I never would have thought this recipe would showcase all of our farm ingredients! Eggs, milk, and maple syrup. I also added some vanilla that my friend gave me for Christmas!

Vanilla beans sliced down the length of them. Stick in a bottle of bourbon. (Or spiced rum or vodka)
Let sit in a dark place for 8weeks or longer.
You can leave the beans in and start using, or strain. I leave the beans in.

Jess, do you ever add fruit to the bottom of your Dutch Babies? That's our favorite way to make them. Apples are traditional, I think. But we love pears or peaches, too. And blueberries are fantastic! We've tried fresh, frozen, and even canned fruits, and they all turn out great. 🍎🍐🍑🫐

    • @jon.554

Our favorite is pears (raw), sliced thin, and layered over the top of the batter. They'll sink on their own. Sprinkle cinnamon on top, bake, drizzle a bit of lemon juice over the butter and powdered sugar when done.

    • @ourhomesteadclassroom

I make an "apple puffed pancake" which is the same thing except the batter is poured over apple slices sizzling in butter... and a half recipe works in a pie plate and it puffs up beautifully in a circle and the whole edge is yummy! (ETA it's like a magic trick because the apples end up on top!)

I sprinkle lemon juice over my Dutch baby after it is finished, then add fresh berries. My kids top it off with powdered sugar, but I top it with Greek yogurt, then the berries. Then top that with honey. I also substitute honey for sugar in the Dutch baby batter, using half the amount of honey than the sugar , since honey is sweeter than sugar in my opinion.

@@carolgladney9890 in a blender I mix 6 eggs/1.5 cups whole milk/1 cup flour/3 Tbs sugar and some cinnamon and vanilla... meanwhile in a 9X13 in the oven I melt a stick of butter and peel and slice thin 2 large apples... when the butter melts lay the apple slices in a layer and pop back in the oven (425) until sizzling - around 7 minutes ... then pour the batter gently over the apples, sprinkle brown sugar on top and bake about 20-25 minutes until puffed and cooked through...
it makes a lot so 1/2 the recipe in a pie plate is perfect! enjoy!

If you start with a cold oven, the Dutch baby pancake will have a thicker custard layer. Try it!! All you need to do is put some melted butter in the pan, ( or melt the butter on the stove on light heat. Then pour in the batter. Put in a cold oven and immediately set to 375, cook about 30 minutes! Thick custard and nice puffy sides! 😊

I love Dutch Babies. I've been making them for 50+ years. My recipe came from a 1970's Sunset Magazine. My e-z version is sprinkling of powdered sugar and a squirt of lemon juice, but my favorite way is topped with cottage cheese, fresh strawberries and garnished with a dusting of powdered sugar and a dash of cinnamon. To eliminate pockets of flour in the batter, start the blender with just eggs and milk then add flour through the top as you blend.

I was so sad when one time I went in and it wasn't on the menus anymore.😕 Lucky for me the manager knew how to make them and he did for me! From there I learned to make them myself! I think every European country has some similar version of this recipe. My husband's family make Swedish pancakes. Very similar ingredients but they are fried like a crepe served, in his family, with brown sugar and butter. My heritage covers both these countries! Merry Christmas! 💛🎄💚🎄💜🎄💙🎄🐸😎

She always made them in individual pie pans so each person got their own perfectly round and plate sized portion. I was blessed enough to get her recipe before it was too late to get anymore and im the only one who still makes them for everyone. I have always had six pie pans available for them since i had my own kitchen.
We like to make strawberry compote for the top but my favorite was grandmas favorite; just a squeeze of lemon and powdered sugar on top!
Thanks for these memories and my warm heart along with this smile!! Love you Jess!

Jess, I am gluten free and I added 2 tsp of baking soda to the batter. It rose nicely and has a great texture. I use the Pamala’s 1 to 1 gluten free flour.

When my boys were growing up and had a friend spend the night, Dutch babies were always the request. I have never added any seasoning! What a great idea...might have to try it. We always use maple syrup

  • @ceecee-thetransplantedgardener

I've made Dutch baby's for years - but have never tried the GF variation but certainly will - as I have a daughter recently diagnosed with celiac. Thank you! I usually top with a little butter, lemon juice and then dust with powdered sugar! So scrumptious.

In my family we called them Umpalumpas. 1 C flour, 1 C milk, 4 eggs. I like to sprinkle raw or brown sugar on top that turns into a bit of a sweet crust as it sinks to the bottom❤❤❤

I love Dutch Babies and will do a 1/2 recipe for myself. I will put some brown sugar and sliced apples in the bottom while the oven is heating and then add the batter for apple Dutch Baby. Or brown sugar and pecans. Blueberries work really well too. I will throw a handful of frozen blueberries in the bottom of the pan while heating.

These are my new fav breakfast, but I substitute the milk for half-and-half or cream, and use almond flour to make these Keto friendly. I also had to adjust the baking time as I have a countertop convection oven/air fryer. I live alone so only cook for myself and I have not found stoneware to fit it, so I use regular and non stick pans. Today I tried these using muffin pans, and reduced the cooking time to 10 minutes. Perfect! The added benefit is serving size is set, so I don’t overeat.

Yay! I’m on my first rise with your bread recipe right now and all of the sudden you upload a new video?!?! I’m gonna watch while I wait.
Thank you for sharing the “waiting room classroom” outlook because I’ve been in my apartment for 4 years, ever since my pregnancy with my first baby, and only now in the last 6 months have been blessed to stay home and keep the house. I’ve learned so many skills in that short time that have already saved my kids from a lifetime of eating our old ways. I’m finally putting pen to paper to budget our first bulk buy ingredients and couldn’t be more excited to try all your recipes as this channel grows. again, Thank you thank you!

    Another great basic recipe!
Jess I noticed you are preheating the stoneware and putting cold ingredients into the hot pan. I love stoneware but I’m always scared to do that. You shared your egg nightmare story and here is mine. 😮
True story, when I was a young cook, I was following my mother in laws, recipe to make an oven omelet. I used the only pan I had in the size recommended and it was GLASS. The dish blew up when I poured the cold egg mixture into the preheated glass pan. (I know that’s basic science but I was just learning to cook) . Fortunately I never got hurt when the glass exploded but my oven and kitchen was covered in small shards of glass that took forever to clean up. Years later I would be spring clearing and still find shards of glass. 🤷🏼‍♀️
⚠️ I invite you to consider adding a caution to the recipe for novice cooks like I was.
This actually would be a great future topic. Baking in glass is different from cast iron or metal.

Yes, Dutch Babies are like popovers & souffle. Therefore to get better height, as with popovers, heat up the containers empty, then quickly remove the muffin tins (or pans) from oven, butter them liberally, then quickly return to oven empty to build up heat of container again before adding batter.
Add batter evenly up to a bit more than 1/2 way full & rush them back to the oven so they can rise higher. Opening the oven before they begin to brown will cause them to fall.
I use cast iron muffin tins for popovers & would use a cast iron pan to make Dutch Babies. They are thick so retain heat well & keep an even heat, which helps the batter to set so they're less likely to collapse.
I like mine with lots of melted butter, a drizzle of fresh lemon juice & a dusting of Confectioner's sugar or lots of butter with a good 100% pure Maple Syrup.

Late in life diagnosed with adhd, i feel like i coulda had a family if you were around when i needed to learn these things, buti was never brave enough to be a single, manic, working parent, and took the way of the childless artist. Whatever you want to teach, I’m here for, and i thank you deeply for your unending bravery.
