What date is it, really? The Hindu Calendar

  • When exactly does the new year begin? That depends on who is answering. For many North Indians, Diwali is New Year’s Day. But it falls on a different date each year. April 14th is Puthandu, Vishu, Baisakhi, and Bihu - the New Year’s Day for Tamils, Malayalees, Punjabis, and Assamese. But Ugadi and Gudi Padawa - the New Year’s Day for Telugus, Kannadigas and Marathis falls on a different date each year. How are these dates determined and why are calendars so different? This is the story of how ancient Indians and people across the world measured time.

    A few clarifications:
2:28 - Strictly speaking, the Moon takes only 27.3 days to orbit the Earth. Because the Earth and the Moon are constantly moving, sunlight illuminates the Moon from a different angle every day. Therefore, to a person observing from Earth, a full Moon appears only 29.5 days after the previous full Moon. Our ancients knew this, but rounded it off to 30 days for operational convenience!
3:57 - Pope Gregory was merely fine-tuning the concept of leap year introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE. Caesar’s astronomers had "over-compensated" the leap year, because a solar year is actually 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds, not 365 days, 6 hours as approximated by them. Pope Gregory re-adjusted this overcompensation by declaring every 100th year a non-leap year, and every 400th year a leap year! Pope Gregory is therefore remembered as the “inventor” of the modern calendar!

Most calendars start new year with the Chitra month.
-> Tamils have Chitra month as the first month when the sun actually enters Aries. That happens around April 14.
-> Bengalis and Punjabis celebrate the same but when they call it as Bihu or Baisakhi, it kinda is a misnomer because Vaisakha is the name of the 2nd month which occurs when the sun enters Taurus but the actual event is the sun entering Aries. (Possibly due to a confusion)
-> New moon following Lunar calenders (Marathi, Telugu, Kannada) celebrate Chitra starting as new year but since they follow the moon for month beginnings, they concentrate on when the closest new moon is. That is why while adding the leap months every 3 years, Ugadi will coincide with Puthandu/Bihu/Baisakhi.
-> Full moon following lunar calenders generally follow the rule that the month starts on full moon and the star/constellation overlapped by the moon at that point is the month. Like Full moon overlapping the Chitra star is Chitra month.
Solar calenders too have taken the same months of the lunar calender but defined the beginning differently.

Your site is good and helpful to most of our young people who have not been taught or have forgotten our traditions and mores and the reasons for them. A video on the importance of Nakshathra and Raashi for birthdays will be helpful. To keep our traditional knowledge alive, our family celebrates the Gregorian calendar birthday with superficial trappings of cards, wishes, etc. The nakshathra birthday is celebrated with an oil bath, special traditional food, new clothes, visit to temple and elders of the family. Birthday messages are always “ Aashirvaad” and “ Dheerga Aayushman Bhava”.
But let me confess, it is a hard struggle to keep the attractions of parties, friends, dinner at restaurants, and all that nonsense from swamping our own meaningful celebrations.

In Ancient India they all have the Same Calendar but decided to have their own New Year in different Days.
That explains why India is United yet have diversity.

Odias also traditionally follow the Sun, although this calendar is unique in India as it is issued by the Gajapati ruler of Kalinga( odisha) for aeons now, according to his reign.
Our new year( religious) too starts at 13-15 April each year on Pana/Mahabishubha Sankranti, where we drink Baelaw fruit( Pana) and offer it to the Sun god (Surjyaw), Sri Jagannathji and Tulasi plant, even giving it to animals and near relatives, Baelaw/Bel fruit is very auspicious in Odia culture, which is mixed with coconut, curd, Jaggery, pepper and drunk. We pray for prosperity year round. The financial new year is around September, I believe.

Bel Pana is popular in Bengal too. My father drinks it every day in summer, and eats Bel Morobba in winters.

Our Maithili New Year also starts on 14th April ~ we eat Basi Bhaat and Bori on that day while stoves are given rest for whole day.
We water plants , sprinkle Achin-jol on every thing around us.

@@aritrabhattacharyya8797its actually popular all over eastern India, thats not the point. Point is religiously, bael fruit is auspicious as its a symbol of the sun and lord Jagannatha, which is unique to Odia culture. And what is morabba?i havent eaten it, so cant comment.
Edit- We call it Ambabattaw, battaw/sawdha is used for murabba like items, in Odia.
Murabba is not native Odia term.

@@akashdhar9412in Odisha, the financial year starts in September( Bhadrapada shukla dwadasi) and the day is called Sunian in Odia( literally zero, empty in Odia).
Religious Odia year is called Utkaliyasanaw.

    Please note a few things..
    * you should have mentioned about the 'adhika maasa' which is an additional month that is included in the Lunar calender once in every 3 years, to make up for the short cycles of the moon's rotation & revolution.
    * Coastal Karnataka (like Udupi, Mangaluru districts) celebrate Soura (solar) Yugadhi on 14th/15th April, whereas Kannadigas in interior parts of the peninsula follow the Lunar calender. So, in Karnataka, both yugadhis are celebrated depending on the region.
    * Its pronunced 'yugadhi' (which means beginning of a new yuga), not 'ugadhi'.

Great video with one crucial big factual miss - Diwali is not the new year for majority of North Indians it is in fact same day as gudi padwa and ugadi and is called Chaitra Pratipada which follows Vikram Samvat. It is also the beginning of Chaitra Navratra culminating on Ram Navami.
