How to Create Self-Booting PS2 Game Backups with FreeDVDBoot ESR Patcher

- FreeDVDBoot is the latest breakthrough for the PlayStation 2 modding scene, allowing anyone with a compatible and unmodified PS2 to boot unsigned code with nothing but a blank DVD on hand. Although many people are using this as an entrypoint to install FreeMCBoot or Fortuna to a memory card, it was also demonstrated that you could patch full retail game backups to launch by combining the FreeDVDBoot payload with an ESR patched disc! In short, as of 2020, we can now easily create our own self-booting backup games to run on a completely unmodified PS2, just like we've seen on the Dreamcast.
This tutorial will go through the process of checking your PS2's DVD Player version to verify it's compatible with the FreeDVDBoot ESR Patcher GUI application. From there, you'll be able to backup your CD and DVD based PS2 games, patch them, and of course play them with ease.
Keep in mind that FreeDVDBoot is completely reliant on the specific DVD Player version your PlayStation 2 has. With time FreeDVDBoot will be ported to work on more consoles, but for the time being you need to make sure your console is on a specific version. At the moment, every Slim console works with this method, with more support expected for Phat consoles.

A quick tip for you guys: I burnt a patched game iso using this method and at first it didn't work (black screen). I assumed an error occurred during the burning process (wrong speed, bad DVD-R brand...) so I burnt the same iso on another blank DVD-R. Same result (black screen). Then I had an idea and changed the PS2 default language to English in the main configuration menu, restarted the console with the same burnt DVD-R (the second one) and it worked!
Yep, FDVDB needs English.
This worked for me
You have been doing a great service to everybody in the community. Somebody need to show some mass appreciation. So thorough for a tutorial . Concise. This is what a tutorial should be. Now I just need to get a PS2 and we are set
Thanks, appreciate it!
Absolutely amazing, and with an excellent tutorial video to boot. Thank you for the demonstration Mr. Mario.
You're welcome!
Been waiting for this man, I remember the good old days when I bought a Modbo and got too scared to do it so I just payed some random dude on local selling site to do it for me haha! Now I just need to buy a spindle of those weird shiny coasters
Your are DA bomb! You make the best tutorials and so easy to follow. Keep up the awesome work!
Glad this helps!
Finally i can play my ps2 games without a magicgate memory card. I love your videos they show exactly what to do. They are easy to understand. Thanks
amazing video man. clear concise. easy to follow.
Picking up a retrotink has renewed my interest in my PS2. So happy this is an option now for slim PS2s that can't load from HDD.
Seriously thank you for this video. I was having a hard time finding any documentation that made sense and this worked like a charm
omg this is exactly what I've been trying to find now. Thanks so much!
IT'S TIME I'VE BEEN WAITING SINCE THE EXPLOIT CAME OUT YESSSSSS
Haven't we all?
The Patcher is available since a month or so... ^^6
Ps2 modding is reaching sweet spot slowly. No longer need modchip or swap magic and take ps2 apart. To get started all need is any dvd burner and dvd-r disk which are dirt cheap nowadays compared 10-15 years ago. You can get decent multilayer dvd rw drive for under 10€ and dvd-R disks are under 1€ per disk. You can just pop patched game in and it boots with expection of few early ps2 models that will be supported on future hopefully. Opl and esr are improving compability over time and soon we are on sweet spot like on wii where very easy run backup or any game
Truly!
I got 50 discs for 25 $ Canadian that's 50 cents a disc!
@@TechProCZcams They can be cheaper on some places. I got mine from retail store
@@MrScienceman2000 0,50 EUR/disc for blank Verbatim DVD-R in 25 spindle ;)
Helpful and thorough guide. Thanks a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
You doing the lords work my brother'
Very clear and easy to follow video !
I appreciate that!
@@MrMario2011 Likewise, it is nice to see the import games are even compatible with this method.
I love me some Super Robot Wars (SRW)
I have FIVE PS2 Fat systems, all of them are 3.02 or earlier :-( Gonna have to do it the old school way and break out the soldering iron :-)
Aside from that, you have a great way of conveying the information. Keep up the good work.
