The difference between how Jimmy Darmody and Meyer Lansky answer that "Who are you" question shows a big reason why Lansky made it and Darmody didn't.
Darmody ran down a resume(that Rothstein likely already knew) and revealed info that had nothing to do with whether Rothstein could rely on him.
Lansky gave Nucky Thompson a story of perseverance through adversity, told him what he could do, and gave him the numbers to prove his worth.
Lansky showed he could hang with the big dogs. Darmody exposed himself as a careless child in comparison, hence Rothstein's insult about children saying "unexpected and amusing things."
    Great writing.

This was a good perception and analysis of events. However, Arnold Rothstein was going to say no regardless because he didn't know whether or not he was being set up. He reveals this to nucky in a conversation later. I think Arnold Rothstein was referring to the business proposal in general when he implied that Jimmy was the child saying unexpected and amusing things.

I know this is old but after reading the comments I thought I should offer another perspective: A.R. expected Jimmy to tell him about himself. He started with being a businessman and a veteran. But the problem was he was a veteran than a thief i.e., A.R.'s comment about being a bandit in the woods. In essence Jimmy couldn't be trusted because you're a family man that got married after children, and became a thief after being a war hero. So he wasn't jabbing at him being stupid for marrying after children, or for talking about himself he was just saying he left too much room for error...everywhere, in every decision

    • @Michelle-ju6vs

AR knew that he was trying to take over Nucky’s operation and knew it would be a stupid decision to make a deal with him after he got bested by Nucky just months before. He was only breathing because Nucky and AR made a deal and AR knew that Nucky had the political reach to get his indictment quashed while Jimmy had nothing to offer aside from the booze. When he says that he doesn’t have kids but he’s told they often say unexpected and amusing things, he’s mocking Jimmy’s age and his pitch. AR was too smart to take Jimmy seriously.

@@FirewallMightyHero Human beings have a need (probably based in biology) for something that we will call the "power process." This is closely related to the need for power (which is widely recognized) but is not quite the same thing. The power process has four elements. The three most clear-cut of these we call goal, effort and attainment of goal. (Everyone needs to have goals whose attainment requires effort, and needs to succeed in attaining at least some of his goals.) The fourth element, autonomy, is more difficult to define and may not be necessary for every individual. But most people need a greater or lesser degree of autonomy in working toward their goals. Their efforts must be undertaken on their own initiative and must be under their own direction and control.
Consider the hypothetical case of a man who can have anything he wants just by wishing for it. Such a man has power, but he will develop serious psychological problems. At first he will ostensibly have fun, but by and by he will become acutely bored and demoralized. Eventually he may become clinically depressed. History shows that leisured aristocracies tend to become decadent. This is not true of fighting aristocracies that have to struggle to maintain their power. But leisured, secure aristocracies that have no need to exert themselves usually become bored, hedonistic and demoralized, even though they have power. This shows that power is not enough. One must have goals toward which to exercise one's power.
Everyone has goals; if nothing else, to obtain the physical necessities of life: food, water and whatever clothing and shelter are made necessary by the climate. But the leisured aristocrat obtains these things without effort. Hence his boredom and demoralization.
Non-attainment of important goals results in death if the goals are physical necessities, and in frustration if non-attainment of the goals is compatible with survival. Consistent failure to attain goals throughout life results in defeatism, low self-esteem or depression.
Thus, in order to avoid serious psychological problems, a human being needs goals whose attainment requires effort, and he must have a reasonable rate of success in attaining his goals.

Didn’t realize until a couple of years ago that a lot of the scenes where Jimmy is in the frame by himself talking he’s actually filming that scene solo with the other actors not present. Apparently this was because he couldn’t remember a lot of his lines or just refused to so they had to film some of his scenes separately without the other actors. Must’ve been a pain for production.

Wowwww... REALLY? I just randomly stumbled on this video due to my tvs algorithm.. I never got a chance to get into B.E. even tho i was a die hard SOPRANOS FAN.
So on occasion I'll watch clips.. maybe that's how this scene came across me
But me knowing...How great of a character actor MICHAEL PITT is.. it pains me to read this.
You are right to ..its 2023 and I can't remember the last film or tv series he was in.
Theres another actor ... RELATIVELY new .... Clayton Cardenas from the show THE MAYANS which is a spin off from the SONS OF ANARCHY. Who I thought was a great actor with alotta potential...being that he hadn't had many roles before landing A CO STARRING ROLE on that show ..
anyways..the show became a favorite and has developed a loyal fanbase...But... BY THE 3rd season this guy was having the same issues ... showing up late ...forgetting his lines .... some said he'd be high ...and then get confrontational with some of the other actors..and apparently it was so bad ..that literally some of the other actors on the show... would give the creator ultimatums...that either he goes or they do...the difference tho is...this is his first big gig.. as a working actor..so its actually kinda crazy that in his first big opportunity he already has a crazy sense of entitlement.
the appetite of the EGO is sometimes what drives certain ppl... so they supercede keeping it fed before all else ..
      Sad sad situation.
Hope HE GETS IT TOGETHER. I'm assuming we'd all love to see the dude in something

And everything he says, it's like a child standing up in class reciting something, not believing any of it. His business demeanor is just awful. Rothstein is the kind of guy who likes to deal with charismatic businessmen who are sharp, who know what to say and when to say it, and who don't just write checks.

Arnold knew from the jump that Jimmy was no where near the business caliber to even be in the same room as him.
