It's not just about how many he's taken while he lived but how many will continue to be lost after he died. Without a vaccine people will continue to be infected. There's a good chance that if there is no one else that could make a vaccine the human race will eventually go extinct. He saved the girl, but killed the world.

I think Ellie learned two things during that fight. Joel is dead, he's never coming back no matter what she does or how many people she kills.. and Lev needs Abby to get through this apocalypse. Just how Ellie needed Joel. This fight scene was the most dark and beautiful fight I've seen in a long time.

A lot of people say that Ellie forgave Abby at the end. But the way I see it, she was actually forgiving Joel.
Abby is the characterization of everything bad about Joel. And the parallels are drawn such as how Abby takes care of Lev like Joel took care of Ellie.
At the end, she sees only the worst parts of Joel in Abby. All of the unforgiveable acts she committed. But Ellie also saw the last conversation she had with Joel, where she said she would try to forgive him.
At that moment, she let Abby live not because of Abby. But because of Joel. She forgives him for what he did.
If you think about it, that was literally the entire point of the game. It wasn’t to avenge Joel, it was to forgive him.

2 years later, TLOU is not a fairytale, never was. I believe 1 small part of whats driving Ellie's vengeance was that Abby deprived Ellie of any chance of ever making up with Joel again. Even though, we all know that Joel would have wanted Ellie to not go after Abby, and knows that Abby's action was caused by his past sins.

  • @frankthemousepie
    @frankthemousepie Před rokem +29

Ellie wanted Joel back, she wanted to make things right with him and she misses him. That's not the same as wanting Abby dead. Her revenge was doomed to fail, regardless of if she killed Abby or not. She just didn't realize it until the very end. That's why most revenge is hollow, people want that person back, they don't actually wanna kill someone else. There's nothing they can do about someone who is dead so they use that energy and helplessness to chase revenge, but it just delays the inevitable pain of having to deal with their death. Sad ending but well done.

@@janky7429 Unlike TLOU2 that just puts a blanket "Revenge is Bad" over everything, RDR2 shows both sides of the argument.
Take for example the last conversation between John and his wife when he sets off to go after Micah. Abigal is in the 'against' revenge camp, while John is obviously for it.
John however states that this is something he needs to do. If he doesn't go after Micah then this life, this farm, it be as real as one of Jack's dragons.
Yes, revenge is a fool and an idiot's game, and John knows this. But there are worse things to be in this world then a fool. Some things you need to see through to the end, no matter the risk. Because if you don't, then you sell out your own soul.
Arthur knew it when he chose to stay at camp with Dutch to the end, knowing how far they fell. John knew it when he went after Micah for no gain other then to put old ghosts to rest. Jack knew it when he went after Ross despite it being against what both his parents would have wanted.

The more I see of this story, the more I understand it.
    Not like. Just understand.
Joel killed Abby's dad. Abby killed Joel. Ellie killed almost everyone Abby cared about.
I think our fault here - and I mean humanity's in general, not yours specifically, whoever you are - is that we always expect revenge to be neat. That it ends at the death of the person who wronged us. But no. Killing for hate is always going to be untidy, it's always going to leave a mess, and there are always, ALWAYS going to be consequences that you didn't plan for.
And the only way to prevent the endless stream of eyes for eyes is to end the cycle. Will it be satisfying? No, of course it fucking won't. Will you think it's the right thing to do, in the heat of the moment? Probably not. Will we magically make everything right by suddenly forgiving someone that we killed hundreds of people to get to?
Of course we fucking won't. All we'll get is remorse and a bitter taste in our mouths. We'll probably hate ourselves for letting that rat fuck go when we had 'em dead to rights.
A taste that might eventually evolve into a desire - and maybe, just maybe, a chance - to be better than the . . . thing . . . that vengeance turned us into. Or at least to be better than the cum stain of a human being that drove us into this downward spiral in the first place, if only to say that you're better than them.

I think that's cliched. Full respect to your opinion. I think this was a good way to go. What resonated with me during this fight was the emotional fatigue from all the killing. She realizes that it's kind of pointless. I think the lesson trying to be conveyed here is that revenge is a cycle of pointless and exhausting hatred that leaves you empty at the end. If she'd killed Abby then there would have been absolutely nothing for her, she would not have grown and been able to move on to find another purpose. When setting out for revenge, dig two graves. Know what I'm saying? If you fulfil your revenge then you cannot move past that emotion, rather you've given into it and now it's all you are and were.
I think this way is the healthier way to let go and grow. Ideally, ultimately we want this for the character that we love. We want what's best for her.

It's hard to say I 'enjoyed' TLOU2 because it was so grueling but I'm glad I played it and think it's an incredible game. I think I understand Ellie's motivation; not just to avenge Joel, but driven by a kind of fury based on her survivor guilt after her life was traded, effectively, for the lives of everyone else on the planet. But this doesn't quite get me to what Ellie does. It's not enough to explain Ellie's stamina and determination. Maybe it gets her to the first few kills, or even to her first encounter with Abby. But I don't get how she sustains her rage through all this - including seeing the torment that Abby clearly experienced herself...and then still wants to kill her.

