Behind the scenes at Big Finish's recording of the reimagined Space: 1999, based on the original Gerry Anderson TV series.
After the Apollo missions of the 1960s and early 1970s, space exploration was very nearly abandoned as public pressure mounted for money to be concentrated on problems down here on Earth.
But, by a whisker, funding was granted for a base on the Moon. Greatly expanded, it became the international Moonbase Alpha we know today. 311 personnel serve in a perfect, self-sustaining, artificial environment - their mission statement: ‘to forward the frontiers of human knowledge and science’.
Dateline: 13th September 1999. The interplanetary Meta Probe is due to be launched from a platform orbiting the Moon. What could possibly go wrong?

Space: 1999, Gerry Anderson’s epic outer space TV series, returns after 42 years in an exciting audio drama series from Big Finish Productions.
Space: 1999 was originally launched in September 1975. It was lavish, it was expensive, it was thrilling, and it was packed with stunning effects and exotic alien worlds. It told the story of the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha, forced to journey into the unknown when a freak nuclear accident blasts the Moon out of Earth’s orbit and into deep space. Martin Landau played Alpha’s leader Commander John Koenig, Barbara Bain was Dr Helena Russell and Barry Morse portrayed scientist Professor Victor Bergman.
These much-loved characters - and many others - are back in a brand-new series of audio dramas which combine re-imagined versions of classic episodes together with all-new scripts.

Love the show and love anyone who loves the show, too. That said, there are two main possible approaches to revitalizing the interest on it:
One is the retro-homage where people try to copy and respect the original look and (sort
of) feel of the old show.
The other is respecting the original intent and soul (or psyche) of the old show but
modernizing it; that is, translating the original concept into new scenarios
even if respecting the old feel and ideas (a sense of profound mystery about the
space and the universe, sometimes in a metaphysical-philosophical way, its
challenges, a hopeful vision about humanity’s ability to improve technology
(even with failures and limitations), a sturdy sense or strength, resilience
and endurance to all kinds of challenges, a high Humanistic moral compass,
tolerance and willingness to engage with other beings/cultures/entities but
also determination to defend its own Human people and values, etc.). It would
be awkward to have primitive computers to match the old show (and that goes in
line with so many adaptations); likewise it wouldn’t be unwise to “update” the
show with non humanistic values (introducing intersectionality instead of the
egalitarian humanism the old show proposed would betray the sense of accord and
unity needed to face the challenges).

I’ve never been thrilled about the idea of a reboot, but Mark Bonnar as Commander Koenig? That just might persuade me!😃💗

The first time I saw a 1999 laser pistol, (this was in the 1970s,) I thought it was a staple gun.

I hope at some point a new take on the shows scariest episode 'Dragon's Domain' might be undertaken-that i would love to hear...in the original, we had several good sci fi tales, then 'bang!-they hit us with ultra probes, a dragon and a man's name cleared-but at the cost of his life

I'm a bit of a Space:1999 virgin, would it be worth checking out if I like Doctor Who and Blake's 7?

If you do watch it keep an eye open for something the appears in both Doctor Who and Blake's 7, the Pileo lamp. They can be seen in the Fourth Doctor story The Invasion of Time, and also in the Eleventh Doctor's first TARDIS interior near where the stairs go up. Also they appear in the Blake's 7 episode Killer. I think Vila washes his hands in one at one point. In Space 1999 they pop up all over.

I've only got into Space 1999 recently and I say it depends on what type of Sci fi you are interested in the first series is very heavy on concept Sci Fi
The big finish version is great regardless of whether you know the original or not

I think so! Some people who are new to it have found it dated, but I never have.
      I love Doctor Who, andI’ve recently discovered Blake’s 7!
I love Space:1999, and I especially love that most of my friends I have met through fandom of the show!

I’m impressed with the exposure for one of the greatest shows of anything Anderson..... being there originally I think I’m going to give this one a pass, it’s a tough act to follow and as exciting a production this seems tp be to have experienced 2001 - Space 1999 then Star Wars you have an incredible act to follow..... good luck anyway.