Keep an eye out on the FreeDVDBoot repository!
@@bongoman9578 I do have a 2.10U ~ however it already has a MODBO 5.0 installed in it! DOH.
Used to rebuild CDs as DVDs using the PS2 DVD Generator, it was a PITA. This is much easier, thanks.
Glad it helped!
Finally! Thank you from Italy!
You're most welcome!
thank you for this tutorial it is 100% flawless
Glad it helped!
I feel like a kid again. I love the PS2. Simply the best console ever!!!
Woo!
Thanks for the very rewarding video, I love you so much
Mr Mario ,,, you are real professional,,, thank you always
Good Job! Thanks 4 the video 💪🏻
Exactly what I need, thanks.
I just tried this with an import game, and it works first off. no more swapmagic! i wonder if it would be possible to create a boot disc from this like a swapmagic, but that doesnt care if you open the drive so you don't have to block all the sensors and such. really liked the video, keep it up! :D
The only way to do that would be with a chipped console, but we can dream!
@@MrMario2011 maybe if Playstation comes out with a PS2 mini.
The only thing i don’t understand, do i still need freemcboot ?? I’ve saw a video saying all i need is dvds, i got dvds, i got no usb for ps2, so can i put the video_ts on any ps2 game and launch it ??
Omg that's awesome! I can finally play Wrestle Kingdom 2!!!
GREAT work. Confirmed working 3.11E MK armageddon
this is really neat, I have all my games running off an HDD since my drive has died
That's still my preferred way of doing it.
I heard performance during cutscenes is poor, is this true?
@@dapperfan44 Yep, thats because usb read speeds are way slower than dvd's
@moon boots on my boots well, its not the hdd problem, its the usb input problem, ps2 has usb 1.1 witch is slower than reading discs
@@WetterThanIce Internal HDD (Only Fat) its the fastest method to load games and External HDD (Usb) its the slowest.
I tried this on Battle Gear 3 which is an untested game an it freaking works, was a little jumpy in the opening cutscene but the game was perfectly playable
I hope one day PS1 games can be booted like this on PS2, would really be helpful to me. But thank you this is a great video.
I'm a long time sub and i think i can speak for everyone when i say...Great videos MrMario i appreciate them more than you'll ever know. I have a question regarding the full screen video option the games boot into... is there a way to change the settings for widescreen once the game is running OR change the settings for OPL that boots the game? Thanks for all your time and patience. I did try changing the settings on the PS2 boot menu but it doesn't seem to make a difference
Can't wait to test it myself. Imagine if this was present in the old days.
Right?!
It worked! thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Wish there was 100% compatibility, like an optical drive. That would be the ultimate. This is pretty amazing still.
That's the dream.
I would say that Open PS2 Loader gets pretty close, with PS2 games, at least... and there is of course POPStarter for PSone games, but the less said about that the better...
"like an optical drive"?
It IS started from an "optical drive"...
ESR just isn't 100% compatible yet, but ffgriever (the developer of ESR) returned and already published updates after 12 years.
The compatibility is VERY HIGH (above 95%) and will be increased even further!

krHACKen and hugopocket are working on a "TROJAN-File", which is dropped into the POPS-Folder and fixes many problems and games!
@@tnaplastic2182 I thought krHACKen abandoned the project, and Trojan patches have been around since the start of POPStarter?
Awesome vid, been waiting on a tutorial for this since the video of the guy played shadow of the colossus on a burned disc.
Any recomendation on which type of DVD should be used? DVD-/+/RW?
I've used DVD-R for these just fine, although I've used DVD+R in the past.
What a day!! To be alive the hacking community at it again!! Much love for the hacking community!!
Side note: A very good video by the way!!! Good stuff as usual mr-mario ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!
Great video, BTW. :)
Glad you liked it!
God you’re the best bro
thank you for easy way and eazy english :)
Glad it helped!
I saw this topic in july, and must to say that is amazing!!!
