I know we all have our favourite actress when it comes to playing Eponine, but at the end of the day you do not get cast in this amazing role unless you have talent, so long story short they are all amazing.

@@UNKNOWN-df3sy the problem with Lea is that she sounds too much like a Disney princess. Frances Ruffelle's nasal, piaf-esque voice is more like what i imagine for Éponine.

Amazing to hear this from when I covered Eponine, thankyou!..... I then took over the role for the first UK/Irish Tour in 1993/94 and played it again at The Palace Theatre, London in 1995/96!

Samantha is such a perfect Éponine to me. Her singing is gorgeous and full of power and emotion. I love Frances Ruffelle as well. I love Lea Salonga in Miss Saigon but sometimes she just sounds too perfect and flawless when she performs as Eponine
Allegra Fife she explained in an interview (or a concert) that before she was invited to play Eponine she had been refused to cast for My Fair Lady because she was Asian and they didn't want to see her. Then Cameron Mackintosh asked her to play Eponine without casting. She worked far harder than in Saigon just to prove that an Asian CAN play Eponine. That's why her performance was that 'too perfect' :3
I LOVE Lea's performance film actual productions, but I just don't lover her in the 10th Anniversary Concert, which is what everyone else hails as being the best.
Lea has a really good voice and she was great in Miss Saigon. She was good as Eponine, but, I’ve seen and heard way better ( Frances will always be #1) And I did NOT like her as Fantine, at all. I didn’t drink the Les Salonga juice, so my mind is still clear 😏

I also found it interesting that Brennyn Lark is a soprano, yet they decided to give her an alto role.....
Brooke S I heard that Nikki M James actually didn't want the role and was miserable playing it. I'm not sure if that's true but I've heard that from multiple sources.
Brooke S The role is more mezzo soprano than alto, so maybe it's slightly easier for a soprano.
Eponine is mezzo-soprano, but I agree it's unusual to cast a soprano (I'm a mezzo and I struggle sometimes with her lower notes).

My first Eponine:
Lea Salonga on the 10th Anniversary Concert. I like her, but I kinda wish I'd heard Frances Ruffelle first; if your first impression of Eponine is Lea Salonga, and THEN you hear a sound as radically different as Frances's, it can be a shock to the system, to say the least, even though I already knew and liked her on the Starlight Express cast album. She's grown on me since then.
The ones I saw live:
Dawn Younker (November 1996 in Louisville)
Sutton Foster (May 1999 in Cincinnati before she gave her breakout performance - my favorite)
the lovable Diana Kaarina twice (January 2001 in Louisville, February 2003 on Broadway)
possibly Melissa Lyons (May 2005 in Louisville)
Brennyn Lark (April 2015 in the second Broadway revival opposite Ramin Karimloo)
and I'm pretty sure Chasten Harmon on the "reimagined" national tour, March 2011 in Louisville. (I've forgotten most of that experience, but her name sounds familiar and the Enjolras that can be glimpsed very briefly after her solo LOOKS familiar)

I saw Natalie Toro as Evita in a 20th Anniversary U.S. Tour in 1998 opposite Raul Esparza as Che. It was supposed to go to Broadway but that plan fell through.
Sarah Uriarte Berry was in The Light in the Piazza and her performance is preserved on the Live from Lincoln Center broadcast.
Many of us have seen Eva Noblezada on the Tony Awards with the casts of Hadestown and the 2017 Miss Saigon revival, or Natalie Mendoza on the Macy's Parade with Moulin Rouge (she replaced Karen Olivo).
Frances Ruffelle appears briefly in the 2012 film of Les Miserables as one of the Lovely Ladies.
And of course, Meredith Braun was Belle in The Muppet Christmas Carol and can be heard as Betty Shafer on the London 1993 Sunset Boulevard recording (the one with Patti LuPone).
Among the ones I didn't know prior to this video, Laura Michelle Kelly, Sophia Regavelas, and the Israeli and Swedish Eponines caught my attention.

I saw Christina DeCicco at the Walnut Street Theatre. It was good production. And saw Alexiia Khadime but I was trying to see Hadley before he left but he was sick the night I went.
