Big Block Nova Is A RIPPER - First Drive!

- Spring is FINALLY here! I always love this time of year because all the hot rods come out of hibernation. This past winter I did a few upgrades to my 1971 Nova ss. I installed a tunnel rammed big block with a Muncie 4 speed transmission.
The swap went rather quick, so there was still snow on the ground when it was time for a "test drive". Freezing temperatures and race slicks didn't make for much of a first drive.
Well the snow has melted and it was time to drive this new combination for the first time. I gotta say, this light little car with a rat motor is a ripper on the street! A little front heavy and pushes though the corners, but over all it will make for a really fun driver.

Same, first old car project I had a few years ago, was wire wheeling and painting every part that came off.
Never even planned on restoring it, just had that "while I'm in there" mentality.
Watching Dan and guys like him, I realized you just have to wrench on it, so you can thrash on it.
Made a ton more progress with the new project than I ever did with the old one.

Dan, you will have full vacuum advance all the time with the line placed on the tunnel ram. It will run better placed on the metering block.
yep vacum advance needs ported vacum to work properly
Actually with manifold source it’s full vacuum advance at idle, above throttle plate (metering plate port) brings in advance when you crack the throttle open, only difference. Every engine combo is different, some need full advance at idle some don’t. Most early cars before emissions era used manifold vacuum. My 360 Duster with low compression, power steering and auto trans will not idle in gear with ported vacuum. My 400 powered AT A/C Camaro idles smoother with ported vacuum even with accessories on, it’s. a 9:5 engine with mild cam. In my opinion It really depends on engine combo.

To cover that distributor , take a two liter pop bottle and cut one end off of it and slide it down over the cap and wires . Works equally well for four wheeling . 4:10 gears at a minimum with a tunnel rammed Rat Motor , for real fun try 5:13s around town .

I think a lot of us are as surprised as Mur is about how well the '57 Roadster turned out. Love the Nova. I've owned a couple and put a 454/TH400 in one of them. Sold it before I ever drove it while it was still 'in progress' in the garage. People like big blocks in Nova's...and everything else. Keep up the good work! :)
I love a lot of American cars and also like big blocks , Mustang's dodges and camaros 😆 And I like the work you've done as well because you've got some really nice motors m8 ,

Dan you really amaze me you are so talented. I love all your rides but that Nova is one sweet machine. Had approximately 450 muscle cars pickups motorcicles over last 50 years but believe miss my 68 chevelle ss most. Had a 454 488 posi 4 gear latter bar's n 50s. 3rd day engine locked up traded it 150.00 dollars for 69 427/390 horse put 373 posi was never out run on street. Your Nova brought back lots of memories thanks for sharing enjoy ya'll have fun

I love the Nova! Once I was ripping around in my 70 Nova and I got pulled over and got a ticket for "causing unreasonable noise"...lol!
My interesting tickets was for "Excessive rotation of the tires" LOL Yup, that's a thing.

Gosh that brings back memories! My first car over 40 years ago was a big block 69 Camaro with manual steering and 4 speed. I could tell you had a manual tiller. Big blocks make the car a completely different animal. This would be the car to perfect and preserve on this summer.
Exactly! That's what I've always said, a "different animal" vs. one equipped with an auto trans. Back in the day all the hipo Mopars I owned and drove on the street had a) big block wedge engine (and once a 426 Street Hemi), b) manual steering and c) manual brakes. No power-robbing accessories period!
Dan the Man! That Nova is soooo cool! I agree ya probably need to put a lower gear in it and I would also convert that ol points distributor to electric pick up, works so much better. Keep on keeping on!😎💯
