    My brother's headcanon is that Bond and Q have kind of a symbiotic thing going: Q mentions to Bond that some gadget "hasn't been field tested", and Bond tries to use it to advance his mission, thus making it "field tested". Even if it is as ridiculous as using a jetpack to get over a wall he could probably have climbed over faster.
    This ties into the larger theme of Bond doing things that make his job harder, like stopping to drop flowers on the dead guy. Our belief is that these are all explained by two points:
    1) Bond doesn't do what he does for England or the Queen or even M, he does it because he finds it FUN.
    2) Bond is good enough at what he does that he seeks to raise the challenge a little bit. While most people are happy with "Can I prevent this guy from killing me", Bond has to add "without spilling my drink".

    The band they used for the funeral scene is a legit jazz and brass band called the Olympia Brass Band that has been around in some form since WWI, and does actual funerals like this. I always liked that they at least got the legit local folks who do this in the film.

      I recently saw Octopussy again and noticed that the last act is set in an area where I lived for a couple of years. The way the last chase plays out, I am pretty certain they set around an actual map of the roads and rail lines of the area when they wrote it, and even the license plates on the cars (which in Germany are assigned on county level, not state level) are exactly those you'd expect. Which makes me feel certain that it was all done on location with local cars.
      With James Bond, you get to see the real thing. Not some place halfway across the continent that looks very similar.

They agree on the Top 3 even if they rate them at different slots, and they agree on the couple lowest rungs, and the middle is a bit of a toss up. So far I've been mostly in agreement with them, too, only I have a real bone to pick with Moore's time as Bond, easily my least favorite era of the movies. I'm looking forward to hearing Graham's thoughts on this because he's the opposite from what I understand. Now that we are into the Rodger Moore era, I can bring to bear trivia from his autobiography which I own. It's interesting that you mention the fact that Sherrif J W Pepper racially profiles one of the henchmen because they had too nice a car, because that exact thing happened in New York where the stuntman driving the Silverado was arrested while filling up on gas because the cops noticed a black man was driving a very nice car, ran the plates, didn't get a result because they were prop plates and the driver was arrested and the car impounded. According to Moore the car wasn't returned and the driver only bailed out through the timely intervention of Cubby Broccoli who in terms of smoothing out local authorities will come up a lot

    I don't think you need to even go with the " not in this moment" thing as far as the cards predicting them having sex goes. There's no caveat from the cards that also said "and it will be a loving and mutual act with consent on both sides".
    If the cards are magic then they accurately predicted the future. It just so happens that the future the Lovers predicted was "James Bond is going to trick you into sleeping with him."
    Which is a funny example of predetermination really; the cards showing her a future that only comes to pass because of the cards showing it happen.
    Well, maybe not "funny haha" funny

    • @DanteTorn
      @DanteTorn Před 3 lety +1

      I'm glad I'm not the only person who had this thought. Like "just because the cards say you're gonna have sex doesn't mean you're gonna want it or even like it."
      There's way more problems with consent in this situation than Graham and Matt realize but it gets into deeper philosophy and ethics of consent which isn't really necessary to get into. The short of it is that yes consent does actually come into the picture despite her believing she doesn't have any agency in the situation because regardless of even her beliefs that it is inevitable, she still has a say in whether she /wants/ to go through with it or not. Bond and her attitude from the start of her picking up The Lovers card comes off as if he's decided he's going to have her and she doesn't think she has a say about it. She doesn't express any genuine desire to go through with it and honestly seems perturbed by it. That status set from that moment does not change. That is unarguably rape.
      I would hope that it's generally understood that her being "into it" doesn't make it not rape. Consent wasn't explicitly given, it is rape. There is no if or but to that.

    Really great episode, with a lot of depth and nauance. Thanks and kudos to everyone involved in producing it.
    When I was a youngster and saw the opening scene with the snake ritual and saw the incredibly unconvincing snoot booping, I had assumed they had given the agent a bunch of hallucinogens and he had some sort of overwhelming reaction to the theatrics. I was at the age where I had discovered the weird books in the non-fiction section of the library -- the ones that were inaccurate and fictional but purported to describe what zombies and voodoo were. You know, the same section of non-fiction that had books about ufos and bigfoot. So I was assuming they were going to make the spy think he had died and come back, to brainwash him into some sort of zombie cult-member or whatever. Slightly disappointed it didn't turn out that way. Brainwashed agents might have helped explain how Agent Rosie Carver was working for Kananga and why she was so affected by the "superstitious" stuff around them. Oh well.

It made me rethink whether I disliekd this movie as much as I thought I did. Then again, I am on the hate side of the J.W. Pepper division, so I think my tastes are just different here. That, and I don't think any other Bond movies make me cringe as much as this one does. Still a much better movie than Diamonds are Forever; so it has that going for it

      He changed his mind a lot. First he said Bond looked like Hoagy Carmichael. At first he wasn't sure about Connery but then cane to like him so much that he gave Bond a Scottish back story in the books. Basically Bond has to be menacing AND sophisticated, Moore was sophisticated but not menacing, Same with Brosnan. Dalton was too Thespian and Lazenby too wooden. Daniel Craig can be menacing but is a bit thuggis. Is he ever referred to as Commander James Bond an officer in the navy? He looks more like a non commissioned officer in the commandos or something. Only Connery nicely combined menace and sophistication.

      @@johnwallen438 Τhe actor who will play Bond, must be the right person for the role and the time. Moore, especially from ''The Spy Who Loved Me'', was the right man at the right time (except the last film). Although he is very good in his first two films, director Lewis Gilbert said that still had the way Connery plays (especially in second). Connery is Bond until the early 70s and I can imagine him in ''Live and Let Die'', if they made the film in 1972 to celebrate ten years of Bond films. Dalton (should had play in ''A View to a Kill''), Brosnan, Craig is the right actors for the role and the time. Love and respect is not enough for Lazenby. After Connery in this film, I believe to Stanley Baker.

    But just when this episode came to Bond and Rosie arriving at the harbor, I was thinking "This looks like a copy of a scene we just had a few movies ago."
    However, Rosie is holding a revolver. Revolvers don't have a safety to turn off.

    • @empath69
      @empath69 Před 5 měsíci

      Ehhhh; 'Never Say Never' - due to the difference in how they fundamentally work, revolvers cannot have the same sort of 'safety' mechanism that semi-automatics do, but a simple transfer bar can provide the same end result, and some revolvers have been made through the years with safety features that prevent even intentional discharge until they've been disengaged. They are rare, as the design of a revolver by its own 'action' (sry, not sry) makes an accidental discharge more difficult - though still NOT impossible; always be careful - and most revolvers are not made with such safety features, as they're seen as redundant and introduce more complexity on a design that is valued for its simplicity.
