The Melancholy Promise of Heidi, Girl of the Alps

  • Isao Takahata made a big name for himself with his adaptation of Johanna Spyri's Heidi, Girl of the Alps. In doing so he made Heidi the national treasure she is today, celebrated as much in Japan as she is in Switzerland, and she is as famous as the late, great director himself. But there's more to Heidi than meets the eye, and in this video I take a look at the glimpses we get into the man Takahata would become, just past the saccharin, cute tale of a small girl chasing goats across the Swiss Alps.
This video was originally produced as part of the Anituber Anthology 4, an homage to the works of Isao Takahata. You can find the full video here: • The Isao Takahata Trib...

My mom grew up watching Heidi on TV, and when I started getting into Ghibli films, she pointed out that those movies looked similar to the cartoons she used to watch in her childhood.
Now I know it wasn't a coincidence. Heidi is one of the things my mom remembers the most fondly from her childhood, in fact she used to sing the intro as a bed song for me and my brother when we were very young (we are mexican and Heidi's intro has different lyrics here, which are basically Heidi asking her grandfather why things are the way they are, like how in spring the flowers bloom and that sort of stuff, singing, of course, it's a very beautiful rendition of the song), and it's honestly kinda bizarre but sweet how something that she holds dear in her heart is actually made by the same people who went on to make some of the most fantastic works I have ever had the pleasure of watching, and that I have come to personally grow fond of as well. It's fascinating how Miyazaki and Takahata have had such a long and successful career that me and my mother, with completely different childhoods, experiences, and a large age gap like the works of those two men and their group of animators, writers, and all the musicians that have worked with them.

I want to say... That there was this one episode of Hetalia, where Japan met Switzerland.

    • @camilaGMW
      @camilaGMW Před 5 lety +33

@@naruto53353, there is this anime called Hetalia where countries are turned into human characters.
Each country has a personality that's based on the stereotypes that each of those countries are known for, example: Japan is a very quiet and reserved man, Italy is a lazy womanizer, France is flamboyant and hates England... etc etc.
The anime narrates the world history through the interaction of these characters, and being as such, we see how each country thinks and acts toward the other.
Switzerland is a very closed off and unfriendly man, in this anime, being kind only to Lichestein. And there is an episode where the character that represents Japan meets Switzerland, where the Japanese comments on how different of a person Switzerland was from what he had pictured, and that is because of the influence that Heidi had made on the country. So, when Japan sees the stoic, serious person that is Switz, he imagines him dancing in the Alps while singing, for THAT is how Japan thought he would be like.

Takeo Watanabe composed the music heard in Japan, Latin America and various other countries. In Europe the music was redone, but frankly, while good it does not come anywhere close in emotional energy as Watanabe's masterpiece. Takeo Watanabe also composed various other anime music, most notably the score for Candy Candy for Toei Animation.

It's kind of like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, it was not made by Studio Ghibli, but a anime company called Topcraft. Now everyone consider it is made by Ghibli because Hayao Miyazaki directed it. In other hand, many member of Topcraft join Ghibli after Topcraft closed down, and Ghibli acquired the copyright of the wind of the Valley, so it's fair to say it's a Ghibli animation...lol

I had been watching the whole series with my mom since six months ago. And tonight we watched the final episode.
    "Until we meet again"
What an emotional journey this anime was. The story of Heidi was full of joy and full of tears.
    Heartwarming and melancholic.
Heidi, Alm-uncle, Peter, Clara, Joseph and all the other characters will be remembered for a long long time.

    Thank you for covering this.
For some reason, we had a Heidi anime dub in Hindi for India in early 2000s. I think it's probably where my interests for anime and appreciation for Ghibli movies began.

A timeless classic here in France. I've just purchased the newly released Italian collector DVD box set, that features the original Japanese language.
The French dub is really good, but it was done in Quebec and they unfortunately changed some German names to make them sound more French (Peter > Pierre, Clara > Claire, Fräulein Rottenmeier > Melle Rougemont...)
I already have the complete series in German, to make it more "authentic", however they replaced the original score by Takeo Watanabe...

Now this is very bizarre, a couple of months ago I was in a group trip in Europe for Band Touring. One of the places we stopped at was Crans-Montana, Switzerland, and it was in a hauntingly beautiful spot in the mountain ridge. I would some tines merely look out my hotel window and just see the most beautiful view of snow peaks and clouds that were rolling over the mountain tops. It was amazing to be there.
Anyway, back to my point. A few days later on the mountain tops, the Band group goes over to a city near the Pennine Alps. And while we were there, I went in to a few gift shops. When I was looking about for Swiss Chocolates for my family, I found many book racks that contained Heidi books on every rack. And the surprising thing was that half the books were in traditional illustration of the realistic look of Heidi. While the other half had the same design from this anime series. I could tell it was from this show by how uncombed Heidi hair was. And also by fact the boy that was standing right next to her has the same design as Peter.
Edit: Also to say before I forget while typing this down. After leaving Switzerland, we had a brief stop in Luxembourg for breather from the road. In Luxembourg, I went in a few crowd gift shops and found more Heidi books that had the same design from the show. And also some weird looking knock off dolls or wooden figure in reveres color. It was pretty weird to see.

i say it how it is but The German Dubbed version is just so good, even better then the Japanice original! Not only was it extremely good, because not only is the settings right, but the way how emotions are carried in the languages are diffrent and just fits so much better to Heidi!

@Chase Zzz Heidi have a lot of movie adaptations, but most of them are in live-action. I think he was talking about the movie which have footages of some episodes of the series and was edited and made into a movie. Yes, the "movie" version might not be completed, but I don't think it sucks or you are talking about the movie that was released in 2005 by Nelvana? Overall, I do enjoyed this adaptation, but I do respect your opinion on it.