(but i feel weird not seeing the "playstation2" logo. lol)
i burned two of my games and work out great, Jak 3 and RE4, but with jak 3 i needed to change the ESR file. could be a solution for another game that not work out well, i guess.
i prefer this method than FMCB because i feel weird seeing the bootloader image.
Good video.
WORKS!!!!
BRO u are the best now i am going to play half-life
Man I wish we had this 10 years ago😂 but damn my drive is on 1. Something.
Buy a second hand ps2 slim before this hack becomes well known. Prices will go up insanely.
Watching on lunch break ayy

Rebuilding PS2 CD games to DVDs is a lot simpler than when I was trying to meticulously rebuild disc images manually and failing...
Thanks dad
Appreciate ya
Thanks. I really wanted to play the Japanese version of Gran Turismo 3 and didn't want to buy a another playstation 2 just for one game.
for some reason ive only gotten one game to work this way tried burning two other games that are on the list and i just get black screens when booting
I'm interested in how this project develops. We need a good way to boot discs of PS1 games. Popstarter just doesn't work well. I'm honestly hoping that we get an optical drive emulator like the PS1 and Dreamcast both have now, but booting PS1 backups will make me happy for now. haha
You might want to see my MechaPwn video.
good videoo brooo
I'm confused, does this mean you don't even need to install freemcboot to a memory card if you patch the backup with the ESR backup? Your PS2 UI was the standard one not the free mc boot one.
Also I'm getting a DVD player not ready error when I try to launch the game on my PS2 with my freemcboot memory card in.
Would it be possible to run PSX games this way by doing the same workaround for the CD based games?
Hey man, what do you use to capture your PS2 footage? It's so sharp! I have an Elgato HD60S (which is I assume what you use), but what do you use to output from your PS2?
I wouldn't recommend my setup, so I won't say what it is.
i only have a blackscreen after i try to start a game?
any ideas?
Is there a collection of pre-patched ISOs around, any hints? Great that there's a selfboot trick. Personally i actually believe PS4 could be self-booted as well, but conflicting interests mean no one would ever release the full collection of exploits required (especially now there's a PS4 emulator to help creation of exploits)
hello! i love your tutorials!! just with this one, ive been having problems. the disc is recognized by the ps2 as a "DVD Video", but it always writes "Unable to read disc" when i try to play the disc.
The only step i skip from your video is the UltraISO steps, as my game (Resident Evil 4) is a DVD-based game and already comes as an ISO file. All i do is use the ESR Patcher to patch my ISO. is this correct?
If you have a ps2 slim. Try pressing firmly on the disc top tray while the disc is being read by the console. I did this morning and now it's playing just fine.
I wish someone would create an iso ready to go on all the currently cracked DVD drive firmware versions. I think it would be worth the time to have ready to burn images for utilities like the 240p test suite, and a FreeMcboot maker. I'm kind of confused how to do this for my 2.12U DVD firmware fat PS2.
Great video (as always). Do you know if this works for patched and games from other regions (e.g. if I wanted to play a patched 480p widescreen NTSC version of Gradius V on a PAL PS2)? Sorry for the edge case question 🙂
Yep!
G'day mate,
I'm a middle aged guy who has owned most systems over the years (and kept them all).
I do own a mod chipped PS1 and an original Xbox loaded with goodies. Both I paid to get modded years ago, never tried myself.
Recently I dusted off my old Fat PS2 and Slim PS2 and stumbled across your channel. Wow, great stuff 👍
Just ordered a pre loaded McBoot Memory Card, and am about to order the 3rd party Fat PS2 Network backing.
Your videos sparked something, and are easy enough to follow to give old blokes like me the confidence to have a go ✌️
I think if I manage this, I might start looking at my Xbox 360 and PS3.
Have fun!
I got so excited about this method when I found out about it, only to have my dreams crushed when I found out Parappa 2 (The ONE game I wanted to burn a disc of) isn't compatible with ESR.
I have a ps 2 slim.
