Having lived offgrid for over 13 years now want to offer one slight disagreement as to sizing the panels to the batteries.
It never hurts to have extra production due to variables in seasons and weather. Though my climate may be somewhat different than yours, having the batteries full on average during the summer around eleven in the morning means that an AC can be run through the afternoon. Or run the electric chainsaw in the spring and fall when it isn't getting to hot.
If there is no use for the surplus electricity, such as washing machine, bread maker, crock pot, etc during different times of the year, a dump diverter on the charge controller sends the excess to preheat the water in the hot water storage tank, thus saving on propane.
To me one big thing that people living offgrid need to learn is that adjusting your usage to seasonal/daily production times allows you to have a lifestyle that is basically the same as being on grid. You just can't expect to do things at night the way that you are used to now.
agreed, and if your parked on other people's land as most the houses on this channel seems to be if you add on a grid feed back "grid tie in" (i can't remember exactly what it is called at this moment) and meter your panels can help if not fully pay your rent.
I had Roy do my house too, with 20KW of LiFePo4 batteries and a 5kw PSW inverter, now I have 7.8kw of solar and 2X 5kw inverters , no power bill for 8 months of the year and a very small power bill in the winter time. Roy is a nice guy, well done on your little house.
As we get closer to finishing our design and getting ready to build, this spring, the more I appreciate these technical videos and how they relate to tiny house builds. Thanks for all you do. I love your work! Cheers!

I sure will. Gutters are installed on the rest of the home already, just not the side where the solar install is. That gutter will be added soon. All my water will be running into a 220 litre tank which will sit at the hitch end of the trailer. That system is designed to be hooked into extra tanks for additional water storage when the house is in a more permanent location. :)

Looks like my house is going to be permanent instead of mobile. I got a contract to sell my current house just two weeks after putting it on the market! So once that closes this next month I'll get on with the next adventure in life. I can't wait!
+Living Big In A Tiny House - just curious as to why you won't have AC in your house. Doesn't it ever get hot there? I'm in Texas so AC is critically necessary here.

Should be interesting to see how well it does year round. I make 50kWh in December(if there's no snow on them) and around 800kWh in May with my 23*220W(iirc) panels.

The problem with the solar design being developed with the wind speed example he uses (90 km) is that it doesn't take into acct atmospheric wind speeds. He needs t9 design with the speed generated from th3 traveling aspect & upward natural wind speeds headed into the face or front of the home.

Would of been nice to see the batteries setup too. Well I would like to recommend Lithium (LiFePO4). Compact, energy dense, super long life, super fast charging, handle huge electrical loads, super safe! - not the dangerous type of Lithium. Heaps of other benefits, a little more expensive, but cheaper in the long run.

If you're driving 90 kmh it may be equivalent to even lot more than that, if you are driving with the wind against your driving direction. And while it may seem to be not relevant, it is when you're calculating it

Wow, four panels generating 280+ watts at peak. That's over 1kw. That's a lot of juice.

An airdam on the leading edge would prevent any panels lifting off.
So what model of panels did you get and what is their efficiency?
Ive heard that 20% + efficiency panels are becoming affordable now.

What are you using for your house insulation? I would love to know your solution! I've considered spray foam to be a good choice because it adds structural stability and seals the house well, and other options (like wool that can settle) seem to fall short in comparison. Can spray foam be used on your steel frames? I would really love to know, thanks for sharing! I want to build a steel frame just like yours :)

Nice Video, can you already say something about the weight of the whole solar setup? I am planing a similar sized solar system to my tiny house at the moment but i am not sure if my moving roof can take the weight...
Yeah, there is certainly a bit of weight involved. Each panel weighs around 20kgs, and so all up with the 4 panels and the rail system I estimate there is around 100kg's of weight added to the house with this set-up. I feel it's worth it to get such a good supply of power to the house though.

When installing the panels they obviously drilled into your roof. How did they make sure your roof wouldn't leak?

Byrce why did you chose that trailer i want to build Brett S's tiny House the loft is inportent that the loft is tall enough I have very bad knees and its hard to Neal down so i need as much loft height as posible
why don't you consider a lifting bed? there are two online designs I've seen where it can be lowered down, one by Anna White as an open concept modern tiny house, and the other I'm sure you can find with a quick search as well.
By the looks of it I think you could have squeezed another solar panel on your roof.

Look it up online. You need energy output for the energy you use. Which depends on loads of factors.
Mine is around 161 square feet. The amount of power you need is more to do with what you need to power than the size of your home. The first thing you do when working out the size of your solar system is to calculate your energy requirements and work from there.

Is that ~ 1kw of solar panels? May I ask how many ah of batteries you have and what type they are?
All up it's 1.14kw, so it should be more than enough power to meet all my homes requirements, especially as all my devices are very energy efficient and are all designed to run on a 12v system (there will be no AC power in the house). Most likely, I'll be running a system with about 500ah of batteries. I'll actually do another video on the solar controller and battery system to go into full detail about all that. :)

I also suspect that would be enough for me, but wonder about the batteries carrying me through periods of poor weather (living in Ireland it can rain for weeks at a time). I have been reading about iron core batteries. They cost triple the amount of lead acid but have an expected lifespan measured in decades and believe a company makes them in Australia. I will, as always, look forward to watching that video :)

Your use of solar mounting hardware was very excessive. I have 3 100 watt panels and each is attached with the immediate bracket, no need to rails, in fact each is using 4 1/4 inch diameter aluminum rivets and I drive the vehicle every day, no issues at all. but I understand the concerns and fears which provoked the excessive mounting configuration.
