This whole story is making me emotional.
What gets to me is that Hideo is making a game about making connections with other even when you feel apart, and his whole journey to create his studio was him feeling alone but then all the connections he's made over the years supported him and gave him what he needed to create his achievements. There's the whole part of his team not understanding the game and questioning the appeal but they still went with it and kept at it until they found themselves having fun.
It's just so beautiful that Kojima couldn't get a loan because he had no actual results, but then he found a banker who was a fan of his work and gave him the loan.
When he wanted a certain building he was denied because his company wasn't publicly traded, but one of the owners was a fan so he was allowed to get the office.

Someone once told me you know a good movie when you can watch it multiple times and get something new every time. That's what playing a Kojima game is like. The first time is kinda confusing, but on repeat playthroughs, things make a lot more sense. He's a master at giving just the right amount of info to keep you curious but not give away the twist till the very end. Not to mention the multi-hour long cutscenes that could be entire feature-length movies themselves (not everybody's cup of tea, I get it, but I love them.) He really does push the medium forward, it's crazy to think this was his vision since the NES days. So ahead of his time, but luckily, technology caught up to him. Can't wait for DS2 and OD.

The fact that Hideo Kojima ran into every possible wall and still managed to climb over it and thrive goes to show how passion and kindness go so far in making it. His vision and connections built upon each other to help him achieve success, and because of that we got to experience more of his work while reinforcing that very image of him.
This world is full of struggle and no people, whenever there is creative work at play the risk is always substantial. Because people *have* to like it, otherwise your value and worth gets thrown out the window, unlike if you were to help create medicine or food.
What we can get from this tale is that no matter the circumstance, as long as you have a passion and strive for more, never let go of it even within your toughest struggle, because there are others like you who will see the value of your efforts and together bring forth your true potential. A great video!

In the second paragraph you're absolutely right -- from a purely economic standpoint people should appreciate your work, and costs should be lesser than revenue. Kojima with all his passions failed as we know, since DS underperformed in terms of profits. So he's not a very successful creator in this regard. And that's understandable -- Kojima is just a talentless hack who gained his notoriety on the backs of others. All his later games are complete BS, and just a pale imitation of what 'he' had done before. Those who don't get it are just clueless.

This makes me want to buy Death Stranding now to support him and his studio. 5 years (and counting) of chronic environmental violence have given me C-PTSD, forcing me to constantly have to distract myself with a torrent of stimuli to avoid the extreme fear and violence. Death Stranding, as far as I could see, is a pretty calm game, it doesn't seem to be something that will help my anxiety. But after seeing how 99.9% of Japan collectively threw him in the dirt despite being the most renowned gaming director in the industry by far and for good reason (in an industry that makes more money than all media and music combined), after seeing that culture try to stifle all his life's dreams and potential to improve humanity's lives out of pure uncooperative prejudice...
Studios like Kojima seem like something you have to proritize supporting even if it hurts you. Because the consequences of letting this life-ruining economy keep it's undeserved power will be far more painful than any other event.
Do the math, trying to understand human suffering even if you haven't experienced much. One traumatizing event is less painful than a slave's lifestyle in a lifetime. Some personal hardship is not as bad as an entire society deprived of self-control for wellbeing purposes, if for no other reason than that society would create millions more cases of hardship in time. The economy lost the power necessary to improve it's collective behaviors enough to stop it from cannibalizing itself. Supporting independent studios like Kojima's, workplaces that are not fully controlled by a corporate contract solely interested in maximal greed, is the only way to fight back this tenacious anthropophagy.

The helpful structures social mechanic is still SO cool to me. I'm kinda surprised Fromsoft didn't go deeper with their online interactions after seeing Death Stranding, natural fit.
Those games also have a strong sense of loneliness pierced by the levity and comradery of the online messages, even if you choose not to work together directly.
It feels very satisfying when I know I just saved someone from skipping a checkpoint before doing something that may cause them to lose that progress etc. And of course there is that glorious other side of the coin, ruthless invaders and malicious messages are an absolute staple, it's gameplay incorporated into the narrative in classic fashion.

First of all as an obvious metal gear fan, and someone who loves themes that Kojima explored, death stranding really did had flaws but not at mechanics at gameplay ironicly at acting story pacing, and world building logic, it litteraly needs to its own video to explain this but for short i think sam uniting world without any ideology or belief sounded really wrong and illogical, people change their entire mindset just because you help them ? at the game rather than we are uniting people we are litteraly just giving internet connection to locals, funny enough Sam also doesnt give any emotions properly he is mostly has one facial mimic ( why da heck im here "look") and almost nothing else, i can say the same for rest of the cast too, i really didnt like the acting i cant see any mimic properly and even when they do it looks strange ( i think they are trying to give A24 movies strangeness feeling which looks ridicilous ) , characters just looks strangely too screen, and omg the dialogues, does kojima realy thinks anyone even the greatest minds talk like this in real life, people at death stranding does not have character but concepts and at a game that you dont have a enemy to defeat ( I know rigs exist but he is not the main concern ) and main focus of the game is the people we meet, i think it really fails to do so, I can understand the fustration of people who says they didnt like gameplay but i think they need to give it a chance and gain access to main map of the world ( i think its at 3rd or 4rd act of the game ) which becomes something very extra ordinary and i have never seen before.

Thank you for the video. But a little bit sensationalist for no reason.
For example, his family was against him making a new studio? Oh, please. Western devs thought he was crazy? You got to be kidding. He is arguably _the_ most famous game designer/developer in the history of the industry. I bet the moment rumors were out he was leaving his publisher, offers came flying in. That's why Guerilla Games just gave him their engine _with_ the source code no strings attached. Cory Barlog (director of God of War 2018) talked about how when Kojima walked out on the stage like Magneto with the tiles flying to his feet it was something else (that stage walk clip was shown in this video). Kojima has huge weight in the industry.
So no, his family wouldn't have been against him and certainly no dev, Western or otherwise, would laugh at him and call him crazy for starting his own studio.
Look at, for example, how many ex-Battlefield devs started their own studios. All of them got immediate financial support. Many, many, big name devs went on to start their own studios. Any publisher would have wanted Kojima if only to slap his name on a game. Can you imagine how much coverage that game would get? And you can guarantee a million units in sales based on his name alone.
There are other nitpickings here and there, but I shouldn't overstep. You compiles a nice video and I didn't. It was entertaining. I just wanted to like it more if it was a tiny more genuine than sensational.
Cheers, and sorry for the critique.
