Thank you for making a clear no BS video! Very easy to understand and I also appreciate you pointing out the things not to do in the process!
The OLD MAN here, just wanted to say your using the right hammer. A lot of people think a regular hammer works but it has less weight and striking surface. Saw that cracked flywheel, over torquing the flywheel nut will also split an aluminium flywheel always check the torque specifications. No need to use nickel anti seize on the crankshaft taper since it affects torque specifications given and even though you think it will allow easier removal it will also create over torquing and split the flywheel.
Thanks for the tips, and thanks for watching!
Interesting. Am curious to apply Newton's laws of motion with a sledge hammer to see how connecting rod and casing are affected before cashing in at scrap yard.
Wow!
This is so easy!!
Today I have learned a new technique on how to remove very stubborn lawn mower flywheels!!!
Thanks.
Thanks followed this and it came off straight away🎉
I hope this is what my mower needs ... Excellent instructional video ... and the narration is the best I have seen on YT !!!
Glad it was helpful!
I came into this video like that dude on the TikTok... What?! No wayyy! I had the same thing happen. Hit a stump and sheared off the flywheel key. But, I am happy to say that it worked great. Thanks!
Best explanation I've seen so far.
Ur methods save me man I was at this flywheel for hours until I watch this video headed off in 5 minutes thanks man keep on making them
Excellent! It seemed hopeless, but your technique worked perfectly!
Thanks for showing me this neat trick, I enjoyed your video! Removing flywheels was challenging so I made makeshift pulling tools out of long screws, some bolts and bed rail parts (used some cutters and drilling in the process of making the “tool” but your method is much faster!) the big screw in the center is to be turned by a wrench to apply pulling effort while outer screws fit into surrounding holes of the flywheel (I’m bad at explaining things). I turn trash mowers into treasure mowers because half my equipment I got was free, fresh from the curb! Keep up the good work! I like doing repairs on small engine equipment and collecting parts for cannibalization into replacement machines (I consider safe operation so no corners are cut, safety 1st!). You, my friend are fast and efficient which is a really big help, thank you!
Worked like a charm!! I ordered the wrong sized puller and was at a lose as to how to proceed. Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching!
Terrific, ,,...mallet and pry bar leverage, did the trick! Thx for putting-up your vid!
As always very good explanation and totorial my friend. I've got some popping going on on old shakey when I start her up. Believe I'll replace the plug first before I get to worked up to see if that eliminates my popping but if not I'll be using your demo & info to replace the flywheel key. Thanks again for always sharing with us.
Great info it saved me from buying a puller I would not use for more than one repair.
Brilliant! You just saved me $120 (!) on a briggs and stratton flywheel puller 🙂
Thank you for sharing your skill. Great instructions indeed!
You are very good teacher!!! Thanks again!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇨🇦
Thanks for watching!
worked like a charm! Great video. Right to the point!
Thank you. It worked at the first try.
Putting the nut back on flush with the top of the shaft (to protect the threads)--awesome tip! As was the case with a couple other people in the comments, this video saved me from having to buy the flywheel puller, and I wasn't crazy about the idea of having to spend $12+ on what amounts to a bunch of nuts and bolts and a metal plate. Thank you!
They make threaded caps that allow a bigger vibration transfer which work pretty good.
I tried the hammer method on a stubborn tecumseh flywheel, never did it again. Almost ruined the threads on the crankshaft. I now have several different pullers, even some for pulley's and blade adapters. Best to have the right tool for the job.
Yes absolutely, as mentioned this is just one of the ways you can remove them and usually this is the quickest way for us when stripping down an engine.
Norge696 you must have had the nut slightly above the crankshaft to strip the threads. In this EP video they appear to hit it pretty hard a few times to remove it since the key was sheared and the shaft and nut appear to not have suffered any catastrophic destruction. The most critical thing about using the hammer method is to ensure the nut is level with the crankshaft and you strike flush not on an angle.
Techumseh Have a spesial flywheel knock of tool with LONG thread try that next time, and use common sense do not knock too hard
@@kjell-richardlvdal373 I hate tecumseh engines as it is. Don't plan on working on one anytime soon.
Agree, OHV engine is much bretter than flathead motors
Great vid, I’ve got a stubborn flywheel I’m trying to remove that the hammer and pry bar just isn’t enough. I’m heading to HF to get a cheap air hammer. Wish me luck. 🤞
Thankyou again another one of your videos helped me, very nicely explained
Brilliant- worked like a charm
Very good video. knowledgeable and informative.
Steering wheel puller is what I used. 😊
THANKS SOOOO MUCH. Option two worked great.
I also use some wd40 on crankshaft to help it loosen up. Often times that helps .
Thanks for watching!
I did that and it helped 👍
Very helpful, thank you!
Excellent video - very easy to follow and clear!!!
Good advice
I always used a block of bronze to hit with the hammer to protect the crankshaft
Very helpful as always thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks man. subbed and liked 👍
Thanks for watching!
Nice job, 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Awesome show😊😊
Do you have a video on how to open the engine on a craftsman lawnmower like this one? I was trying to take it apart but it only open half way and it won’t open using bar or hammer
I have a air hammer but sometimes a big hammer is needed
Yes sometimes a bigger hammer gets the job done!
Nice shades 👍 good explanation ⭐
super clear as what and why, thumbs up for you! Question, do you need to have some space bt the crankshaft and ground so that give shock? I have already removed the engine from the mower case, and can I do your way on the ground? thanks
Yes should be able to, just be careful where you're hitting. It's the shock that vibrates the flywheel loose.
