  • This is breaking news (on Earth). It happened millions of years ago in space. We have an as-yet unconfirmed supernova in the galaxy M95.
This is not our final M95 video, just a news update. Thanks to Nik Szymanek who imaged the object for us at short notice and in testing conditions (what a nuisance Mars can be).
Video features Professor Mike Merrifield and Meghan Gray.

I made some quick calculations. If you look at Mars and put a finger close to your eye.

Brady should definitely get "science journalist of the year", assuming such an award exists! Great rapid response getting the video out to us Brady, thank you! I immediately went out with my binoculars to look at Mars. Of course I knew I probably wouldn't even see M95 let alone the supernova, but somehow it was good to know I was looking at where this happened... wish I had a good telescope :)

Thanks Brady for posting this, helped me to clarify my knowledge i need for my 'A' Level. Michael thanks for the info the the supernova as i didn't know that, and Meghan for the apparent magnitude. I wonder Brady could you post a video on either this channel or Sixty symbols, a video about magnitudes. thanks :)

38 million light years is close enough that we can resolve individual stars? Wow!
