Thats fine, when the rights are actually equal. I think the information that has come out of the Inquiry into abuse of children in state and faith based "care" should be read by everyone who thinks equal rights exist in this country for Maori. What has been allowed to happen to children, primarily Maori, in this country is horrific. In my like uh opinion... this country is racists as (what Taika said)

Another example of misleading journalism by RNZ - the title to this posting is blatantly wrong. David Seymour clearly views the Treaty as a relevant consideration for Pharmac, he merely provides the context for when he believes it to be so. RNZ is an appalling public agency. I was a loyal listener from age 15, to about 50. I'm now 58 and cannot bear to listen to its now biased (left leaning), ill informed coverage. Shame on you RNZ for betraying your independent mandate.

Interesting that people think Te Tiriti shouldn't be a part of government policy. Maybe we should have given it a fancier name... like Magna Carta, or a Declaration of Independence (oh hang on...) or maybe the Constitutional Bill of Rights? It's this country's founding document between the people that were here and the new people arriving in the country. If this country had the same kind of agreement with every new member of our society as they arrived in the country, we'd be a heck of a lot better off. Its actually an extremely forward looking document, in a very succinct format. I think its amazing. I think the issue with many people is the uncomfortable realisation that the Treaty was written specifically to protect the rights of the people that were already here... if you want to call them indigenous feel free... or not.

Doesnt specify or divide by race like the minority maori party (TPM) want you to believe. I whakapapa maori and believe in equal rights for NZ citizens regardless of your skin colour and we all have equal responsibility under the law as mentioned in article 3.

@@SayHiIzzy who were the parties in Te Tiriti? "Ko Wikitoria te Kuini o Ingarani i tana mahara atawai ki nga Rangatira me nga Hapu o Nu Tirani".
What was the context of "ki nga tangata katoa o Nu Tirani"?
Ko te Kuini o Ingarani ka wakarite ka wakaae ki nga Rangatira ki nga hapu (to the Chiefs, to the hapu) - ki nga tangata katoa o Nu Tirani te tino rangatiratanga o o ratou wenua o ratou kainga me o ratou taonga katoa. Interesting that you've only quoted part of the sentence as in its entirety, the sentence is talking about the chiefs and "hapu" that were living in NZ in 1840.
Throughout Te Tiriti the parties of Te Tiriti are identified- Wikitoria and the Rangatira and hapu of the wenua (land). In the preamble the parties were identified as rangatira Maori, also nga Rangatira o te wakaminenga (the confederation of chiefs who put together He Whakaputenga - aka the Declaration of Independence 1835).
Article 1 starts of by speaking of the chiefs of te wakaminenga me nga rangatira katoa hoki... ( the chiefs of the united tribes and all chiefs)
Article 2 identifies Wikitoria and the chiefs of te wakaminenga and all the chiefs of NZ.
Article 3 is clear- "ka tiakina e te Kuini o Ingarani nga tangata Maori katoa o Nu Tireni"
The Queen of England and the Maori people of NZ. Maori are guaranteed the rights and privileges of British subjects.
I also believe in equal rights. I believe in integrity in politics and I believe in honesty. Te Tiriti was an agreement between the people that were already in Aotearoa in 1840, identified as the chiefs and the hapu, and Wikitoria. If you choose to ignore the clear identification of the Treaty partners in Article 3 (Te Kuini o Ingarani and tangata Maori) I think you're being really disingenuous and deliberately misinterpreting Te Tiriti to suit your own personal agenda... as is David Seymour.
