There were the OG games that started it all in uniform boxes that let you know what kind of game it is and what the graphics were bound to look like (never mind Mario's on his way to game over in the SMB box, Mario's suit is a different color in Mario Bros and the guy with the mask isn't in Pro Wrestling). I also think games like Tennis and Golf deserve a little credit for especially for their time. A lot of those super early Famicom titles have tiny ROM sizes and were made to compete with the cruder second generation consoles of the time. Their graphics and gameplay blew those games out of the water and showed what a generational leap the Famicom was even back then before memory management chips turned what was supposed to be a Donkey Kong machine into a real force to be reckoned with. They're simple but they were fun and got the job done.
I love Wrecking Crew too. It's up there for me with the original Mario Bros. It's such a charming early puzzle game.
Super Mario Bros. was revolutionary and it (along with the NES) saved the video game industry. It fascinated me and millions of others when we were kids. It is above “S-Tier” from a historical and personal standpoint.
I also think it should have been S-Tier!!!!!!!!

Everybody says that but nobody really believes it because nobody knows off the top of their head what’s past level 2!
I kind of understand him. Of the classic four Mario games, it is the least good. Like great for its time no doubt, but rarely do I go back to it. Mario 2, 3 and World just pack so much more of a unique punch.

Nostalgia goggles. SMB has literally 8 times the amount of levels and has tons more complexity and replay value than Donkey Kong. It's one of the best black box games next to Duck Hunt, which is why they bundled it and made a huge success out of the NES in the US.
@@RobotacularRoBob It's not the amount of content that matters, but the quality of content. People from his (and my generation) get more enjoyment out of score chasing than simply 'getting the ending'. Sure, you can play smb in that way, but it's more enjoyable to do in games of the style like Donkey Kong. I can't say why HE likes it, but I'll say why I can understand DK ranked above SMB. Personally, I'd swap them. I didn't really like Donkey Kong compared to other games of it's type. Mario Bros. would've been S tier too.

I agreed with almost every ranking on this video, but ranking SMB anything other then a S pretty much invalidates the entire rankings in my mind.
Tennis is underrated. Challenging and crazy fun when you set it to the higher levels. Tennis, Excitebike and Pro Wrestling were the best black box sports games.

Tennis is decent. The level 5 player is like playing ping pong, the ball goes so fast!
Excite bike is in the programmable series.
I think Tennis is still a deep game and decent adaptation of the sport

Those Silver Konami boxes almost always held a quality game.

Konami was so bold. They were able to use art from D&D, Predator, Terminator, Norseman for their cover art and nobody cared. Different time I guess.
Ninja Master some one cared. They got sued for atleast one of them. Castlevania II for lifting Ravencroft, I think.

SMB is supposed to run at 60fps, hope you weren't revisiting it at 20fps haha. All that level design in 32KB gets SSS tier for me.

That's an awesome memory. i have a similar one of getting Donkey Kong Jr. Math. i believe I payed $5.99 for it?! Could you imagine! I also remember they had stacks and stacks and stacks of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt which cost a whopping NINE CENTS!!!
Golf a D?! You forget yourself sir! That game is the best. As an adult I think I hit like a -20. It’s insane what you can do when you master it.
Super Mario Bros. is the best black box game by a mile, it should have its own tier. It is the only black box game that holds up today. Excite Bike is a distant second.

Except it shows Mario about to die and a fireball passing through some bricks. Whoever made that cover was clearly not smart. At all.
Ok, I agree that Super Mario Bros belongs in its own tier but Kid Icarus and Metroid belong there with it. Both those games still hold up beautifully today as well.
Wrecking Crew is still incredibly fun.

My favorite cereal was the Legend of Zelda/Mario Cereal. Each side of the box had a different bag of cereal in it. So good!

Ice Climber used to hand me alot of beatings from my older brothers. I was so much better than they were, that it would start off with arm punches, then end up with full blown beat downs.

I rented “Baseball” when I was a kid and LOVED it for some reason. I got it at Goodwill recently and it’s still not bad but I get board with it pretty quickly. I’d rate it at a C as well.

As a young maybe 7 or 8 year old boy, I remember my Mom taking me to the game store to buy a game (one of the only times she ever went out of her way to do that) and I remember seeing Slalom and really really wanting it. She convinced me to buy Duck Tales instead, and I'm forever grateful that she did this lol. To this day, I have yet to try Slalom!
Of all the black box titles Wrecking crew is my favorite. It so blew me (and my roommate) away. Plus you can make your own levels. S tier.
Fantastic video. I love me some nes and I know your open cart surgery and your rom hack carts are your most popular videos but I enjoy seeing some rankings of games once and awhile so thank you for that. Also there have been Mach rider trophies in smash bros since melee.

