cooking during rest stops or safely cook meals in your motel room or inside your van.
Do pay attention to the contents of these food buckets and the cooking instructions. Many of the foods in these buckets, such as the pancake mix, actually have to be cooked not just steeped in hot water. And be sure to bring a small bottle of cooking oil and a small bottle of pancake syrup or honey if you will be cooking pancakes. And bring a box of quart size Zip Lock bags because these Mylar food pouches do not reseal and usually contain more than one serving. And bring a small, plastic measuring cup. You can bring along some canned meat and canned veggies to supplement meals made from these food buckets. A small bottle of Tabasco sauce and a little plastic shaker of garlic powder will greatly improve the flavor of the lunch and dinner meals.
If you do not want to have to cook your food or bring along cookware and disposable bowls or wash up used cookware, just buy pouches of Mt. House meals if you can afford these. You will still need a way to boil the drinking water you add to the Mt. House pouches and you will need a re-usable spork for each person, but there will be little clean-up because you eat your meal directly from the food pouch.
Whatever option you choose for your emergency food, do road test that food under realistic conditions before you commit to buying more than just one little food kit. You will be surprised at the hidden flaws you discover in your emergency food planning. Better to discover the flaws during testing than during a real emergency.

I have a mix of different companies including Augason but man, Mountain House uses so much meat in most of their products and I just can't get over how normal the food tastes. I have 3 months of Mountain House in case of an Earthquake here in Seattle and from 3 months to a year is other makers. I just feel that the 3 months are very realistic risk in my lifetime so I take very seriously. From 3 months to 1 year is in the just in case category. When I go camping I also end up pulling mountain house meals so I do use them on a regular basis so end up having some rotation.