SCPH-70004; DVD Player: 3.10E (so it should work)
I used an iso of nfs most wanted black edition and when i try to start the game my ps2 goes back into browser and displays the message: „DVD Player is not set up“
Will this work on a Launch model Japanese PS2? I am not sure if I remember, but I think it doesn’t have the DVD movie player already installed. I think you had to purchase a disc.
Plus it is NTSC-J. So, would the method shown in the video still work?
When using UltraISO, after I OK changing the properties to 4.37 DVD etc, the Image Box doesn't change and it still displays Mixed Mode CD, and then doesn't offer me ISO as Save As filetype. Have tried a few versions of UltraISO.
not sure if you still reply to comments on this but, I burned silent hill 2 to a DVD-R exactly as instructed in the video and ive gotten some weird graphical glitches and the binaural sounds are flipped incorrectly, these issues are not present on an emulator with the exact same ISO. any idea what the issue could be? thanks in advance and great video
I tried using the CD -> DVD conversion thing on Timesplitters but the disk does not boot on my PS2. Could I be missing some extra steps?
I am using component cables if that matters.
Do dvd9 games work? Like Gran turismo 4?
How do you put the other paylods? I can only find pre-built ISOs opf the 2.12 payload... I want to patch ISOs and not use some boot disc.
Boss how to delete any file from PS3 internal memory (inserted mistakly by Movian),, thank you ,, and by the way you are the only man who can do a real effective Jailbreak to PS3 ,, i learnet from you and it is still working
Nice tutorial, my dude! So the next time I were to make a backup, can I use a DVD+R, or is it limited to DVD-R only? Thanks! ;)
Should work fine!
@@MrMario2011 Sweet! Thx :)
Hey Mr Mario big fan... Need some help. Can you burn dual layer games on a dual layer disc and will they work on ps2?
Felt so unreal to see my backup game load without any swap trick/disc maybe now my bc PS3 can take a little break of playing my ps2 games and even lower the power bills lol
Good ole PS2, saving our power bills and hearing.
In case anybody is following this tutorial in 2022, DVD+RW discs also work for this (I tested with silver Verbatim DVD+RW media, I don’t have DVD-RW discs, but I assume those work too).
Thanks, that means I can reuse the same disc for different games right? 😌

Great video❤, I really wanted to try this but the link for the ESR patcher thing doesn't seem to work for me. Is there any alternative links to download it at ?
I've done everything exactly as in the video, reviewed it several times to ensure accuracy.
I do not get the green screen, but i get the dvd icon. i end up being black screened indefinitely. any ideas?
everything is compatible, 4x burn speed
what @allmight97 said. do put it in english, it should work fine then.
it worked buddy, i now have more reason not to leave the house :D
LOL
Hi! I don't get it why you have 3 similar videos - I'm confused how to softmod my ps2
* regular fmcb
* fortuna
* funtuna for fortuna ?
Please help! I have a slim ps2
If doesn't work try taking the memory card that was the one of my problem, if your game skips acts weird make sure your burning the disk on your specific drives lowest speed.
Hey Mr Mario! Very valuable information keep it up. Got a question, What to do when i want to burn a DVD with more that 4.7gb, like example God of War, Gran Turismo 4 etc...
buy multi layer dvd-r instead of basic dvd-r sir. hope this help 😁
Use Toxic DL Patcher then ESR and finally burn the disk. Otherwise you'll get a black screen.
Is there a region lock? Or can I play us/jp games on my europe ps2?
i get a dvd player is not set up error when trying to start the backup, fix pls?
Can I use the ESR Patcher GUI on 2.12U? This guide only includes the 3.10 and 3.11 firmware, but Cturt has since then added 2.12 but the FreeDVDBoot ESR GUI patcher hasn't been updated to include more firmwares..
im here for the same reason. I hope they update it in the future
I'm trying to run a PAL-CD (Heman), I did the Ultra ISO patch to turn it into a ISO DVD IMAGE as you had shown on the ESR video.
Then patched it, but it's not working.. all I get is a black screen.
Will this eventually be compatible with DVD 3.00?
