But Bruce Smith's inability to stand up against the power running game of the top NFC east teams was a big part. So there’s a saying in football, especially among linemen.
    “Low man wins”
Aaron is shorter than pretty much every linemen he faces, so he gets all the leverage. Not only does he get leverage from being short, he also benches 600 pounds and squats almost a THOUSAND. He is a scary human being

There are different kinds of defensive tackles, but regardless, Donald is pretty undersized for one. Typical DTs are anywhere from 290-320 maybe, but there is the nosetackle position which is also a DT but their role is pretty much to consume blockers and take up space to stop the run. Nosetackles can be up to 350 pounds or even more. Even though he’s “undersized”, Donald has a crazy blend of quickness and strength that makes him tough for lineman to handle.
One thing I don’t think this video mentioned was that sacks and pressures are harder to come by for defensive tackles compared to defensive ends, but Donald is so good he gets to the quarterback as often as the best defensive ends, which is extremely impressive.

Hes statistically unique too. Most stat lines you see of 10-20 sacks are typical of very good to elite EDGE players. These are defensive ends or linebackers that specialize in the pass rush. Guys like Von Miller, Derrick Thomas, Reggie White, etc. But for an interior defensive lineman, that kind of production is completely unheard of. 5+ sacks is elite pass rushing production by any interior d lineman. 20.5 is just beyond absurd. Aaron Donalds a freak man

A large part of his success is the signature move he has adopted from a previous rams d lineman in robert quinn, a move called the "jump chop" where you take one step off the line to get the guard to bite and extend his hands, then you jump off that foot and swim your inside arm over and bat away both the guards hands while also propelling you past him leading to an easy sack or tfl.

Seems like a decent dude, doesn't talk trash or show boat and consistently dominates. It's impossible not to like our respect him. As for being undersized, the main reason people were against him was because they assumed bigger Offensive Tackles with significantly longer arms would neutralize him. They were wrong. His explosive speed has him inside those long arms and his absurd power/drive has bigger guys on their butt before they know what hit them. That's not fair... to Donald. They know exactly who hit them.

If you're bigger and can get underneath your opponent it'll give you a huge advantage, but with Aaron being 6'0 it's almost impossible for any bigger/taller lineman to get underneath him to win the leverage battle, especially with his strength

@4:00 defensive tackles can be quite a wide range of sizes.
They can be any height really, 6 foot is just about as short as you can get and still carry the weight for the position. Short can be an advantage because it creates leverage against taller opponents.
As for weight they can be anywhere from 270-400 pounds.
The reason for the massive weight range is because there are a lot of different styles of interior defensive linemen. Some are more about attacking the backfield and causing havoc while others are about just clogging up as much real estate as possible.
Defensive tackle just means they line up on the interior of the defensive line (between the offensive tackles) most of the time.
Donald can do it all, but most guys his size would be in the one gap attack the offense role to try and cause problems in the backfield while the gigantic guys you are thinking of are more interested on being a massive road block

There are only 2 players in NFL history that continued to play at a high level from a 3tech-ish DT position and that is Sapp and Randle who are the only 2 interior linemen to record a double digit sack season in their 30s. If he can keep up just 80% into his 30s there will be no question that he is the GOAT. Sapp who has a strong argument for GOAT already agrees that it belongs to Donald.

The Heisman trophy is shamelessly biased in favor of offensive players - specifically quarterbacks and running backs, with the occasional wide receiver tossed in.
The most recent predominantly defensive Heisman winner was Charles Woodson, in 1997. He was a cornerback and kick returner. He also played wide receiver in certain situations (very unusual, even in college). Without the wide receiver statistics, he would not have won the award.
Exceptionally talented and dominant defensive players, even interior linemen, are occasionally nominated as Heisman finalists. But they are rarely considered serious contenders. It would be like an old school centre back winning the Ballon 'Or. It just doesn't happen.
Defensive tackles typically don't achieve big statistical tallies. Their primary job is to occupy space and blockers, hold ground against the run, and shorten up the opposing pocket against the pass. This frees up linebackers, defensive ends, and safeties to make plays. A defensive tackle might play brilliantly without recording a single measurable statistic.
For Donald to rank amongst league statistical leaders from his position, is very, very impressive.
The most similar to him is a retired player named John Randle. He was physically a near clone to Aaron Donald, perhaps a bit lighter. He also had doubters. As the story goes, he cheated when he was weighed and measured during his evaluation. He supposedly put two ten pound weights in his shorts and stuffed 1 inch lift inserts in his socks. No idea whether that's true, but it's a good story.

1:59 Literally none of those schools are “small FCS schools” lmao. 2 are in the MAC which is Group of 5 FBS Aka Tier 2 and Pitt is in the ACC and was Donald’s last 2 years once moving from the Big East. Rutgers is in the Big 10. They’re “smaller” schools in those conferences but not even close to FCS. ACC and Big 10 are “power 5” schools. Which are Tier 1 FBS conferences. Ohio State and Clemson are in the Big 10 and ACC. The REAL shock would’ve been picking Toledo (Tier 2) over Pitt (Tier 1). This guy really didn’t know Wtf he was on about with that section right there. The rest is good

Exactly. You don't finish with 20.5 sacks as a DT. Those numbers don't even tell the story of his impact on every play. I'll still always love John Randle but Aaron Donald is a whole 'nother level of player.

This is not your fault because you're new to the game, but saying 20.5 sacks in a single season is like "Safety stats" is a terrible comparison...Since you brought up Troy (first name basis with everyone LUL), Polamalu played 12 Seasons but only recorded 12 career sacks....I know what you were going for there but Troy was known as the "Tasmanian Devil"- but a "Sackmaster" he was not.

  • @FuckYoutubeAndGoogle

Lmao 20.5 sacks is definetly not safety stats, safeties don't get anywhere near that many sacks. (Troy Polamalu had 12 sacks in his entire career) It's elite edge rusher production.
