    Great article. Fair broadcasting - not trying to catch someone out, but asking sufficiently probing questions (for this forum) - and what seem like honest answers. Dale Vince - I will buy your book... very impressive. Thank you.

    There are now huge expanses of offshore wind farms in the north sea. You are not allowed/able to fish within their boundaries so they become de facto marine reserves. I really hope they help fish stocks recover.

    • @broadbeanification
      @broadbeanification Před 3 lety

      Hopefully we can start constructing wind turbines that don’t cause as much noise pollution. Even our green technology is causing some levels of damage, solar panels killing bats, etc. We have a long way to go and not much time.

    • @ecoworrier
      @ecoworrier Před 3 lety

      @@broadbeanificationHi. I was talking about offshore wind farms - I dont hear many people complaining about noise from them. As for bats - do you mean concentrated solar? Not sure how PV panels can kill bats. And offshore wind - again, not many bats around there. If we were really worried about protecting birds we would stop factory farming them, hunting them, driving cars at high speed and owning cats.

    • @broadbeanification
      @broadbeanification Před 3 lety

      @@ecoworrier don’t know why you’re in debate mode, I was just adding to the conversation. If you don’t know about bats being killed by PV panels look it up and offshore wind turbines cause noise pollution in the ocean disrupting many species. I’m not arguing against these technologies, just pointing out they need improving. Also bats are mammals not birds.

    • @ecoworrier
      @ecoworrier Před 3 lety

      @@broadbeanification Hi again. Debate mode? I thought that's what the comment section was for. My first post was highlighting a side benefit of offshore wind and you came back with 2 negatives of green tech - noise pollution and panels killing bats, etc. I did Google panels killing bats but most of the discussion was about bats and mostly birds being killed by wind turbines. I thought your "etc" was referring to birds. I'm quite clear about the difference. So I found something about PV panels (presumably large horizontal arrays - not panels on buildings) being mistaken for water bodies by bats and birds, and concentrated solar farms burning animals when they fly through the concentrated sun beam.
      So I'm not clear if you are for or against green tech or what your point was about the bats. If you are against then we should do some cost benefit analysis of all methods of energy production. If you are for - then we are on the same page.

    • @broadbeanification
      @broadbeanification Před 3 lety

      @@ecoworrier it’s not a debate if I agree with you though is it. I was extremely clear that I’m not arguing against green tech, I specifically said that I’m not. I think you should read my comments properly before you respond. There is such a thing as a nuanced perspective, I can be in favour of something and still want it to be improved. It’s not a difficult concept.

      Ban it? That's your solution to a problem? Who will enforce the ban? You?
      Have you ever been a fisherman? Have you ever lived in a country that relies on fish? Have you ever been a farmer?
      Ban it?
      Classic 1st world attitude - most of us live in the 3rd world, buddy.
      Try to stop us fishing and you will end up in a local ditch - go on - try it... lol

    • @broadbeanification
      @broadbeanification Před 3 lety

      @@the-selfish-meme7585 still using the terms 1st world and 3rd world? Trying to appear worldly and wise while being outdated and problematic? I get your point, but less economically developed nations are doing far less damage than European nations or Japan for example. Fishing quotas do need to exist and internationally observed. Enforcement will always be difficult, but economic sanctions can be deployed. Inuit people for example do not live in what you call a 3rd world country, but they do rely heavily on meat and fish for survival. You’re half right, but you’re both missing the real point of sustainability.

    Just to confirm - the gas is carbon neutral because growing new grass replaces the emissions from burning the gas? Except you mentioned that the grass was already there. And not being burned. Or releasing carbon into the atmosphere. Or have I missed something?

    • @nickcoates1767
      @nickcoates1767 Před 3 lety

      Three things you should consider.
      1. Grass is often cut anyway
      2. At the end of the season uncut grass stems and leaves die and are rotted by bacteria and fungal organisms which release the carbon to the atmosphere.
      3. The assumption is renewable gas is replacing fossil gas.

    Without disagreeing in fact with almost anything Dale said, I see things differently. I think limits to growth is false because earth is a big ball of molten rock; and that magma/ electricity/ hydrogen technology applied globally, with a view to a prosperous AND sustainable future, is the only truly adequate approach. The sheer scale of magma energy allows that we can transcend limits to growth. Not only could magma supply world energy demand carbon free, many times over forever, but provide surplus energy to desalinate, irrigate, recycle and capture carbon. In such a context, farming can be conducted to resist desertification, irrigating wastelands to feed cattle, to cultivate arable, habitable land with value. A landfill is a goldmine of resources for want of the energy to process the material. Hydropnics, aquponics all become far more cost effective given abundant clean energy. More energy means more choice going forward. Less, less reliable, and therefore more expensive energy - as a basis then, to afford the second and third generation of infrastructure charts an entropic spiral of decline. We need massive amounts of clean energy to secure the future. Not veganism and wind!
