What is the Chester Fire Treadmill Test?
The Chester Treadmill Test (CTT) is a progressive treadmill test of aerobic capacity, specifically designed for use by the UK Fire Service as an alternative to the 20m Shuttle Run and Chester Step Test.
The test is a 12-minute graded, treadmill walk test designed to assess whether or not a candidate can achieve the firefighter fitness standard of 42mls O2/kg/min. The test is conducted on a treadmill set at a speed of 6.2 km/hr (3.9 mph) for all of the test. The gradient of the treadmill is increased every 2 minutes by 3%, starting at 0% and ending at 15%. The candidate must walk continuously for the full 12 minutes without stopping or holding onto the treadmill handrails.
