“Your Tactic Is Just Bad” (Save Your Saves)

- I have had the chance to diagnose a lot of different problems over the year we’ve been saving saves. There are always complex finances, scouting conundrums, and a wide variety of random awfulness that Football Manager can throw at you from time to time. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to blame a tactic on FM for as much as I am able to in this save your saves video. I know tactics are difficult to get right, but I suppose sometimes you follow your heart and it’s just wrong.
What is very interesting is that in the same save with the struggling tactic, the scouting for wonderkids has gone incredibly well. It was done with great skill in a way that sets an example for other people looking to build a team in a similar way. That is, the best way because signing a bucket of wonderkids and developing a golden core of players is just the best way to go about business in Football Manager - 30-year-olds be damned. I lost my save after my laptop died recently. I was devastated until I remembered that I submitted my save for saving. I was able to recover it! So even though I wasn't in the video, my save has been saved.

Going from someone that got Wrexham to the Premier League and is scared of being relegated despite being only 2 games in, to that Northampton save with the board confidence at an F really divides peoples opinion of the definition of “struggling” 😂

I would love to see Zealand do a national save. I know he can't go scout & loan crazy with it but would be great to see his tactics for developing U23s into first teamers and his tournament management skills

national team managers don't develop players.
That Northampton save is what all the saves on here should be like. Not the "oh I can't beat the top teams or win every champions league." Ones
Tbh I feel the CL ones were actually genuinely stuck while the Northampton guy was actually shooting himself in the foot. Look for overlap with FB on support and Wing back on automatic? They're never going to make those runs to the byline! BWM on defend + anchor on defend? He's basically packing his own half and then wondering why he can't get results lol
I'll tell about you to my children and grandchildren, whenever i play Fm 2035 to Fm 2045 and more. We will find your home to ask for forbidden knowledge of Fm's and you're gonna say i vowed to never touch that thing again. We'll convince you at the end
Have you and your team ever considered a Trophy Case type of video, or a Praising Your Save?
A way to show off cool saves and major accomplishments sounds cool. I have a decent idea of what it would look like, and I think it would be entertaining.
It comes down to whether or not you'd enjoy doing it, probably.
People cheat.
They use the editor, replay games etc. Can't prove any of them are real.

Im playing with heerenveen in 2023/24 szn. They have like a striker who is 6'7" and jumping reach of 20 and is the tallest team in the league. So, I recruited a bunch of more tall players and two or three short players who can cross the ball. In the first szn, I mostly targetted setpieces and finished 4th and the next yr won the league

I was in Ethans position in an Iceland save, had 2 months to save my job. Did pretty much what Zealand recommended and survived, got promoted the next season and qualified for the europa league the year after that.
Definitely gonna need an update for that Northampton save

The Hereenveen tactic was horrific
In relation to the Wrexham save, I got Derby a surprise double promotion from League 1 and I had a wage bill of £17m p/a 😂 safe to say I got absolutely shat on 😂
you mean playing a lower engagement line whilst also asking your team to prevent short goalkeeper distribution isn't the best idea? Minus the fact that his midfield hangs out with his centerbacks all game.. yeh its one of the worst tactics I have ever seen. The instructions in combination with the player roles make absolutely no sense.
You're so right, Z. I've never won a game trying to play a low block. I can replay the same game against the same team and will just 4-0 with a low block but lose 1-0 with a high line
I put this on one of your previous videos and it got removed I think, but just to say FM have confirmed that dynamic youth rating does not work as you think it does. They've said that a club team doing well from the league may even reduce the youth rating. It sounds like a very complex system designed to reflect real life, not reward a player's success in-game.
Tbh it makes sense. A club only really affects its own growth in a significant way. A national team winning or doing well in a tournament would have more widespread repercussions. From reading rhe various SI forum threads many seem to miss a fairly obvious thing though. England didn't instantly benefit from their popularity at Italia 90, because the kids that watched Gazza and Co, wouldn't arrive in game for up to a decade later. If we'd won the Euros for example, the kids that were inspired by that wouldn't be coming through as youth intake until a decade or so afterwards.
@@davidrichards613 I can't remember, did they say national team success does impact it? I thought it was just some really odd stuff that made it a bit random. I think it does make sense though for the youth rating to improve a bit and the game importance also to grow if a nation has a lot of success - that would probably end up with big countries ending up the best but that's fine
@@LankyLegs101 I imagine that's how it'll balance out as nations get more into the game. The US is climbing fast, China will be a decade or more behind but climb they shall. The odd nation will have golden generations that may in turn boost them again. For example if Haaland and Odegaard helped Norway go deep into a tournament they could inspire the nations children to shoot for similar goals.
Another thing to consider and it ties into something Zealand said on stream yesterday, is that poverty and adversity often drive this growth. The same way a club needs to struggle to enable their young players to come into the team and flourish, some of the higher youth rated nations are those where young players fuel the game almost entirely and where the kids have little but football for entertainment. Whilst richer nations will still have players that have that ambition to be the best, being poor and having football be your only outlet will lead to far greater numbers of good players IMHO.
@@davidrichards613 yeah, that's a great point. Kids like Messi, Agüero, Maradona, Tévez and so many more came from very humble beginnings. Using Argentina as an example as I'm an argie, there are very few (right now none that I can think of) top tier players from my country that were born in the capital of Buenos Aires, where most of the wealthy families are located.
I wonder if SI has ever put thought to that fact.