I tried doing all this just now (game was Echo Night Beyond), but while the console recognizes it as a DVD video, attempting to run it results in "Playback halted due to malfunction".
Is it possible to use this process to make self booting PS1 games run on the PS2? With the UltraISO>Free2DVD conversion?
Questions: are you able to save your game from the dvd just like you would with a normal game? Will this damage your ps2 laser in any way (I read something about that)?
yes, you can save. no, you can not damage it.
Setting the read speed higher wears the laser faster
My PS2 slim tries to boot the disc but then some pixels come up for half a second and never boots up the game
soo what ive learned from this.
search dvd version number
download the patcher with the dvd drive version you have
patch the iso
and just burn it ?
i use esr patcher because i have fmcb installed but i dont really get it
Not sure what I'm doing wrong I followed this exactly and yet my ps2 slim is unable to read the dvd. Tried checking the game compatibility list and it should work.
"A CD cannot be a DVD" that sentence fired a question directly into my brain: can the PS2 play Video CDs? They're the direct predecessor to the DVD-Video format.
no.
This helped a lot, just got a PS2 Slim and God Damn I'm glad I bought the right one in a Pawn Shop XD.
This is a dumb question and I've been looking for this.
Can this method work on PS1 games?
or is there another way I can Play Burned PS1 games on my PS2 without the use of USB?
Its the same Model you got and just hoping there's an easy answer.
This won't work for PS1 discs or games.
@@MrMario2011 Alrighty thanks.
Just two questions:
1. In this tutorial, much of the work being done is FreeDVDBoot ESR patcher, right?
2. Once an image is patched, can it be played on a Playstation 2 with a mod chip? I'm sure I don't need one to run on chipped Playstation, but I'm just curious.
Thanks!
1. Yep
2. Depends on the chip
so im confused, you say i need to combine this patcher gui with freedvdboot, how do i do so? i have no memory card at the moment and i only got the freedvdboot disc to boot ONCE, it hasnt worked since then and everything i have is compatible
Since PS1 games can be played on PS2 can this method be used for PS1 iso files that have been converted to the larger size thus they self boot as a PS1 game?
I got one question because I test it already with One PS2 clock is working but I also check in with another PS2 with the clock is not working the battery clock is not working but the DVD boot iso games es note could that be a problemy the DVDboot game ISO is not working Mr Mario ????
Luckily i have three systems, a fat (2.11u), a slim (silver), and a super slim..
This works only with my super slim oddly enough. My fat is the one with my HD installed, hoping they make a 2.11 patch some day soon.
If I recall correctly, many CD games need to have their media check flags modified in the main executable to properly play on DVDs.
It's either that or I have it flipped in my head, where DVD media checks had to be patched for use in CD-based DVDRiPs.. (it's been a long time, haha!)
Both are correct, Crash Bandicot Wrath of Cortex is one of them, wasted a huge amount of DVD's before figuring that out
could you please explain whats involved in doing this?
i havent checked that list but from my experience it works with Monster hunter 1
so,i converted tekken like you did and it seems to work fine with openps2loader but other games like street fighter EX3 don't work,do you know why?
Great informative video here, thanks! Is this process possible using MacOS? The original ESR GUI software from years ago seems to no longer be compatible with newer versions of macOS, wondering if anyone has worked on a newer Mac solution since the discovery of FreeDVDBoot. Or maybe a browser-based patcher GUI? Real shame if not.
@@tylerdean980 Hmm that could be true. I only tried the GUI one, but Mac compatibility with anything a little old is always a gamble these days the way they've locked stuff down over the past few years.
Not sure where to find the qt4 version to try it out unfortunately. I did recently get an MC2SIO adapter for booting ISOs from the memory card slot though so this issue isn't as pressing anymore for me personally. Still could be people out there that may find that info useful though, thanks!
Does it work for bin/cue if only using Imgburn? It has an option to "Create image from file/folders"
I'm probably going to sound dumb by asking how do you install ESR utility on the FMCB menu? It is not showing in mine ... thank you.