I also have a great Donkey Kong arcade memory. My best friend when I was young had an original DK Cab and Asteroids Cab in his “play room”. They were his step-dad’s but he let us play them all we wanted. I didn’t realize at the time how good I had it. Some day I’ll have one. Some day. Thanks for the great list!

Great video! So much nostalgia. The only black box games I had back in the day were Mario/Duck Hunt, Kung Fu, and Metroid. The only other NES games I owned were Castlevania 1, Batman, and Atriskas Ring (maybe misspelled, sorry). My family didn't have much money and I was limited to only those games, but played them like crazy!
I love Balloon Fight, Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, Wrecking Crew... they are my favorite, but i love all of the black boxes games.

Yes there is a great disappoint over this. Donkey Kong has 4 one screen wide levels and the nes gives us 3 of them super Mario has 32 wider levels with tons more variety. Super mario > donkey Kong

Tennis and golf were some of the best tennis and golf games of all time. I don't even like those sports but must've spent hundreds of ours grinding those games with friends.
The Famicom was released in 1983, with Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Popeye as the launch titles. Super Mario Bros was released in 1985, right before the NES came out over here in the US of A. So the Black Box series are the Famicom's greatest hits from 1983-1985. All the tried and true, top sellers.
That's why they're so good. They are the cream of the crop of three years worth of Nintendo releases. Many of the top 3rd party releases from that time period eventually made their way over here as well, which is why games like Pac Man, Burger Time, Galaga, 1942, Millipede, etc were getting released in the late 80s.

I give Urban Champion a little better rank for being a primitive Fighting Game, I rank it D out of respect, but I can't rank it higher.
I like Urban Champ. It's got a bit of strategy in it. If you just mash buttons, you're gonna lose like any fighting game. It's obviously not the most in depth, but with 2 players, it's really a real time Rock Paper Scissors game which is at the core of every fighting game that's worth play.
My favorite "Black Box" games for the Nintendo NES are Super Mario Bros., Pinball, Hogan's Alley, Kung Fu, Excitebike, Golf, and Slalom, as well as the "Sliver box" games Metroid, Kid Icarus and Rad Racer.
It was iconic, much like the Konami sliver box games and the blue and later purple and red outline Capcom box games.
Ouch. Gyromite with D Tier. Its a game where you have to trust your sibling not to crush you with a giant metal pillars.
I have to say, the loudest we ever laughed playing an NES game was when playing gyromite. Super underrated.

Fun fact, at one point my grandpa had what he believed to be the world record for the lowest score in golf when i was like, 1 year old, he stood watch other the console while my mother and grandmother went to get a disposable camera to get a picture of it, don't think they ever confirmed if it was the record or not, but knowing how obsessed my family was with the nes back in the day I'd believe it
The TMNT cereal came into my mind while I was watching this vid and after searching for it I see you ate some from an old box. That's hilarious, I see we have like minds.
One of my favorite games that never gets proper love is Balloon Fight Mode C, Balloon Trip. A rare LEFT scroller. It's challenging enough to avoid the sparks, but when you attempt to collect every balloon with zero misses, it can be incredibly exciting.
Kinnikuman (aka MUSCLE) and Tag Team were both out in Japan prior to Pro Wrestling.

I think we are in a same age. I want to thank you to bring back games from my childhood. Eventhough I’m not so much into ranking, you put a smile to a old school gamer.
My personal favorites are Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Ice Climber, Hogan's Alley, Kung Fu, Pinball, Pro Wrestling, Super Mario Bros. And Wild Gunman.
Love Wild Gunman and Pinball, always played both at a friend's that owned em.

Yeah it is basic, but pretty darn good...
My cousins and I played Golf a lot as kids but truthfully, it isn't all that great of a game. Now NES Open Tournament Golf...that game was amazing! It took the mechanics from the original Golf game and just enhanced everything considerably. I highly recommend that one if you haven't played it! :)

Duck Hunt is S tier. It is the classic quintessential light gun all on home consoles in the 80s.

Excitebike, Hogan's Alley, Duck Hunt, and Super Mario Bros. are my favorites out of the bunch. I'm especially find of Excitebike and Hogan's Alley because of the wild-colored environments that they have. I'm not a big pinball fan in general, but Pinball has a lot of neat secrets hidden in it, like that weird area with Mario and Pauline and what looks like a telephone keypad. I also like Urban Champion for just how absurd the concept is.
It would be nice to have the box art showing just before or during you talking about the game. What with the whole theme of the video and all. Just saying. :p

You are right to like Donkey Kong more than Super Mario Bros. Donkey Kong was and still is one of the best games ever created. And this from someone who is definitely NOT a Nintendo fan. I have to admit my favorite version is the Game & Watch version (which I own now). What a game! I wish I wasn't afraid to break it or I would play it every day.