Thanks so much! You’re a true lifesaver
Thank you.
Fantastic video
Does this hurt the thrust bearing?
50% acetone and 50% automatic transmission fluid mixed and squirted down the crankshaft also helps break the rust bond.
Would this work for a small go kart engine?
I only use the hammer if it gets me maddddd funny ha ha!!!!
It’s in the really old B/S manual
But they were cast iron blocks so I don’t use a hammer but a puller
Thank you 👌
I have an old 1960s David Bradley/Sears & Roebuck chainsaw that I’m trying to get the flywheel off of since the ignition coil and points are located underneath the flywheel. Unfortunately the body/shroud of the chainsaw is in the way of being able to pry up on the flywheel and I don’t see any way to remove the shroud. I have tried and tried to break this flywheel loose, but it is thoroughly stuck good!
thank you blessings ---great tutorial video
Hare Krishna
Thank you sir.
Thank you diagnosed and fixed
My auger control doesn't stay engaged when I engage my drive control, any videos or suggestions on how to fix it?
Tighten the cable adjustment, I'll do a video this week great idea!
@@EliminatorPerformance thank you so much!
The other thing is that the cooling fin,s on today's engine,s are made of plastic the key also keep,s the engine in perfect timing great job on the engine fly wheel removal
Thanks for watching!
@@EliminatorPerformance you are welcome young man
@@robertmailhos8159 do you mean the blades on the flywheel cause the fins on the engine are aluminum just like the block
@@conner5611 yes that is what I meant
@@robertmailhos8159 oh ok
What can you do if the flywheel is too deep and the starter pull can't grab the cub?
That’s a good bar and wide is better plus less chance of damage to engine
two different shops and each sold me a different flywheel key for my 6.5 HP Tecumseh lawnboy mower.
(LV195EA-362044D)
#611298 rectangle/no odd shapes. Solid steel. Listed as replacement part number per Tecumseh.
#611004
The other key appears to be aluminum. Slightly taller than the listed above and shaped like an “L” with one end being thicker and the other.
Should I go with the second one since it’s aluminum?
To remove a flywheel, do you recommend the use of a "knock-off hub"? This slender, metal plug is threaded from inside to follow upper crankshaft threads, above the flywheel. The procedure for flywheel removal (which I have seen) is to remove the cup nut and cup, then thread the hub all the way down the upper crankshaft to the upper crankshaft bearing housing, then back off the hub about one full revolution. At this point, the hub's top portion will protrude above the crankshaft. Now, by striking the hub with a mallet, the knock-off hub transfers force to the crankshaft, but more softly, as it rotates slightly with the hammer blow.
Your video is good content, and addresses a problem all of us eventually will meet with older mowers. We thumbed UP and subscribed.
No douibt, you have noticed many viewers agree-- your thumbs UP/DOWN ratio is 310/6.
The best way is to use pulley extractor. By using hammer, the engine can be damaged
@@olukayodeokunowo4631 Do you mean a "flywheel puller/extractor"? Those are impact-free, and unlikely to cause a problem. However, they have a variety of attachment mechanisms, and not all will fit the situation.
@@bobgreene2892 thank you for your prompt response God bless you. Your videos are always fantastic and highly educating.
what about the key way thats ground into cranck shaf does it need to be removed to if so how u didnt show us im talking about key at 7:02 the keyway ?
Hey Eliminator I have a ?? For u. I have a weed eater /trimmer or weed strimmer as Mick calls it that says it’s 4 stroke. How can that be. I thought weed trimmers were all 2 stroke. Can u explain???
It's possible. The Stihl FS 90 is a 4 stroke trimmer but takes a gas/oil mix, as there is no separate compartment for oil.
How do you get the nut off correctly without it just spinning around? Everything I tried to use to hold it still just slips out.
Hi! I have a problem with my ariens 522 snowblower, when i start it bacfires and it runs erratically . Any suggestions? Thanks
Carb needs cleaning!
@@EliminatorPerformance thanks bro!
Check the flywheel key, reset the air gap between flywheel and coil. While the flywheel is off, check the points and condenser. Check the pushrod between crankshaft and point set. Check the carb, check the fuel filter for water or contamination. As long as it has correct spark, correct air to fuel ratio, it should run correctly.
My crankshaft seal started leaking oil bad after I did this so be careful
So you can damage the crankshaft there is a tool for that. Very simple. Puller
I was try to remove the frywheel but it got stuck can't be remove and start to crack where said pull. I new this going to happen alway get stuck in top jobs.
What should I do if my crankshaft is cracked?
Scrap it
I saw someone mow over a
water main cover , ruined the
nice lawnmower ...
Unfortunately, this technique did not work for me.
Only works if ur lucky 😂woth nut still damages threads if it doesnt come in like 3 solid whacks
The Waffle House Has Found Its New Host (this worked perfectly btw thanks a lot 👍)
😊👍
Thanks for watching!
its funny how you show us how to do it the hard way first. an air chisel is the easiest way to get those to pop off without damaging anything and air chisels are so cheap. last one i bought was $15 brand new from princess auto. i would never use a hammer unless i had no other option. if you damage the crank it usually becomes cheaper to just replace the engine.
Many lawnmowers Have been thrown away because of shared Key
And many have been saved from the scrap yard by enterprising people.
Yes, it is only to replace that little Key cost only 4 dollar here in Norway, and the machine Have correct timing again and can be sold for300 dollar,
If you are making a living as a "PRO" why not get the proper tool that only costs $30-$40 which you will use over & over &over to do it right?
