You're country and people are very clever and resourceful hear in the UK most would not have a clue how to restore most things especially wheels and to true them up is an art. down the recycling centre you would be absolutely amazed what people throw away nearly new bikes.TV washing machines lawn mowers vacuum cleaners. the list goes on and on they say we live in a throw away age the truth is the west has to much money and does not appreciate how other poorest country's have to improvise but i take my hat off to you all..... 👍👍👍
actually amount of labour put into that wheel, even at minimum wage, could get you a set of brand new wheels. that guy had to change all of the spokes, propably nipples, axle and ball bearings. And after all that time you end up with an old, rusty, weakened wheel. West is rich becouse we know how to calculate.
@@2dogslide What i'm saying is at a young age these people are taught to repair and basically make something from nothing that bike looked like it had been in a river for five years but to make money he made it rideable for someone. at the end of the day we would rather throw away good machinery than repair it more money then sense .....
@@stephenwright8103 Labour is a real cost. Restoration of that wheel cost about 50% of price of a new wheel (new spokes, nipples. axle, grease, bearing balls and bowls), about 4 to 6 hours of labour. For that time i could buy myself a new wheel. Thats why it's quite stupid to repair something that cheap. And well, this rim will most likely bend again - it's been seriously bent and it lost quite a lot of material with all that grinding. Its normal wheel, not some kind of worthy antic

There's a lesson here for the rest of the world, when a guy can restore what we all call scrap and turn it into something that looks like it just came out of the shop.It looks like he even made his own trueing stand. well done Sir. If everyone took a leaf out of your book the world would be a better place.
In other parts of world the cost of this job would be more expensive than a new wheel or bicycle. A wheel like this costs less than 50 dollars. This is the reason
You forgot to put the dust washers back on the rim. It goes after you put the grease on the bearings to keep the dirt out of there so the bearings last longer. You should put them washers back to cover the bearings.
Total respect! Your new spokes look great. I read somewhere that you don't call yourself bike mechanic until you learn build wheel. Perhaps Sheldon Brown?? These days you can find brand new wheels at relatively low price. But to me quality wheel is most important factor that gives you right feeling during ride. They are not cheap! Good wheel is not cheap and it cannot be cheap! You can have cheap frame, cheap brake, cheap chain etc etc. But never cheap wheel if you really want to enjoy your ride! Guys like him will build his own HQ wheels provided there are good parts.

Here in America this would be nonsensical because we purchase a complete new wheel for a few bucks on Amazon, or a complete bike for little more than 100 bucks in a store, vs $20 an work hour. But I come from a country where new wheels (IF you can get any!!) can cost an arm and a leg; a new bike up to a year's+ salary; but (work) time is not an issue. So I understand "Golden Hands" perfectly, and he has my due respect for this job, done with only a few tools and (for us) basic resources plus some ingenuity simply because he can't get specialized equipment like we have... Now, just let us think for a moment we got an extremely rare vintage bike to restore that has out-standard wheels, or that has to be kept in original 'substance' in order to preserve its collector's value... that changes the perspective, huh? Food for thought! I just spent my last days of COVID19 lockdown replacing the front end on one of my bikes that got damaged in a crash. Because I didn't get why I should trash a bike that, outside a bent fork and damaged headset, still is in perfect running condition! :-)