I’ve found these videos very helpful in my personal saves where I’ve now learned a lot of new tricks that help in my quest to conquer the game with cork city

why would you only have 1 loan player for the first season in the Premier League? You should definitely be maxing out your loan player limit and these should be some of your best players until you have been in the prem for a few seasons where you are able to reinvest that money into high potential young players.

The Norway save. Older players seem to keep attributes until they retire. Mbappe is 35/6 and still has 18s for pace and acceleration, plus he doesn't look like any other physical has dropped.

@@tavforpresident3064 won the 2nd league in my first season. Finished 9th/13th/4th and now 1st in season 2025/2026 by 1 point over feyenoord to which i drew in the last match of the season. Also won the cup in season 25/26. Sydney van hooijdonk, who i signed as an end of contract signing from bologna scored 28 goals in 30 appearances in my last season. I also sold my striker, dallinga after 3.5 seasons for 9.5 million, which helped a lot.

That guys Heerenveen tactic would be so much better if he just played a genuine 3-5-2. id also adjust the lower line of engagement to standard, i find that it works really well with AF and an attacking midfielder as it gives them space to run into. id also get rid of all the "in possesion" TI's and just run the team on a positive mentality.

20:04 Besides praising their conduct, you can also praise their last game, their recent form and their training/development. Each of these actions will give them a boost in moral if they're not unhappy with you.
Sometimes FM is weird, they comeback insulting your standards😂
Just make sure you time them right as well. As some of those go away or deteriorate after a bit, so the morning before a game is ideal. Also asking to recommend signing works and is less risky than form/last game.
@@bashir5668 I've had that happen sometimes, so I usually praise training / last game / form if the rating is 7,5+...maybe a bit less for form
@@Hyde_Hill I know, but I really do love squad depth and FM doesn't give you proper tools in dealing with unhappy players. If they start 9-10 games out of 12, they come to me saying why don't they play more and sometimes I wanna rest them for the next game or give them 1 game breaks if they don't play well but you don't have these arguments. I've asked for recommended signings, but they don't come up with names. Is there a backlash if you don't sign who they recommend?
@@liviumarila5200 Nope no backlash if you don't sign who they recommend. Just a bonus if you do. As to the rotation I have had no issues so far and I rotate a lot. It's mainly important to have the expected playing time correct in my experience. Plus good level of discipline on yourself and the AM.

I was very close to submitting a save, second season in the Germany 2nd tier. First season we got promoted from tier 3, and we where predicted to have a regulation battle. no rep, so very little loan deals could happen, our star player taking up a bunch of the wage budget. board upset we're losing every game and coming last place. THEN, I got offered a job in the prem and just left the team that I created to die. lol

That league one save is so super important. Trust the process, don't panic, and always watch HOW YOUR TEAM PLAYS in the tactic, not necessarily how results fall. You can be supremely unlucky all the time, but if you're firing off 30 chances a game then you WILL find a point where that equals results.

I’m currently doing a journeyman save and am looking to change jobs. Does anyone know how you figure out what level of clubs will accept you or do I just have to apply for loads of different ones see how responds?
I need help in how to develop a player. I am managing bologna now and wisdom amey along with urbaniksi are great talents but not good as of now, should I loan them or leave them in the primervera (the u18s, u20s) until they are are about 20 year olds ?

@zealand I am in a save where my FC Honka has too many extra teams(Reserves, u20, Honka/3). I'll kill off my Honka/3 squad by releasing the staff and players as they're useless, but my reserves do have a lot of players who have a potential for growth but the reserves don't play in any league unlike Ajax(jong ajax plays in second dutch league). Is it possible to enter them in any competition so I can redeem that potential atleast, or do I have to kill off the reserves too(heartbreaking cuz Honka has one of the best youth setups in the nation as of now).

The negative tactics produce negative results. Who would've thunk it? But yes, standard defensive line is the lowest I've seen be truly effective. I've played compact in a mid block with success. But Atleti style defend your box? I've never made that work in FM.
Yeah especially this FM. I have seen Simeone sacked multiple times for Atleti and then them resurging after they get a more attacking coach.

Northampton is my team every fm that I do a rtg save with. I found over the last 3 fms a 4-2-3-1 pressing direct counter tactics takes me to the championship and just altering tactics to pressing possession based to go championship to prem

Best national save I did was with Albania fm20 lost in the 2024 euro finals and became 7th in the world. Could’ve kept going but it was good enough for me

Built a new stadium as I came up to the prem as I didn't know about the time restraints on stadium builds... fast forward 9 years and we're now a top side, having to pay top wages to everyone, with a 24k capacity stadium 😬