  • @croc560
    @croc560 Před rokem +11

What makes this scene so amazing is you need to THINK why she couldn't kill Abby. The reason is cuz EVERYTHING went full circle. Remember the murder of Joel? Now Abby is in Joel's shoes. Lev is in Ellie's, and Ellie was in Abby's. If Ellie killed Abby, Lev would likely seek revenge. If she kills Lev, it would haunt her. Lev had NOTHING to do with Joel's death AND even talked Abby out of killing Dina and Ellie when she had the chance. So Lev saved her life and the life of her lover. She owes him.
So as much as she wanted Abby dead, she was about to do the same thing Abby did at the start of the game, thus continuing the cycle of revenge. So it wasn't a matter of her trying to be the better person. But more of it just HAD to end. She wants Abby dead, but there's no victory in killing her. So...let it go.

I must say there is a hypothesis in my mind.
If there is possibly a The Last of Us 3, the protagonist will not be Ellie or Abby, but a character long neglected in the second game of the saga.
JJ, Dina and Jesse's only child and Ellie's adopted son.
I believe that The Last of Us will have a big time jump of about eighteen years, where JJ will become a young adult, but who years before sought to know about the death of his father Jesse, of course Dina in an effort to protect him, the Forbidden to know the circumstances that led to his father's death, but of course as a teenager in a hostile world, JJ tries to discover the truth about his father at all costs.
Which led him to an elderly Tommy Miller.
Joel's younger brother had no qualms about telling the truth about Jesse's murder and the near-murder of Dina and Ellie, and thus, Tommy instilled and fed a sense of revenge in JJ against the murderer former Firefly and former WLF, Abby Anderson, who is in middle age suffering physical infectious sequelae from 2038 with the dehydration, starion and torture he suffered in captivity with the Rattlers, as well as his final fight with Ellie that caused four canonical blows with an infectious blade knife. These sequels in her face had made Abby's life difficult over the years towards her forty-odd years of life, but no corporeal pain is comparable to her chest of traumas ranging from her father's murder to her cruel captivity which she shared as Lev with your captors.
Tommy ends up training JJ to seek revenge against the seasoned Abby and her traumatized partner Lev, and like a bloodhound, the young Miller points in the direction of where Abby might be.
But Ellie somehow discovers that JJ seeks revenge for his father and sets out to stop his adopted son from descending into hell.
But I feel like JJ ended up ambushing Abby, who surprisingly does nothing, and who knew someone would hunt her down for revenge. Abby remains plagued by PTSD, the result of the deaths she caused, and the horrors she and Lev suffered with the Rattlers. She definitely wanted suicide for all her failures and mistakes she made in not protecting Lev and Yara, as well as her friends killed for her petty revenge against Joel Miller.
But in a macabre certainty, Abby knew that someone would get revenge on her and that they would hunt her down wherever she was, and patiently awaited the hour of her reckoning in the form of a young adult named JJ, who in a last act of defiance, did not would beg for his life, simply tell him to get it over with, just like Joel said.
And in a cruel way unknown, Abby Anderson would meet her end at JJ's hands. But as we all know, every action there is unequal and opposite reaction in the case of human cruelty.
No doubt many people hunted JJ for Abby's death, including a relentless and ferocious Lev, who witnessed his second mother die cruelly. And with that, JJ's paths will cross with those of his adoptive mother Ellie, who scolds him about seeking revenge and complains about leaving his mother for such a petty feeling.
And to put an end to everything, Ellie Williams confesses to everyone that she is immune to the Cordyceps and offers to surrender to the Fireflies if she allows JJ to live, so Ellie ends up as a prisoner for an eventual vaccine and JJ returns to Jackson to return. your mother.

From Ellie's standpoint, if she's not killing Abby, what about those 1000 or so people she DID kill to make it to here? Then again, the writers just openly admitted they were more interested in tricking straight people into watching gay programming than they were in making TLOU TV show good, or follow the games. I hope that 2 years later, people finally start to see what naughty dog was trying to do here. I've never seen a more realistic depiction of pure hatred in any media, it makes my blood boil seeing the horrible and tragic mistakes these characters are forced by their conditions to make, which is exactly why this is among the highest forms of art.
Joel saved Ellie because he couldn't cope with losing another daughter and let fear win, Ellie went after abby because she couldn't cope with Joel's inevitable death as a result of his own human mistakes. Its a horrible cycle that nobody saw coming and is the perfect story to tell in these circumstances. According to this logic, abby would die next because of her mistakes, but through the innocence of childhood and a faint glimmer of hope, they both regained their senses.
Every character in this game is deeply flawed in an extremely human way, and I hope that people at least come to their own conclusions about these extremely human characters instead of letting hatred win.
